No matter your age, whether you're a boomer or a millennial, you might have noticed that people's manners just aren't what they used to be. As kids, we wouldn't have dared call someone older than us by their first name. It was always Mr. or Mrs. so-and-so. And our mothers drilled in us the habit of saying please and thank you. We asked our Facebook friends about the polite niceties we hardly ever see anymore and we got a massive response. Check out the list below.

1. Writing thank you notes.

Because we'd really appreciate knowing you got our gift.

2. Welcoming a new neighbor with a batch of cookies or even a friendly hello.
Love thy neighbor, people.

3. Giving your seat up on public transportation for the elderly, pregnant women and those with disabilities.
Do the right thing.

4. RSVPing to events.

Since when was "maybe" an appropriate response?

5. Taking off your hat indoors.
Show some respect.

6. Making polite small talk at the checkout.
This one goes both ways. Cashiers, say hello and stop talking to your coworkers in the other lane. Customers, put down the cell phone.

7. Saying "You're welcome."

"No problem" is not the appropriate response.

8. Giving your undivided attention to your company, rather than your phone.

Rude.

9. Holding the door open for the person behind you.
Etiquette 101.

10. Never interrupting people to take a phone call.

Yeah. I agree with the list.

I do 8 of the 10 on a regular basis.

I don't wear hats, so #5 doesn't apply.

Most of our neighbors are renters now...

6. Making polite small talk at the checkout

Um, no. Complete your purchase and get the heck out. Why hold me up for chitchat? They aren't there for conversation.

We were welcomed with loaves of bread by a few neighbors when we moved in. I made meals for those who just had a baby or were going through chemo. We also received bread when the storks were on our front yard announcing the twins' birth. What is it with bread? I appreciated it, but just wondered...it seemed to be the "thing" in our neighborhood.

I agree, those things on the list are becoming few and far between.

The cashiers at Trader Joe's make small talk.

I remember once in Las Vegas with my friend...we were at a store somewhere checking out.  The cashier looked like she was having a bad day.  My friend mouthed to me, "watch this"...and she said, "oh thank you so much" then she read her name on her name tag and addressed her by her name and the woman's face lit up and she smiled.

A little bit of personal attention goes a long way.

Do you really think those cashiers want to make small talk with hundreds of people?

Honestly, I scan the checkout lines. There are a couple of old lady cashiers who are PAINFULLY slow. So, yeah, I go to another line. Sorry.

As someone who has stood there, mindlessly scanning item after item, yes, we do like to talk to people.

It doesn't have to be a deep conversation. But "hi, having a good" or some small interaction makes the day better for everyone.

If they're good at their job, yes.

Friendly staff at Trader Joes is a big reason I keep shopping there.

If they don't, they should not apply to be a cashier. It's literally in the job description to make small talk with the customers you ring out. Target stated it something like "make each transaction a unique and personalized experience for the customer by engaging them in conversation".

So yes, I expected my cashiers to make small talk with each and every person they rang out.

I know, right?  I saw a list of things from the South that the rest of the country doesn't understand, and having a real conversation with a cashier was one of them.

I will confess it drove me crazy the first year - it took a while to get used to.  Shopping is not one of those things you do in a hurry around here.

They are supposed to talk while they ring and bag. It's not one or the other. Multi tasking.

And studies show that customers DO want an experience. They are paying for it and they want it d@mmit!

Corporations study consumer behavior and preferences. They use these studies to dictate how their employees should perform their jobs. Studies overwhelmingly say that customers want an experience when they shop. They want personalized attention from their cashiers. That's why they are trained to chat you up. It isn't just based on someone's whim. It's all backed by a zillion studies. The way the store is laid out, which items are placed where and at what height...all because of research and studies done on consumer behavior.

When I was a cashier back in the 80s, we were instructed to look at the name on the check and address them by their name.

"Thank you Ms Smith for shopping with us.  Hope to see you again."

It was all about making the customer feel appreciated.

I have a few favorite cashiers where I shop - one of whom always says "How're you doing today, Butterfly? I'm glad to see you". (I wear only butterfly pins, and always on my left shoulde.) She makes me smile, and she's one of the fastest cashiers around.

I haven't even looked. It's basic.

I am not doubting you don't like it. I get it. But a lot of people do like it and that's why it's done. It's marketing and business 101.

1. Writing thank you notes.

Because we'd really appreciate knowing you got our gift.

I would far rather someone CALL me and actually chat or text me than send me a note.

Wal-Mart.

At the ones in the city, you're damn lucky if you get a "Hi."

Showing you don't look at them as subservient.  Showing you are paying them attention, that you realize you aren't in the self-check-it line.  That they are someone other than an obstacle to your getting out of the store.

Try it sometime.
