Dear Harriette: Do I need Permission for a Tattoo?

DEAR HARRIETTE: I want to get a tattoo. I have not talked about it with my parents, but I do not necessarily feel the need to ask them for permission. The tattoo will be small and not in a visible location. Multiple people in my family have tattoos, and everyone is relatively neutral about the topic. I am 18 and would use the money I earn working to pay for it. If my parents are not strict and I will not be using their money to pay for the tattoo, do I still have to ask them for permission? -- Itching for Ink, Richmond, Virginia

DEAR ITCHING FOR INK: Your trepidation suggests that you think that you should ask for permission or there is a chance your parents will say no. It could also be that you want to exert your independence and want to take that step right now. Whatever the case may be, now is not the time for you to sneak and get a tattoo.

Instead, go to your parents and let them know that this is what you want to do. Share the plan with them, including how you intend to pay for it. Ask for their blessing and also for their recommendation for a safe place to get the tattoo.

Here's what I told my son. If you come home with a tattoo, then I am going to take that as a sign that you have money to burn and waste. And, then on that day, you will be handed your car insurance, tuition and all your bills and can on that day start paying rent or move out, lol.

Tattoos are important!

Seriously, I think it depends a lot on the motivation for getting one. Mine represent my kids, my DH, my favorite vacation spot. My next one will be for Itty bitty.

And I was a lot older than 18 when I got my first one.

I often think this when I see panhandlers.  I'm like, you have a billion tattoos and piercings, which are super expensive, and your sneakers are worth a few hundred bucks.  You don't need my spare change.

So they can't have a little fun without you kicking them out?  What if they spent the day at an amusement park with their friends?  That's a cool couple hundred blown with nothing to show for it.  Your kids can't spend their money on anything but necessities?

A tattoo should represent freedom and independence. Sorry, but when Mommy is footing the bill, you don't deserve a tattoo!!

I was 18 when I got my first one. (And my 2nd.) I got it a couple weeks after getting my belly button pierced. I told my mom of neither, but I was at tech school at the time, so not still living at home, although my mom did pay my cell phone bill at the time. She found out about my tattoo when I was home for Christmas, and spied my belly ring while I was stretching and asked if I had done anything else she didn't know about while I was gone. She asked, so I showed her. On New Years eve, we both went and got a tattoo. I got my 3rd tattoo at 19, and didn't ask for permission, or announce it beforehand either. I was paying my own cell bill and stationed 2 states away at the time though. My mom has tattoos so they weren't viewed as a big deal. My dad is more anti-tattoo, but since my 1st 3 were on my back, it was always an out of sight, out of mind thing for him. I got my 4th this past March, by far the largest, and most noticeable being brightly colored and on my forearm. Again, no announcement beforehand, except DH who accompanied me, and dad clearly wasn't pleased when he seen it, but couldn't say much since I am 28 and been on my own for a decade.

At 18, parental permission isn't a requirement, however, if you are living at home and your parents are paying the bills, it may be beneficial to get their actual opinion of it first, because whatever consequences that follow it are ultimately on you.

Flan, I can't remember, but have you seen my newest? I think you'd like it.

I don't think so Demonia.

I wish I knew how to post pic's.

DH loves my latest one. Sometimes he shows me off (depending on the friend).

Meh. It will be small and in a place you can't readily see it. Go get it. You don't need their permission and you don't need to tell them. When they eventually find out, shrug and treat is as no big deal.

Well I am as horrible as LGS. Told DS that as long as he was living under my roof and I was paying the bills, no tattoos or body piercings. He is grateful today I was strict.

I got my first tat at 40. I really didn't have a clue what I permanently wanted on my body until then. But I love it...

would probably be ok with the tattoo--not any piercings however--rings, rods, hooks, loops, etc. just look ridiculous on damn near anyone

Meh. As long as piercing are not on the face, I don't really care.

Caitlyn pierced her belly button last year. Repierced again a few months ago. My eats are pierced 3 on on side and 2 on the other. They both had 3 but one got infected so I let it heal and grow up and just never bothered to peirce it again.

Caitlyn has 5 or 6 in each ear.

Tattoos are more permanent though. Those need to be really seriously thought about in opinion. I think having an age limit of 21 would be ok.

But it is her money, her body. If she can go get an abortion, getting a tattoo shouldn't be a big deal.

I don't have a good picture of the back, (and this pict isn't real clear) but you get the gist of it. It's the last 8 bars of the song that played when we got married. He has the first 8 bars on his right arm...

My husband told my son when he was a teenager that he had put in his will that in order to inherit his portion that a dr. will inspect him for any tattoos on his body and if there were any he would be disinherited. He believed him Lol! no that wasn't in our will and yes he would still receive his part.

That's been me too. But I think I have decided. I just need to find someone to draw it out for me. I want a bouquet of both my grandmothers, my sister's, my mom's, and my favorite flowers - so five different flowers in one bouquet.

Small and easily covered? As a parent I wouldn't care.

But I'm not the Letter Writer's parent. Hopefully the Letter Writer's parents aren't unreasonable.

And it is easier to ask forgiveness than gain permission.

Honestly, I dont' really care if he does get tattoos.  They dont' bother me.  But, I don't want him being frivolous with money and I view that as a very frivolous expense.  Nothing wrong with frivolous expenses, I buy stupid crap all the time. But, I think that is something that he should fund himself because if he gets one now, it is because I am subsidizing his life and I just don't think that is the thing to do at this point.  He will be done in a year and a half, then I can hand him  his student loans and go do his thing.

We were that way with our kids too! Like your our is glad he never got a tattoo.  He said he was the rebellious one in his band since he was the only one without a tattoo.    His wife does not like tattoos so another reason why he is glad.  It may have not bothered me so much as my husband.
