Q. Hate Dogs Love Money

Q. Hate Dogs Love Money: An elderly family friend passed away and bequeathed me all her assets, plus her four dogs. I am stunned as she never discussed this with me. I am grateful she thought of me as the closest person to family and left me with an inheritance that will pay off a lot of my mortgage. But I hate dogs. So far I have made sure their basic needs are met and do not mistreat them in any way, but I hate looking after them. To be totally honest, I am looking forward to when they die. I want to find homes for them where they will be met with more enthusiasm, yet I feel guilty because of the whole money issue. Can I keep the money but not her dogs, or is that pure evil?

A: Your friend bequeathed you all her worldly goods, including her beloved dogs. Obviously, she didn’t know you well, or else she would have known you would simply want to kick the dogs to the curb. You should not keep them. You need to find them good homes, and probably the easiest way to do that is to locate a dog rescue group that can place them. If you yourself individually find homes for the animals, you are obligated to give a substantial check for food and future veterinary care to each new owner. If you give all the dogs to a group, so that you are not an evil person, you need to make a generous donation to cover the work they do. Since you got everything from this elderly friend, spreading the wealth a little should still leave you with plenty, while absolving you from a lifetime of guilt.

Q. Re: Hating dogs: I hope this woman knows that these poor animals, who did not ask to be placed with a clear monster, will be split up and probably euthanized. Do you know how many pets are in shelters? Suck it up and keep them!

A: Someone who hates dogs and wishes they were dead is going to be a terrible owner. It’s true the animals might be split up, but that’s better than being in a miserable home. If the inheritor gives these dogs to a rescue group that does not euthanize, they should be able to be placed.

Q. Re: Non–Dog Lovers Are Not Monsters: People who don’t love dogs are not monsters. Please don’t let that statement stand.

A: I didn’t endorse that statement. She is entitled to hate dogs. I told her to make sure the dogs go to good homes. However, if she was given money to care for the dogs, and she keeps it for herself while getting rid of the dogs, she is not a nice person.

I can't believe she gave her money & dogs to a person that she barely knew. If she knew her even a little bit I think it would have been obvious she doesn't like dogs. She should have given her dogs to a no kill shelter along with all her money instead of this person.

4 dogs is a BIG commitment and a huge job all on its own. I don't think the second letter writer should have called the OP a monster. That's a bit harsh. She didn't ask for this intrusion into her life and she isn't mistreating them. She just doesn't like them and wants them re homed where they will be loved.

I don't think she is under any obligation to keep the dogs, or to use the inheritance towards the care of these animals. Give the dogs to a shelter, and enjoy your friend's generosity.

I definitely would NOT send the dogs to a shelter. They deserve better.

I'd find someone to take them. If she doesn't want them, don't keep them.

Definitely should have checked with the new "owner."

I have three dogs. If someone left me four more I'd go insane. I'm a dog lover but couldn't do it. I'm not raising a farm.

That's how I feel. I love dogs and animals but if someone left me 4.. Well that's a lot to begin with plus adding on to the ones I have.. Big responsibility. Not sure I have the room for that either. I would depend on the size of the dogs.

We don't really have the room for the dogs we have. Between all three of them there is 200 lbs of dogs roaming around. And 100 in our bed at night. It's tough. But when you love them you do what's right. The person should have made sure whoever she left to could handle them. Four at once is a lot.

It's moronic to call someone who doesn't like dogs a monster. She's not mistreating them, she just doesn't like or want them. I think she should give them to a no-kill shelter, along with a large donation.

I think giving a donation would be a good idea. We have a really nice no kill shelter and, depending on what kind of dogs they are, they might get adopted right away. Our no kill shelter has a hard time placing any dog that has pit in it because of the rep that goes with them. Any other dog gets adopted in a matter of days.

You know, the more I think about this the more aggravated I get. Taking on a pet isn't something you just do. When you take on a pet you take on responsibility for their life. We have three dogs and in the last six months it wouldn't surprise me if we spent $5000 on them. Layla has allergies and has been going to the vet every other week for three months. She's been on tons of antibiotics, steroids, and allergy meds. She will probably have to be on a prescription allergy med forever. And right now she's on prescription food that runs $75/bag. We're hoping to eventually take her off that though. We had to take Carlee to the emergency vet when she ate a wasp and had a reaction. Just recently we took all three in for their yearly check ups and shots. That was another chunk of change. Hemi had a little spot on his nose he kept rubbing on the carpet. Like it itched. We asked the vet to look at it. It was infected. So we have antibiotics for that. And when he looked down into his ears he found out he had a yeast infection in his ears so we got drops for that. Three shots for three dogs plus medicine for all of them. It's a lot. Not only in money but in time. I have to remember who gets what med when and dole it out. Pets are a lot of responsibility and if you don't want that you shouldn't take one on.

Some no kill shelters have a waiting list because they are overpopulated. They won't let you just drop off an animal, you have to wait your turn until a spot is open.

That's true but our no kill shelter has a book with all the dogs.  You don't walk through the back and pick one out.  You go through the book and pick a dog or two and they bring them out for you to socialize with.  They take their time.  It's about getting comfortable with each other.  I bet most shelters would let you put a picture and information up there!

To alleviate the guilt, if I was her, I would find them GOOD homes, and write a check for thier care.

I was interested in a cat.  They took me in the back to look at them in their cages.  I picked one.  Had to fill out an application & wait two days for approval.  Then went & picked her up.  I don't know if the wait was to be sure I really wanted her or if it just took that long for them to process the paperwork.

When my dog got too arthritic to negotiate my stairs he went to live with my mom.  I paid rent to her every month & his vet bills.  She didn't require it but I just felt guilty thrusting the expenses on her.

I think this is normal these days.  A lot of people adopt pets and then change their minds and dump them.  When we got Layla we had to sign a contract and list our vet plus we had to agree to bring her back to the shelter if we ever got rid of her.  They also did a home check.  That consisted of them bringing her out to our house and making sure she had a yard to run in.  The stayed for a bit and introduced the two dogs together to make the transition smooth.  I was thankful they did.

Shelters in my area are no kill shelters. Most people go there to get their pets. It is so popular that in fact, they get more dogs every 14 days. They will work with owners to re home pets. She should find a good home for each dog and give generously to each new family.

Whatever.  The last time I owned a dog was 30 years ago.  We got her from the pound.  Back then, you either got her from the pound, a breeder, or a pet shop.  You adopted a child, you got a pet.  I don't know the difference between all these "places" you speak of.

My point was that if she doesn't want the dogs, get rid of them.   And unless her will stated that her money was to be used for the care of said animals, she is under no obligation, moral or otherwise, to give it to the new caregiver.
