Good news and bad news.

Most of you know that DH has been out of work for quite some time.  Since the beginning of November actually.  This has taken it's toll on us financially.  We have survived though.  For the last about three or four weeks DH has been in talks with another company.  He did a phone interview with them two weeks ago.  We've been waiting on a lot of paperwork to go through but at this point we're 99.9% sure he's got the job.  He will fly out on Monday to take a physical and if he passes that he'll be headed to a training class on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Providing he passes both those things, which neither of us see as an issue, he will start working on Thursday.  So that's very good news.  It's a 28 on and 28 off schedule like he had before.  The bad news is this job is only a one year contract so in a year, providing he hasn't found another job, we will be right back here again.  So that's the bad news.  More good news, it pays substantially more than his old job did.  Bad news, no health insurance.  So the raise will cover our COBRA insurance for the next year plus a tiny bit extra to put in savings to prepare for the possibility of him being out of work again.  In the end we will probably break even.

I will miss him a lot but I'm really glad he's going back to work.  Not for the money thing but because he actually likes working.  I know SS is going to miss him a lot too.  Anyway, I just thought I'd share this with everyone and thank everyone who pm'ed me with good thoughts and well wishes!  You know who you are and I appreciate it.  And a special shout out to NAOW who let me vent endlessly during the hardest part of it all and never once judged me.  You are truly a wonderful person!  It feels like there was something else to add but I've drawn a blank.  Maybe I'll remember later!

Sounds like good news overall. Is there any chance that the contract could be renewed at the end of the first year?

I'm really happy for you. Sending prayers that this works out for him!smile

My men do all my chopping. ALL of it. And they are hard on them. I need a stainless steel one! I bought two last time we went shopping and they have broken them both.

Congrats to NF, NJN.  Good luck at the training!

That is good news. And, just let things play out and develop. Don't worry about next year. Not even worth thinking about at this point. If he gets the job, then carry on. And, if he is that busy, then obviously the work isn't suddenly going to end in a year. But really, we all have to make adjustments now, the job market is far different than that of our parents who had the same job all of their lives. We boomers are not so fortunate in that regard. But, I would of course plan to put some savings aside as well for any situation of possible unemployment in the future.
But, I am happy for him. Most men actually like and want to work and use their skills.

That is good news. But remember, even if the contract ends, the work is still out there. It is stressful not knowing if you will have that paycheck a year from now but, unfortunately, I think this is the future of certain jobs in industries that rely on gov't contracts. Can you go back work? You could beef up your savings and perhaps carry the health insurance. The contract jobs can be lucrative if you are a couple and the other person has benefits.

Thanks all. I do appreciate the kind words. We're both ready for him to go back to work. I love him but I know he likes working.

As far as me going back to work, I'm not sure. We're trying to get my knee pain under control. We'll see how that goes.

Maybe an at home job? Phone sex operator?

I've had several people tell me I have a phone sex voice!

I don't really whine and cry and complain. At least not on here anyway. My knees have gotten really bad this past year. I'm honestly not sure how well I'd do working. If I could find a desk job it would be great. But yeah, nursing isn't a desk job.

Medical device companies and drug companies often prefer to hire experienced nurses for customer service and clinical tech support jobs, because nurses already understand the basics involved in using their products.

Also nurses tend to be smarter than average and more dedicated.

There are also jobs with insurance companies handling and managing medical claims, and case management. Those are all desk jobs.

You could also check out medical malpractice or personal injury law firms. They need people to review and analyze medical records.

This is funny because we talked about this last night.  The two 55 pound dogs sleep in our bed between us.  We're always out of covers because our dogs have bunched them up in the middle of the bed.  Last night we were laying in bed together and we were talking about how this was the first time since we got the dogs that we could actually touch and cuddle in bed.

Thanks! We spent last night in a hotel. It was nice for a change. We thought it would be horrible because our room was right between the fitness room and the ice room. But you couldn't hear a sound!
