Because of how much we owed, and I honestly don't know why. DH did them (forget the program he used) and I wanted to get a second opinion...but we didn't.

I urge you to use the free TurboTax online resource, to redo your taxes right now. If it shows that you owe a LOT and you had no reason to expect that,
then there probably is a transcription error. The most likely causes would include an error in copying a W-2 or a 1099,
showing income that's much higher than reality, or withholding much less than reality.
Possibly failing to deduct your real estate taxes or mortgage interest. Those are common too.
Did you itemize deductions, or take the standard deduction? Did the tax figure come from a table in the instructions? People sometimes put in a figure from the wrong line.
If you've already filed, do this anyway. You can easily file an amended return if you find a mistake.

What a coincidence - I am waiting at my accountant's now. Between rental property, alimony, moving expenses and all that, I am not going to attempt them. I've been with him 20+ years and he is magic with flying under the audit flag radar. For me, well worth the fee.
I mailed mine at the end of January. Received my Federal return in February and my State return earlier this week. Most of it was/will be spent on getting bills paid, above everything else. Everything else is secondary.
A flock of flirting flamingos is pure, passionate, pink pandemonium-a frenetic flamingle-mangle-a discordant discotheque of delirious dancing, flamboyant feathers, and flamingo lingo.
What the FLIP? I pay, pay , pay taxes out my arse. My son worked at Burger King and McDonalds. He earned about $8K last year. And, he is getting a Federal and State REFUND for exactly the amount he paid in. So, yeah, the "everyone pays taxes", total bullschit.
I did my prelim last month. Will file next w/e, I try not to owe anything while trying to not give the gov't a free loan of my money. I don't get big returns but I have that extra cash every month.

But that means if he is your dependent you paid his taxes, or you made a huge mistake claiming him as a dependent and he also claimed himself. You need to relook.

$8K is just not enough to owe taxes.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Just finished my taxes. I was putting them off, for no reason really. I'm getting a refund, but about half what I used to get - no house & mortgage & property taxes this year.
I'll probably put half in savings and use half to pay off July's vacation that's sitting on my credit card.
DH gets K-1's from multiple trusts, and we don't get those until after April 15th. So I file an extention and send a check for estimated taxes. I've got to get some funds shuttled into an IRA, we got a large and unexpected distribution very late in the year, threw a monkey wrench into my planning.
Also, we just formed an LLC, and we need to elect "S" corp pretty quickly!

Yeah, G gets a K-1, so we have to wait until we get that to file. But we drag it out as long as possible. We always owe a ton of money.
