Birthday Cake Ideas

I need help from you creative geeks.  DS's birthday is next Saturday.  He is gluten intolerant.  He never gets to really have normal stuff.  His one wish for his birthday was to get a professional birthday cake.  I totally understand his feelings.  He even picked out a bakery that will do it.  I know she'll make him one.  The problem is that gluten free stuff is expensive.  I was wondering if I could do a maybe a small cake and some non gluten free cupcakes around it?  So any ideas on how to mix and match gluten free and gluten to make a cute birthday thing?  Feel free to post pictures.

I've seen where they do cupcakes and then put them in a design like a snake. Something like that but with a cake would be cute.

Gosh, I'm not much of a cake person.

I used to make some cute cupcakes in ice cream cones, when my kids were little.

They were a big hit!

But, I think your son is a little too old for that!wink

It's a once a year thing. I'd do the cake and not worry about it.

Well Lily, I don't think you really understand how much GF stuff costs. A loaf of bread is six dollars. Four cupcakes is five dollars. A bag of rice flour is anywhere from 15-20 dollars. GF is pricey.

I do.

And once a year for a birthday cake special made for my child wouldn't be a big deal.

That's just me. My opinion.

Well, we work hard for our money and live on a budget. Money is not an unending thing with us.

A small gf cake (like a six inch round) perched on top of your favorite 9x13.
That is what I used to do for my BIL.
Best part--you could make the bottom yourself. Just make sure it is a solid color that will compliment the decorations.

Also--look in your local natural food store. Mine sells a gf blend in the bulk section cheaper per pound than the pure boxed stuff you can get elsewhere, plus you only need to get the amount you want.

I have a very tight budget. I live on less than 500 a month.

I scrimp and save and pinch for the extra things.

A kids birthday cake is one of those things.

For the love if God Lily, if she doesn't feel she can afford a gf cake big enough to feed her family of growing teenage boys, she doesn't. It doesn't at all mean she doesn't want to make the day special, it means her priorities are not on the cake.
Drop it already, you are being super snarky.

THANK YOU Dona.  I don't WANT to spend $80 on a GF cake when we don't NEED that much GF cake.  My son is the only one who needs it.  I would rather spend the extra money on a gift for him.  And he wants a bakery cake.  Why?  Because he never gets to eat anything from the bakery.  It's like a kid who had to wear hand me downs all their life wanting a new dress.  I totally understand his feelings.  I could easily make a cake.  That is not the point.  I am sensitive of his feelings.  There's a store by us that sells really good carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese icing that are GF.  Whenever we have a bday, mothers day, or fathers day I buy him some cupcakes.  But it's not the same as having a slice of cake from the bakery.  I found a lady who will make him a cake.  She owns a small bakery.

Anyway, he loves fish and has six fish tanks.  Someone sent me these pictures.  I think I could pull this off pretty easily.  I could even go to the local grocery store bakery to get the cupcakes.

Thanks FWM. Someone sent those pics to me. I think we could unbabyish them. I'd do the little cake for him and then cupcakes for everyone else. I think you could probably use gummi fish too. He loves fish. He has some neat ones in his tanks.

I once made a gf cheesecake (SUPER EASY, I can pm you the recipe if you want!), so cute, a little tiny 4" one. It was lemon, with starfruit decorating the top, and perched it one top of my MASSIVE 11X15 pan.
THe cheesecake was pretty and yellow, and I put blackberry whipped cream on the cake, I was going for a night sky theme, it turned out pretty, but even with the starfruit I had to tell people it was the sky--the whipped cream was a sort of light purple, and nobody got the cheesecake was the moon.
It was sooo pretty though! I wish I had taken a picture.

Yes. PM me the recipe. I was thinking of maybe doing gummi fish on top of that cake and then just putting number candles for his age on top. Like I could have her put the fish all the way around the edge on the top. I think that would be a little less babyish. It would look like fish swimming on the blue icing. I like the cupcakes too.

You could do a tiered cake - with one of the tiers GF for your DS. Then you could really play around with decor!
