A pregnant Popeyes employee in Texas says that she was fired from her job at the fast food chain after being robbed and refusing to personally pay back the money that was stolen.
Marissa Holcomb, who is five months pregnant with her fourth child, was held at up at the fried chicken chain store in Channelview on March 31.
A man armed with a handgun and his face concealed by a red beanie ran into the store and jumped the counter, forcing Holcomb to empty the registers before making off with $400.
However afterwards, Holcomb, shaken by the experience, was given an ultimatum by her managers - replace what was taken or lose her job.

Hold up: The robber managed to get $400 cash from the till, which Popeyes said is too much money to have kept in the register. They said it is not the first time Holcomb had got in trouble for not clearing the till
'I just had a gun to me. I'm not paying the money,' Holcomb told KHOU.
'I don't think it's right because now I'm struggling for my family because what I had to do to keep my life.
'I mean who's gonna call me? I'm five months pregnant.
'The fact that I got robbed at gunpoint and it's like nobody cares.'
Holcomb says she was fired less than two days after the incident.
A Popeyes spokesman told KHOU that Holcomb was fired for having too much money in the till.
They also said it wasn't the first time Holcomb hadn't cleared the till.

Marissa Holcomb, who is five months pregnant with her fourth child, was held at up at the fried chicken chain store in Channelview on March 31 and then fired because of it
The spokesman said that if Holcomb was given the opportunity to pay the money back they were not aware of such a situation.
She didn't clear her till and that is a big no,no.
But the manager should be held accountable as well. The manager is supposed to make sure it is done.

WOW! DH had been considering getting their spicy chicken - now we won't set foot in a Popeye's until this is settled in favor of the employee. Not her fault that the manager didn't empty her till - ESPECIALLY on a busy night. At least the store has a first-class security camera. Too bad they didn't train the manager as well.
it's illegal in most states to hold an employee responsible for robberies or items that get broken, etc. Why is this news? The employer (which I assume is a franchise) is breaking the labor laws.

They can't hold her responsible for the monetary loss. They can fire her for cause (especially if she'd been written up for not clearing her till per company policy).
But here's the rub...every retail/bank/gas station instructs their employees to cooperate during a strong arm robbery, hand over the cash...try to get a good look at the robber. With this kind of story making news, there will be some poor employee who, afraid of being held responsible, or of getting fired, will resist and get killed.
Yup. Somewhere, their social media person is trying to decide whether to try to fix this, or just go get drunk...
I vote on the drunk thing. This soon will pass. Another fast food company scandal and no one will remember. People have short term memory.

I read a different article that said SHE was the manager. It was her responsibility. Also, she was warned several times in the past about emptying the till. This wasn't her only warning. She didn't get fired for not paying the money back. She didn't get fired for being held up. She got fired for not clearing her till after having been warned serveral times before.

Yeah, we have some community facebook groups, and often people will say awful stuff about local businesses, and next thing you see, they are back patronizing that same business...

I can't tell you how many people would scream at me "I will never shop here again!" and I would see them the very next day. It was laughable.

Doesn't matter how busy you are. It takes less than a mi ute to run an audit and exchange a till.
That's why I said the manager is just as responsible.
I liked our safe at my last job. It was under the register on front line. It had a drop slot. It was very convenient.

The ultimatum was "replace what was taken or lose your job". So, no it wasn't, "oh you forgot to put money in the till". And, 2 days after the robbery she was fired. Pretty crappy. Which just goes to further prove that loyalty to your employer is idiotic. Take care of yourself FIRST. Don't take a bullet for them cuz they aren't going to thank you anyway. They will just thank you by firing you. And, firing you while you are pregnant. They probably saw an opportunity to get rid of a pregnant woman.
She was fired for repeatedly failing to follow procedure.
Of course that will not be the focus of any of this.
I want to see the manager fired as well.

On a side note, I'm not real impressed with Popeyes. It's OK. The chicken is good. But the sides are not. The biscuits are good.

We grabbed a family meal when the one here opened.
Got rice and slaw and something else. It wasn't good.
Rice was dry and flavorless, slaw was bland. Can't remember what the other was.
J got their catfish, said it tasted like grease. Nothing else.

I finally had Popeyes a few months ago. Chicken was good. The only side I had was coleslaw.

I love the gravy they have for the mashed potatoes. Their slaw used to be the only slaw I liked but they changed it & I don't like the new kind. It has been ages since I've had Popeyes. I used to love it so much that one year I chose it as my birthday dinner instead of going out to a nice dinner.

Most robberies like this do not even bother with a safe. They take the quickest lump sum and leave.
That's why you skim the till frequently.

Yeah. They are supposed to be any way JPT. But I can tell you I got in our safe several times in shift. In an hour at times.
And even if he wanted access to the safe, if she said I cant, he was obviously not aware that she could.
As someone with experience in this, time management is crucial. You don't waste time in getting out.

Now. What will be interesting is if it comes out that this woman knows the robber.
That would not surprise me.

Yeah. The more I think about, it actually makes sense.

If she goes back, she will probably quit or be fired in a few months.

This article makes a few different points, but doesn't include that update that she got the job back.
It says Popeye's gave Holcomb an ultimatum - either pay back the stolen funds or get fired. The only way that makes any sense is if Popeye's believes she actually stole the money. Why would any employee ever be liable to pay back money someone else stole in a robbery?
It also says that Holcomb claimed the gunman told her to open the safe, but she couldn't access the safe. So if that is true, how is she expected to empty the till if she can't get into the safe? Isn't that where she would put the money from the till? That doesn't add up. Unless she's lying. It also says she claimed to have emptied the till an hour before the robbery.
It is an interesting story. Perhaps more details will come out.

All of the places here have "drop boxes". The cashier has no way of opening the safe. More often than not at gas stations and fast food places, I see this sign:
