Letters: Duggar story enrages
June 12, 2015
Columnist Kathleen Parker is correct in writing that the Republican party will not be successful if it is too closely tied to a specific religion ["The Duggars and presidential politics," Opinion, June 4].
She could explore many reasons why this is so, but instead she spends most of her column excoriating the Duggar family. She says Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar had too many children and deplores that one of their sons acted in a sexually inappropriate manner toward five girls.
Then she uses the McCarthy-esque tactic of guilt by association by claiming the Duggars are "embraced" by the evangelical Quiverfull movement, even though the family denies being associated with it.

It's quite obvious Parker has an ax to grind that has little to do with religion and the Republican party. It seems to me that the immoral part of this is that an otherwise wholesome family should be chewed up by Parker and a media that saturates our society with violence and sex to make money.

I feel compelled to point out an obvious oversight here. When a child molests a child, as Josh Duggar did when he was 13 and 14 years old, there are usually two victims. How come no one is questioning whether Josh was molested?
Children are not born pedophiles, but pedophiles can certainly breed victims. A perfect setting is a Quiverfull family where the husband is the authority and his wife is merely a breeder. Just look at Michelle Duggar's eyes as she turns toward Jim Bob. The woman seems hypnotized.
Also, the children are isolated from society, homeschooled and brainwashed to believe their father is the ultimate authority. The state trooper and friend Jim Bob consulted was later jailed on child pornography charges! How come the Duggars didn't go to a licensed professional? By the time the first police report was generated, the statute of limitations had run out.
It's easy to understand why the children would now want to protect their father, since their show produces high income for the family. But the parents need to be investigated.

I want to know why the Duggars haven't hired a lawyer to sue the ones who reported this.

Okay, so they are just GUESSING that he was abused? Way to abuse your power press.
The Duggars are going to be very very very wealthy people if this keeps up. Unless there is a basis for this article they are just basically accusing without evidence.

This is basically saying someone abused Josh. If that didn't happen that's a very bad thing to accuse someone of publicly.

I think the writer brings up a good point in that no article has mentioned concern for Josh - ie was he abused and is that where he learned it? There has been concern for his privacy but no concern that he may have been acting out behavior he learned somewhere. And I think it's a valid question.
Most teenage boys who are curious about female anatomy do NOT resolve their curiosity by touching their 5 year old sister's privates repeatedly. They go to the library and look for a medical textbook. Or they watch Cinemax.

The youngest of the two sisters would have been 9.
Where is the 5 yr old coming in at?

Actually it's a fallacy that most abusers have been abused themselves. I was surprised when I found out the stats.

I think a serious conversation about the difference between abuse and curiosity.

So was he younger when that happened or was it a different girl?

Just as an aside, Jessa is now expecting her first child with husband Ben.

Groping your younger sisters goes WAY beyond "curiosity."

Agreed.
Most typical teenage boys, when they get curious, will sneak a look at a nudie mag, or find a Gray's Anatomy and look up the girl parts, or watch a movie they shouldn't. Typical teenage boys do NOT touch their 5 year old sister under her panties repeatedly. That is NOT curiosity it's abuse. Not sure how that can even be questioned.

And I still don't see it as abuse. Sorry. Abuse is more about power and control.
This doesn't seem like that.
And again, I don't think any of it should be public fodder. All those involved were children.

Ok. So I guess every kid who ever played doctor was both abused and abuser.
I just don't see labeling someone as a pedophile for engaging in a little touchy feely when they were a child, admitted to it, got help and completed the assigned punishment for it over 10 years ago.

And I didn't say Flan and every kid. I said every kid that did.

Most typical teenage boys don't grow up in a household run in the fashion that the Duggars run theirs. Very close quarters house with little to no opportunity to sneak a nudie mag or watch a movie that they shouldn't. I don't know if "typical teenage boys" actions or activities can really be applied in thinking about what goes on there.
