Colorado valedictorian comes out during graduation speech

DENVER — A high school valedictorian received a standing ovation when she came out as gay during her graduation speech in her Colorado mountain town, in contrast to the treatment received by a Boulder-area top student who was banned from making a similar affirmation.

Roaring Fork High School graduate Emily Bruell used signs as props during the speech and got the ovation as soon as she revealed the word "gay."

"I'm not just gay. I'm not just smart. No one is. No label is big enough to hold an entire person," Bruell said in her weekend speech in Carbondale, the full text of which was posted on the Web site of a local newspaper, The Post Independent.

Principal Drew Adams, who had read the speech about two weeks before it was delivered, told the AP Tuesday that neither he nor Bruell had expected her to be interrupted by the ovation. He said he had known students and teachers would be welcoming, but also that graduations draw family and friends from outside the isolated town of 6,000 near Aspen.

"As a school community we have embraced tolerance," Adams said.

He added Bruell's speech, which he called courageous, would help other students feel safe at his school, and praised her "insight about how we have to lead our lives."

Adams added he worked in the Boulder area earlier in his career and was surprised to see that a principal there had had the opposite reaction to a student who wanted to come out in his valedictory speech.

Evan Young had said he was not notified until just a few minutes before the May 16 Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School ceremony in Longmont that he wouldn't be allowed to speak or be recognized as valedictorian. He said he had agreed to make some suggested changes to the speech he planned to deliver, but refused to remove comments about his sexuality. School officials contend he did not submit a revised draft.

Young was able to deliver his speech Sunday at an awards ceremony held by the gay rights group Out Boulder. The Daily Camera newspaper reported that the crowd, which included U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, cheered during the speech, which ended with Young asking people to hug someone different from themselves.

A Gay Straight Alliance group has been active at Roaring Fork for years, Adams said. Bruell turned to a teacher who co-sponsors the group when she first considered addressing her sexuality in her speech.

Nationally, research has found gay and bisexual high school students are more likely than their heterosexual classmates to attempt suicide or do risky things like smoke and drink alcohol. A study published earlier this month in the New England Journal of Medicine found that gay and bisexual children are more likely to be bullied as they're growing up, even at an early age.

Bruell told the newspaper in an interview Monday that she wanted to write a speech about judgment and labels.

"I didn't think I could do that without being honest about this part of me," she said. "I felt it was really important to leave the high school not hiding anything."

Do we really want to keep applauding people who take over events and then make it ALL ABOUT THEM? This is getting tiring. Graduation isn't about YOU, even if you are the Valedictorian. Not sure how that is right to take over an event meant for everyone and run your own agenda.

There's another article about a boy that was not allowed to give his speech because he was going to do the same thing.

Graduation is about all the students - not for one person to hijack it for their personal "outing".

Well, that's the thing. The school can forbid them but once they are up there on the Podium they can still pretty much do or say whatever they want to. But , hijacking every event for YOU, YOU, YOU is just being a selfish beyotch.

I'm going to disagree, and apparently the audience felt the same way, since she got a standing ovation.

Yep.  That's exactly why the other school just refused to let him give a speech.   It's not a personal platform to talk about your sexual preferences.

It's a chance to talk about WHO you are.

So, flan - would your response be the same if she had gotten up there and given her testimony about being saved and how God had changed her life and how it makes her who she is?

You magically remember every single one of my 10,000+ posts?

I also agreed that the young girl should have been able to cite God as a major influence in her school essay. Does that "mesh?"

Here's the thing: I don't see the world in terms of Black and White, so I judge each situation individually.

The fact that ONE time you agree with something that is so absolutely clear and shouldn't be able to be argued with is not enough to weigh against everything else you've ever said.

But why do you care? I don't have to believe what you say.

Hard to know if it was appropriate or not without reading the transcript.
Most HS speeches at graduation are boring and drippy and contain endless boring anecdotes from the speakers childhood or something. Do we crucify them for making their speech 'all about them'?
If it was approved by the principle and the attendees loved it, I am going to go out on a limb and say it was probably okay, even if it sounds really weird on paper.

Just because the principal approved, and the audience seemed to approve, doesn't make it the right forum. I don't agree that society's acceptance of bad manners make it good manners. It's still bad manners, it's just that now no one cares. To me, that speaks more of the deterioration of society. That turning what is supposed to be an inspiration speech into one's personal exploit is okay? Nope.

through your own prism only--thank god not everyone else does--this young woman ruined an event that should have been a shared accomplishment, a shared right of passage, a day for every one of the graduates

this was a selfish act by an entitled little girl--had I been present, as a graduate, would have been disappointed / furious

I'm not in a relationship with you, so I don't really care.  Furthermore, that rule obviously isn't general and only applies to lying directly TO you, which has nothing to do with whether you lie to others.

And I didn't call you a liar.  However, your viewpoints on issues seem to be fluid depending on what the view of the day is.  Rather like liberal ideology.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

not the ones I've heard--remember ours to this day--from a young man who is now a rather prominent figure with the World Health Organization--he spoke about promise, about hope, about standing on the threshold of a bright future, about our responsibility as americans to our country and to each other and to those who had sacrificed so much that we might be standing there that day

it was not selfish at all, not about him at all--was moving and profound--and when he finished ( will remember his last line for the rest of my life ) the entire venue ( about 6k people ) were silent for a moment, thinking--and then one or two people began applauding and soon everyone joined in

am a traditionalist perhaps but believe THAT is the purpose of a Valedictory speech--he was brilliant

Exactly.  In all the ones I've ever been to it's always been about the graduating class.  The things they've done, senior trip, late nights studying, the senior prank, favorite teachers, last minute research papers, winning football games, blah blah blah.  Then onto where they will go and how one day they can catch up together again.  Go out and be successful.  Pretty vanilla.  I've never once heard a speech about sexuality or individuality or any of that crap.  It's about the whole class.

Well, I've only been to one (DS1's) and we couldn't even hear the speech.

Honestly, depending on the size of the school, how could you possibly hope to hit the various cliques?

It's usually a general speech about how they had fun and where they hope to go. Inspiration, blah blah blah.

There is a lot of advice out there. This is from wikiHow:

In writing your speech, consider being brutally honest about your own experiences. The only real original thing you bring to your speech is how you within that you truly think others can learn from and be motivated, think seriously about sharing them as the truly thought-provoking part of your speech.[1] Naturally, that doesn't mean conspiracy theories, nastiness, or negativity; what it does mean is showing the ways in which you have grown personally during your high school years and finding ways to reflect this as a group experience.

Brutally honest about your experiences?  So we get to hear tales of her sexual experiences?  Or what about bullying?  Or she thinks the school is fvcked up?  No one really wants to hear others rave on about their sexuality.  What were these people supposed to do?  Return her classlessness with booing and show how unclassy they are?  We share far too much in this day and age.  We should share a bit less.  Thought provoking is one thing.  Coming out is another.

Can a straight person get up there and talk about how many sexual partners they had and how freeing it was to discover their sexuality?

Why? Her sexuality had absolutely nothing to do with graduating. What she did was selfish because it was all about her and not about her class.

Bruell told the newspaper in an interview Monday that she wanted to write a speech about judgment and labels.

"I didn't think I could do that without being honest about this part of me," she said. "I felt it was really important to leave the high school not hiding anything."

They did NOT have to give her a standing ovation. Her principal did NOT have to approve her speech.

Who knows how many other gay classmates were listening to her, and had NOT told anyone because they were afraid?

This is another example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
