We had a busy day yesterday. Took the kids to a farm and picked strawberries. I got a little nervous when I happened across snake skins. Made me pick a little faster to get the heck out of there. Then to Middleburg for ice cream, and Leesburg for lunch. Went to a Chicago hot dog place. Drove through Gilbert's Corner and still, did not stop at the seafood truck. <sigh> Maybe next time. The boys had a good time and I learned what a city boy DH has become.

So Sweetness's party was Saturday. It started of horribly.

But it wound up being one of the best days of my life.

Sweetness LOVES anything water. DD couldn't get in the pool. DD's daddy forgot his trunks. Her other grandparents didn't bring their swim suits. So, guess who just HAAADDDD to spend every minute on the pool with Sweetness????

And then when I got home, I got the sweetest text from DD, thanking me for everything and telling me she could not have done it without me. And telling me how much she enjoyed watching me play with Sweetness and that it brought back happy memories of her and me when she was little. I nay have cried...for about an hour...

Anyway, just wanted to update y'all. After all my bitchin, it really was perfect for me and her. I don't really care about anything else...

Monday! It's a beautiful day even with the overcast and the rain.

Had a busy weekend with homework. Today is going to be the day that I get caught up on it. I get do to a life expectancy test and tell everyone just how long I will live and what kind of life I will have. Oh, joy!

In addition to homework, I have 4 loads of laundry to do as well as clean the bathroom. And figure out what to have for dinner.

Maybe I will try to get the freezers organized and the inventory spreadsheets updated again. We are due for a Sam's Club run but I need to know what all I need to get.

I just made a breakfast burrito. Delish. Scrambled some eggs and used the leftovers from taco night. Has a few strawberries on the side. Yummy.

Got a lead on a house for rent that we will go see later on. The prices here are SO out of whack. For $1500 a month here you get a pretty standard 3 bed/2 bath house without any updates at all that looks like the 80's barfed all over. In my home town that would get you a huge master bedroom with en suite, 3 other bedrooms 2 more bathrooms and all modern updates - a mini mansion. It's sticker shock here for me. Glad the school is paying and not me.

WOW. That's crazy. 3 bed/2 bath homes rent here for $3K to $4K a month. I don't think there is a house for rent that's $1500. The lowest is about $2200

My 1990s town house rents for $1550 here. The kitchen is updated but not the bathrooms. The master has en suite but it is just standard with single vanity & tub/bath combo.

The problem here is there has not been a single housing permit issued in the last 2 years. So literally not a single house has been built. Typically there are around 350 homes for sale and right now there are only about 125. Those who lost their homes in the bubble burst are renting and so the rents went sky high. Anything decent doesn't hit the market but gets taken on word of mouth. It's awful.

This town is pretty small and rural and there are a LOT of Somalian immigrants living here. The govt settled them here because they have been great workers at the Jennie O turkey plant. They will do the work SO much cheaper than anyone else will. Because they get govt assistance as well, the rentals are all taken by them. I am not being racist, it's just the facts of where I live. A lot of decent sized houses were made into duplexes so the owners could rent them out to the Somalians. To be honest, they don't treat the rental properties that well so anything that does open up isn't even something I would consider. The houses for sale here range in the $200-$300k's and are bare bones, no updates, totally 1985, no open floor plan, all carpet, typically no garage and not worth the money IMHO.

For a comparison, where we lived in Indiana, our townhouse had 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, fireplace, with a golf course view, 3 swimming pools, sand pit volley ball, basketball court, 24 hour security on site and carport for $850 a month.

For $850 a month here I would get 2 beds and 1 bath in the "ghetto" part of town.

I rent my other 4 bedroom/2.5 bath home for $995. No basement. That is actually below market about $200, but I've had the same tenant for 5 years and she's wonderful so I've never raised the rent.

Conor's 3 bedroom, 2 bath house would rent for $1500 a month.

His mortgage, with taxes and insurance rolled into escrow, only comes to $1300 a month.

He would have been foolish to rent.
