I have been posting for 2 years about the contract I work under and how I am about to lose my job. Through that time, I have received raises and bonuses and so I am sure you all think I am just being paranoid. Well the contract change is happening. There are about 10 contracts that are being re competed. The first very large one was announced today. No good news. Many of my co workers are out of a job and/or will face not only a 30% pay cut but also benefits cut. Most will take unemployment and look for another job.
My contract award is expected during the summer. I have skills that are marketable, although stressful, I am pretty sure I will find job before my contract ends.
So as a taxpayer do you all want those that support the federal gov't to buy/design/ monitor contracts for weapons systems to be staffed by people with a GED? Because that is what you will be getting. The background is the DoD was told to cut their cost of personnel, What did they do? They decided to cut support contractors rather than dead weight in the Government, The support contractors do the actual "work" This will be a disaster to the taxpayer in that the system developers, such as Boeing, Raytheon, etc, will have carte blanche since the gov't support contractors who analyze cost and technical things will be gone and now staffed by GED peeps.
I know this is confusing to you and I am not giving details, because I can't legal wise. Just be prepared for a lot of cost overruns.
Many of my friends lost their jobs today. It is upsetting. In 3 years, it will all come back around with the Gov't realizing their mistake but it will be too late for those that can't pay their mortgage next month. This will create an economic downturn in the Boston area.

I've complained about this for years and have just been told to get my walk right with god. That if I believed in god more then I would see all this is just a blessing in disguise. I've been told being unemployed is a good thing.

I am sure you will find something soon. It wasn't a complete surprise so there is that.

Yep no surprise, but there are many people who don't have my education or experience in other industries. they will be hurting. I just need to vent. And you all don't get the impact this will have to your taxes. We need leadership.

I feel sorry for you and your co-workers. I wish you good luck on keeping your job, or in the hunt for a new one if you have to look.
Would it be bad of me to admit that I laughed when you suggested we be ready for cost overruns? They are not exactly a new thing in Government or Military spending.
I'd rather have qualified people doing the job is my answer to your "staffed by people with a GED?" question. Unfortunately I've known many college graduates that couldn't balance a checkbook, so I don't rate "has college degree" automatically as highly as some others might.

LOL, yes on the cost overruns, they seem to be the norm, although they have been reined in over the past years. This latest move on the Government's part is going to create a situation where the huge overruns of 15-20 years ago will return.

Well at least you didn't get the rug yanked out from under you like some did. You have some time to search and prepare. I hope you won't have too much of a gap between jobs.

Yes, and that is the bright side. I am excited to start a new career chapter, I should have left my current positions years ago but I liked my company too much. It's just stressful until I do have that next job. I stress over paying the mortgage, which is a bit silly since I do have savings.

Well, I was abruptly downsized in 2013. Didn't see it coming. Wham, I was out of a job and of course since I was self employed, not eligible for Unemployment, EVEN THOUGH I PAID INTO THE DAMN SYSTEM FOR 13 YEARS! That sucked. Just because I was co-owner in the my little company. So, I dusted off the resume, made calls, went on interviews and got work. Then, a year later, the place I had worked 13 yrs called me and asked me to please come back. So, I did.

Well another fact is, my company probably will be calling me back in another year or so, but I really do want a change. But it is good to know that there is a safety net down the road if I am really stuck. boy, talking about it is really helping me sort things out and feel more confident.
