Ohio students arrested in tire-deflating 'senior prank'

Published May 10, 2015

| FoxNews.com

Four Ohio teenagers arrested Friday were charged with felonies after damaging 24 school buses as part of a senior prank.

Clark County sheriff's officials say the teens removed valve stems from tires on buses used by Northwestern Local School District in Springfield. Authorities say the vandalism forced school officials to cancel all classes in the 2,000-student district on Friday. School officials estimate repairs will cost thousands of dollars.

According to WHIO, Taylor Monroe, 18, Stewart Parrott, 18, Anthony Esposito, 19, and Justin Weekly, 18, are charged with vandalism and disrupting public service.

The sheriff's office, in a statement, says the students also left behind a message written in chalk that read: "You have been pranked by seniors 2015" and "To have school or to not have school?"

“I’m disappointed in the students,” District Superintendent Tony Orr said, according to WHIO. “We expect our students to use better judgment. But in this case, they did not.”

Orr said the students caused "some real damage."

"They’re going to have to pay for it,” he told the station.

Orr said students might have to make up the canceled day, but graduation will not be affected.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pretty dumb. I get they probably thought that was funny. But, to ruin all those tires is expensive vandalism.

I have no experience with truck or bus tires.

Car tires are generally NOT damaged if the air is let out UNLESS THE VEHICLE IS THEN MOVED on the flat tire(s).

There would be a  nominal cost for valve stems, labor and use of the air pump, possibly a significant loss from the inability to USE the buses, but not for replacing the tires.

and, of course, loss of a school day when the faculty will have to be paid anyway, is expensive.

I don't get the whole canceling school thing. That wasn't necessary. Rather stupid of the school district.

I can see making the boys pay restitution. And some community srrvice.

But it was just a prank.

How are they going to have school if they can't bus the students? And, who is to know if that was part of a wider prank or not? Canceling school and looking into it makes the most sense. Let them pay for the damage.

I guess no one in the district has a car.

School didn't have to be out.

Actions have consequences.

The only prank I participated in (fraternity pledge prank) involved painting with water soluble paint.

Prank undone with a hose and a brush.

It's not that simple Lilly.  I think I would want the school to fully investigate what the situation was rather than just say "oh, la, la, just a prank".  Yeah, after the fact and you have looked into it, you see what it is.  But, you don't just ASSUME.

What else would it be?

Not all pranks involve damage. I have no problem with pranks.

I don't see over reacting to them.

This wasn't terrible. It was stupid and caused damage and they should pay restitution and have community service. But more than that is over kill.

The pranks I've been involved in would get me in serious trouble these days.

I don't think 24 buses damaged to be a "gross overreaction'.   And, no, people can't just always get their kids to school at a certain time.  A lot of people have jobs Lilly that don't coincide with school hours.

It says THOUSANDS of dollars in repair.  This wasn't simply soaping windows.  And, if they damaged 24 buses, why would you assume there wasn't some damage in the school or something else going on?

Yeah, which is easy to do when you don't have charge of a 1000 kids.  hmm

Well, obviously, 24 buses full of kids don't.  Sooo, yeah.  confuse

: "You have been pranked by seniors 2015" and "To have school or to not have school?"

I think to have that message would be a red flag to any reasonable administrator.

Kids use to call in bomb threats to get out of tests. The school was emptied and after walk through we went back to class and wondered who did it and took the test any way.

Heck, when the bathroom was actually set on fire we were all put in the gym for about an hour and went right back to class.

Now a note gets school canceled for the day. A FB post can bring the SWAT team in.

Yes it can.  Because it is a different world now.  But, so what?  They cancelled a day of school.  Big whoop.

That was probably about 500 or more kids without a ride. I doubt 500 parents could skip out of work to go pick up their kid to tote them to school.

You drop off you kid on the way to work?

Cause you know, never had to do that ever I'm guessing.

And why couldn't the other 2000+ students get there?

Um some of us have jobs where we have to be at work hours before school starts. Not all jobs

follow school hours.

I start work at 6:45 which means I leave the house at 6. I don't live with my family. I have no family here. Schools here don't allow the students to arrive before a certain time. My hospital would be in serious trouble if a few dozen employees had to walk away from their patients to go all the way home to get their kids to take them to school. Not everyone has the luxury of dropping their kid off every day.

Which is why they ride the bus in the first place. It's not like they had time to make alternate plans, this came out of the blue.

It is a big whoop if they have already had too many days off and will need to make it up.  And it will be expensive.  Each day of school around here costs about 1/2 million dollars - and that likely wasn't saved by this totally unexpected last minute cancellation.  Janitors showed up.  Cafeteria workers showed up.  Teachers probably showed up.  Buses are required for school to occur.  This was a big whoop.

That isn't what I meant.  She said it is a big overreaction to cancel school.  That it was "just a prank".  Read my previous posts.  I said it was a very expensive prank.  And, that with the cryptic "should you have school or not", that the Principal probably felt the best approach was to cancel school in order to further investigate, search the school grounds and so forth.  Yes, this was a very expensive prank.  But, Lilly seems focused on missing a day of school for the kids.  Which, that will be addressed as they will add another day at the end of the year, so the kids technically didn't miss anything.  Do you get what I mean?

Yes, I do - I responded and then went back and read.  It's a big deal to cancel school for no reason.  And for families who had plans, adding an extra day at the end of the school year could be very inconvenient.

I agree. But, that Admin had to do what they thought best in this instant. And, thousands of kids who ride buses just can't magically "get a ride from their parents" on the morning of school.

I know this might be shocking - but some parents might not have cars available. Some may not own cars, or some families might only have one car, which the working parent has already left with.

I have to leave a lot earlier than school hours. And, you aren't allowed to drop the kids off any earlier than a set time. They can't be dropped off to sit there hours before school starts.
