Kids and apologies

So, when it comes to your kids and their friends, how involved do you get in their little drama spats?  There was an incident between girls (not mine, but mine witnessed it) where one told the other to please back up, her breath was bad.  The girl with bad breath told the other that she had an issue with her teeth and couldn't help it and that it really hurt her feelings, so the other one apologized to her - a couple of times.  To me, this should have been the end.  Feelings were hurt, apology was given, everyone moves on.  Wellllll, not so much.  Mom got involved with other mom, brothers told the offender they didn't like her anymore because she was mean to their sister, and now feelings are very hurt all around.  I'm only involved b/c my kid was asked what really happened since she was the only 3rd party around.

How much do you get involved in these issues? I mean, these girls are 11 going on 20 and I assume are going to have spats here and there.  And if the parents are friends, that makes it even trickier.  My first question would have been "did she apologize" and when the answer was yes, I would have told her that she needed to accept it - especially since the apology came with no parental intervention of any kind and was freely given.  And maybe go brush her teeth more - but I'm not a very tactful mother.  When my kid stinks, I make her take a shower.  When her breath stinks, I make her brush her teeth.

It sounds like the girls already handled the problem and mom should have stayed out of it.

Girl with bad breath went crying to mom even after it should have been over.

I think so, too.

I don't remember ever getting involved when my kids were that age.

They managed to solve any issues with their friends, without having me stick my nose in it.

Yea. I would have told the first girl to accept it and move on. If I was her mother I would have taken that as a sign that she needs help keeping her teeth cleaned.

Mother should have reminded her of dental hygiene and then dropped it.

Mom should be talking to a good dentist if her kid has teeth issues at such a young age. Bad teeth & gums can cause serious health issues.

At this age the moms should definitely let them be working it out themselves.

Kids need to figure out their own problems. That does not rise to the level of parental involvement.

Mom handled this poorly.

While I understand mom not wanting to see her daughter in tears with her feelings hurt, she should have used it as a teaching point.

And yeah, going to a dentist is a wonderful idea. But we don't know they are not doing that. The girl gave an exact reason so it seems to me, she has had some kind of dental care to know that.

I didn't get in my kids business that much. Unless there was blood involved. I did get involved at home though. I couldn't let moments like this go by without guidance.

The time to get involved is if there is recurring bullying or threats.

Well, if you had gotten it on film you could have posted it and made it go viral and gotten rich! What kind of Murican are you?
