I was thinking about the things we are planning for vacation. One thing we always seem to do, if there is one, is visit a Ripley's museum.

What's something you always seem to do?

Well, we haven't been on vacation, with all of our children, for a while. (Old age, and all.wink)

But, a lot of our vacations, when our children were young,  were road trips.

And, when things got tense, do to a traffic jam, or whatever......

We would, MEOW! At the top of our lungs, for a few minutes!biggrin

It broke the tension.

It made the cars around us, really worry for our sanity!wink

But, our children, will never forget it!biggrin

MEOW! meow! MEEEEEOOOW! meow! For five minutes, or so!

You get the idea! LOL!wink

If I fly, I allow myself one small souvenir from every airport...and I buy a paperback book!

If we fly, I buy sticker books for the boys and surprise them on the plane. If we stay at the beach, it's miniature golf, and ice cream every afternoon. Road trips the boys try to see how many different license plates they see. They do that all the time, too.

We also go to zoos or aquariums. Or take factory tours. Last year we toured a potato chip factory and a gourmet chocolate shop. As a kid I remember touring a few breweries and/or distilleries. I know of a legal bootlegger in VA who is neighbors with an old family friend. My parents have received private tours a couple times. I should take the boys there one of these days. His stuff is really good and sold in the ABC stores around here.

I didn't know there were any LEGAL bootleggers. That's neat.

Whenever I travel to a different state, if that state, or any that I pass through while driving on my way, have a Lottery, I always buy a small denomination "scratch off" ticket. $1 to $5, depending on how many states I am planning on traveling through. I also buy a ticket per state on the return trip.

Yes, he is quite proud of his license.  He started out as a moonshiner and obtained a license to sell.  He sells his White Lightening as well as other whiskeys.  They're pretty good.

Another thing we do, find something historical.

It could be old forts, churches, parks. Something to do with the local history.

Like Myrtle Beach has a fairly rich pirate history. There is a local point on the coast that is said to have been Blackbeards hiding spot for a short time.

And if we have a rainy day, or need a break from being wet all the time, we drive around the back roads. Seeing the local side of things.

When my ex & I vacationed we always went to a small local museum if they had one.  Hopetown Bahamas also had a very rich pirate history & also it was a slave route.

Belmont Farm Distillery in Culpepper.  Check it out!

I remember visiting "Walton's Mountain" several years ago.  The tour guide in the museum there told me if I drove down this dirt road nearby, stopped, and honked twice, someone would come out and sell me moonshine (Papa's recipe).  Didn't try it, but I thought it was interesting.

I like talking to the locals and finding the best restaurants. The ones that only the locals know about.

We buy a magnet. Everywhere. Our refrigerator is covered in magnets. When one breaks, we keep it in the junk drawer to "fix later". Uh huh.

We used to do that, too.  We hang them on the tree in our bedroom.  It's fun to remember back.
