Tahera Ahmad posted on Facebook that she faced discrimination and verbal abuse while she was on board a United Airlines flight on Friday.
This is Tahera Ahmad, an associate chaplain at Northwestern University.

On Friday, Ahmad posted an emotional message on Facebook detailing alleged racial and Islamophobic abuse she faced while on board a United Airlines flight.
In the post, she wrote that she was refused an unopened can of Diet Coke. When she asked why, the air steward allegedly told her that crew members were “unauthorized to give unopened cans to people because they may use it as a weapon on the plane.”
After complaining to the crew member, and publicly, Ahmad claims that she was then subjected to verbal abuse, with one passenger saying, “You Moslem, you need to shut the **** up.”

After posting about the incident, many took to social media to show solidarity with Ahmad using the hashtag #unitedfortahera.
In a statement to BuzzFeed News, United Airlines said it had reached out to Ahmad, and that it did not discriminate against its customers:
“United is a company that strongly supports diversity and inclusion, and we and our partners do not discriminate against our employees or customers. We are reaching out directly to Ms. Ahmad to get a better understanding of what occurred during the flight. We are also discussing the matter that Ms. Ahmad describes with Shuttle America, our regional partner that operated the flight.
“We look forward to speaking with Ms. Ahmad and hope to have the opportunity to welcome her back.”
BuzzFeed News has also reached out to Ahmad for comment.
In later update, Ahmad said she still had not had contact from a United representative:

Never. But I haven't flown since 9-11. Even back then you didn't get the whole can.
And JFTR, I would think beer would be different as it had to be purchased. You don't just routinely ask for, and get, beer.

So some people hate Muslims. Some hate right wingers. Some hate Christians. And no one is very shy about talking about it or yelling about it.
I also see the internet has become a good place to cry about how hard you have it and how you have been discriminated against, etc. etc. Not just in this case, but in many others.
I notice the air steward said "unauthorized to give unopened cans to PEOPLE" That discriminates against all people. LOL Some people are just looking for a reason to cry discrimination.
It is a tough world. Learn to live in it without going out of your way to look for slights from others.
I asked DH who flies all the time. He says no one ever gets their own can of soda or water. He said sometimes they will give out those tiny little bottles of water that are like four ounces but no one ever gets a full size can of soda. He also said the rules for alcohol are completely different. It has to be sold by the container.

Then the stewardess should have said so, not made a big deal out of opening the beer. And, I've asked for a full can on flights when they try to pour me the tiny cup. They always cough it up.

Eh, don't quote me. I haven't been on a plane since before 9-11. So what do I know. I just went by what DH said. My educated guess is that since you are required to purchase alcohol they have to give you the whole can.

I think the problem came when she BROUGHT her an opened can. She could have simply opened a new one in front of her. And if an unopened can is not allowed because it could be a weapon - the contents should not matter.
But regardless - I think it ridiculous that a man can yell racist obscenities at a woman on a plane and not get kicked off but a crying baby is a threat that requires removal.
United Airlines has a problem with their flight attendants. Every complaint has been about them.

Yes, nobody gets a full can of soda. Sooo, if nobody else is getting one, then how is this "discrimination". This is why people get sick of these whiners. Gawd. That isn't discrimination.

I have been given a full can off soda on numerous occasions.
The discrimination isn't in the can of coke - it is in the way she was spoken to and treated when she requested a new can that wasn't already open.

I don't see where the stewardess said anything wrong. She said it could be a 'weapon'. If that is their policy and they say that anyone else, that isn't discrimination. I have never been given a full can. And, yeah, they do treat alcohol differently, which I agree is stupid, but that doesnt' rise to the level of discrimination.

So, you didn't notice the part where after refusing the woman a full can, she then handed the man next to her a full can that wasn't open? If the excuse is that it could be used as a weapon - why was she the only one refused a closed can?

I've gotten full cans of soda on flights before. Cans are always opened by the attendant. Funny, I didn't know it was due to the weapon factor, I thought it was so you wouldn't shake it up and squirt the passenger in the next seat.

Just because the one guy received an unopened can of beer doesn't make her the only one whose can was opened.

No. Most probably were opened. But the way THIS instance was handled was very, very bad. Let's see, "No, YOU can't have an unopened can (and I still think she just wanted a FRESH drink, not one that was already open) because of safety, but sir, here YOU go" and hands him an un-open can. That was very, very stupid.

And let's not forget allowing another passenger to scream racist obscenities at her. Because we all know that United will throw people off the plane for much lesser offenses.

Yes, it is. If you won't give a woman with a head covering an un-opened can but will give the white man next to her one because of "safety", then yes, it is discrimination.
Now, had she simply said, "We must open all drinks before handing them to passengers", then no biggie and I would agree with you. But that is not what happened here.

It was not about the CONTENT, it was about an un-open can being used as a weapon. If the policy is no un-open cans, then there is no reason for that not to apply to beer. You open the can and hand it to him.
This was simply an excuse to be mean to this woman. And a poor one.

If she asked for a beer and was then NOT handed a can of beer, then you are comparing the same thing. Alcohol is treated differently, you know that. So,I have never been given a can of pop either, so was I discriminated against too?

The contents of the can DO NOT MATTER. If a FULL un-opened can of liquid can be used as a weapon - what is IN the can is IRRELEVANT. And THAT is the reason she was refused a new can. NOT because of the content - but because it could be used as a weapon.
Do you really think a full can of beer would hurt less than a full can of coke if you got bonked over the head with it?

LL, why do you keep arguing with me? I don't make the Airline rules. You KNOW they treat alcohol differently. They just do. Is it stupid? Yes. But, that is what they do.

There is NO REASON to give ANYONE any full can of anything without opening it if SAFETY is the reason. NONE.

And I still want to know why a fellow passenger yelling racist obscenities at another passenger was not removed from the plane. This IS the same airline that removed a young autistic girl and a crying baby.

That's a different issue completely. It isn't racism to not give her a can. And, playing the discrimination card for every damn thing gets old. And, yes the other passenger was a jerk.

The only one I agree with is the FIFTEEN year old autistic girl whose mother made a threat.

It is racism to refuse to give her a can because SHE might use it as a weapon and then hand a can to another passenger. It assumes HE won't use it as a weapon. So why is she the one they are concerned about using it as a weapon and not the other guy?

flan
Then remove the mother. The girl made no such threat.
