Hotel's 'Crying Rooms' Are Perfect for When You Need a Good Sob

A Japanese hotel is making headlines for offering "crying rooms" where women can "de-stress" by bawling their eyes out, a spokesperson tells TIME.

For 10,000 Japanese Yen (or about $85 U.S. dollars) per person, these special rooms at the Mitsui Garden Hotel Yotsuya in Tokyo are stocked with tissues, "warm eye masks" and about a dozen sentimental movies, six of which are available in English and include Forrest Gump, The Intouchables, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Notebook, One Day and What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

A spokesperson tells TIME that the hotel started the promotion "because Japanese ladies in their 20s-40s are often said to live a life of stress."

The whole experience—which is available until August 31—sounds like a classier version of that scene from Bridget Jones's Diary in which Renée Zellweger lip-syncs Céline Dion's "All by Myself" in her pajamas:

Isn't $85 US really, really cheap for a hotel room in Tokyo?

I stayed at their hotel in Osaka. It's a nice business hotel. And they had staff who spoke English which was a plus for me.

This is not for the night. Japanese hotels often rent by the hour. Here, they may be getting 2-3 hours.

Although, renting love hotel rooms for the night is pretty cheap.  They are most popular in the afternoon.  Most of them are vacant at night.

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure Garden Hotels do not rent by the hour. They are business hotels as opposed to love hotels.

I know. I always thought Crying Rooms was that special room in church where parents with babies sat.

I don't think people understand the pressures of Japanese culture on women. They are supposed to be happy and gay all the time, and a pleasure to be around.

Sundays are family days. Women walk around with their husbands and children at the parks and shrines. The women are wearing 4 inch stilettos and everyone is dressed up.

They are probably on a base. I hope they venture out and soak up the culture. It's quite different.

Oh yes, my niece is very adventurous. She lived in Belgium for awhile and Italy so she will have a wonderful time.
