A Pennsylvania couple is facing manslaughter charges after their 1-year-old daughter died of an infection that could have been easily treated with antibiotics.
Ebed Delozier, 29, and Christine Delozier, 34, were charged last week with felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children in the death of their 18-month old daughter, Hope Delozier, the Press Sun & Bulletin reports.
Hope died in March of invasive group A streptococcus bacteria that health officials believe originated in her left ear, WPRI reports.
Christine told interviewers in March that Hope had never seen a doctor or received vaccinations because she and Ebed didn't believe in vaccinations or other aspects of modern medicine, WBNG reports.

They instead treated the toddler with homeopathic remedies and herbal therapy, the Bulletin reports. The couple also said they had no money to cover the medical expenses.
Christine said that on the night of March 23, she noticed that Hope's breathing was shallow so she gave the child CPR for about 30 minutes before taking her to Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital and telling nurses that she needed 'some help.'
A nurse at the hospital said in a report that Hope's parents made it 'clear they were against antibiotics and other chemicals associated with modern medicine.'
An emergency room nurse said that Hope wasn't breathing when she got to the hospital and as staff worked to resuscitate her, Christine became upset and said 'you're putting holes in her,' and 'you're putting chemicals in her.'

Parents: Ebed Delozier, 29 (right), and Christine Delozier, 34 (left), were charged with felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children in the death of their 18-month old daughter
Warrant: The parents were arraigned on June 10 and Ebed (above) was sent to Bradford County Correctional Facility on a bench warrant for an unrelated case
The toddler was later pronounced dead by an emergency room physician.
An autopsy revealed that the child died of a cerebral abscess and terminal cerebral edema caused by the bacteria.
A forensic pathologist also determined that Hope was dehydrated and malnourished.
The pathologist added that the infection could have been treated with a simple antibiotic, according to WBNG.
The child's death was ruled a homicide.
Ebed told investigators that the child seemed to be getting better, and he said if he and Christine had any idea how serious her condition was, they would have sought medical help sooner, WBNG reports.
Rhode Island Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott said Thursday that Hope's condition was a rare complication of a common bacteria, WPRI reports.
He described Hope's situation as a 'freak case,' saying the bacteria progressed more rapidly than it normally would.

Many people choose to allow ear infections to clear on their own. Because usually they will. This complication is rare and could not be foreseen. And in fact, some ear infections are caused by viruses and can't be treated with antibiotics, anyway and sometimes it is hard to tell. Even the medical community debates using antibiotics regularly for ear infections so I do not think parents need to be charged with murder over it.

The boys' pediatrician says they are now recommending against use of antibiotics in situations of ear infections, as they usually go away on their own. That being said, if my boys are exhibiting other side effects such as vomiting or lethargy or severe pain, they will give them antibiotics.

Even the Doctor said this is very rare. I am sure there are many times I did not treat my kids' ear infections. And, there are many times I didn't run them to doctors for the flu, sore throats, etc.
There are two important things to note in the article above. The first is that when the child showed signs of distress, her mother took her to the hospital. The second is that even the doctor in the article said this complication was a "freak case".

Yes. That has happened here. Most of the Amish and Mennonite here will utilize modern medicine, especially for their children, including getting them immunized.

Yes, if she took her to the hospital, then she did indeed seek care. And, honestly, some young parents aren't very smart and dont really recognize distress. Not that they are uncaring but often uneducated.

It also said she was dehydrated and malnourished. That's neglect. Not enough info about that to determine if it's murder but it it's neglect for sure.

If the baby was sick, she likely wasn't eating and drinking enough. Many people get dehydrated and malnourished when they are ill.

And if my child gets dehydrated when she is sick, I give her medicine. If that doesn't help I seek medical attention. These people killed their child.

I'm willing to bet half the people you know are dehydrated at any given time, sick or not. And again, it is a FREAK case for an ear infection to be life threatening. There is no intent to neglect or harm their child. What you might do does not mean everyone has to do the exact same thing to not be a killer.

Just because you didn't intend to kill your baby doesn't mean she is any less dead. They are neglectful. They didn't seek help until she was already dead. Whether or not that's what they intended, it's what they actually did. They neglected her until she died. And most reasonable people would seek treatment for their dying baby, most reasonable people wouldn't watch her dehydrate as the bacteria invaded her brain and killed her.

Seriously, if this had happened to parents that don't eskew modern medicine, but simply took the position that ear infections can and do clear on their own - would this be such a problem? Or is it their attitude in general you are wanting to punish them for? Because this FREAK case could have happened to any parent that doesn't run to the doctor for every little thing.

AMA is recommending AGAINST anti-biotic treatment for common ear infections. How were the parents to know this was not a common ear infection? Even the doctor said this was a RARE case.
Gosh, I'm probably dehydrated and malnourished now, due to my infection. It only takes 12 hours for both to be set into effect. A child under the age of 2 will show serious signs for dehydration and malnourishment within 18 hours. Mom did take her to the hospital.
IMHO, there is no clear case of child abuse here.

Kids die sometimes from illnesses. My DD11 ended up in intensive care with a horrible e coli infection even when I was taking her to the doctor everyday. And her only symptoms to begin with were for a bladder infection - which is another thing that often clears on its own or with home remedies. Had I waited even one more day to take her in, it could have been very, very bad. Would I have killed her because I didn't run to the hospital over a bladder infection? The only reason I went when I did was because she was prone to bladder infections and I wanted it cleared quickly. In fact, the first day we went - she tested NEGATIVE for any infection and they sent us home. So, it would have been completely reasonable for me to just think she had some kind of bug when she started with a fever and throwing up the next day.
You cannot call parents murderers simply because their child dies of a freak bacterial infection.

I really hope they were loving parents who put their kid's health before their disbelief in modern medicine. I don't know enough about medicine to know if she could go from 'appearing better' to barely breathing faster than the parents could notice and get her help.
Here is what I have issue with.
An emergency room nurse said that Hope wasn't breathing when she got to the hospital and as staff worked to resuscitate her, Christine became upset and said 'you're putting holes in her,' and 'you're putting chemicals in her.
That doesn't sound good to me. Her baby is dying and she is concerned about the 'chemicals' they are using to try and save her life.
Any why did she wait 30 minutes before taking her baby to the hospital when her breathing became shallow?

She was attempting CPR. If she was home alone, she was probably freaking out, trying to get the baby's breathing to stabilize before she stopped to take her.

It's a tragedy, for sure, but I'm not sure these people murdered their child. As someone above stated, a lot of parents aren't particularly wired to notice signs of distress. A friend of mine is dealing with this currently, and I personally have dealt with it. She dropped her sons off to visit their father for a week. He was perfectly healthy. During the week, he told her he had a cough. Ex never said anything, other than he was a little sick and he would "wait and see" if he got better. By the end of the week she picked him up and he could barely move and had lost 8 pounds. She took him to the hospital and he had pneumonia in both lungs. Fortunately, he was treated and is recovering. The ex said he thought he had a cold and needed time for it to go through his system. He had never had pneumonia before, so they didn't know.
When my boys first started getting pneumonia, I had no idea, nor did any of my family. We treated it like a common cold and waited for it to pass. I left town for a funeral one weekend and when I came back, both boys looked pale, didn't have much energy, and coughed horribly. I took them in and yep, both had pneumonia. Another time my mother sat with my sick child so I could go to work. I called often during the day, and she kept saying he was fine. I got home he could barely walk and threw up at my feet. She swears he had been fine all day.
Untrained and inexperienced people just don't know what to look for, IMO. Doesn't make them abusers or murderers, just ignorant. Sure, in hindsight this seems like common sense, but at the time it's happening, I'm not convinced they neglected their child.
I really hope they were loving parents who put their kid's health before their disbelief in modern medicine. I don't know enough about medicine to know if she could go from 'appearing better' to barely breathing faster than the parents could notice and get her help.

I don't run run my child to the doctor for every little thing. But I do take her when something doesn't clear up after a few daysMore if she doesn't show improvement after a few days. if your child isn't getting better, then she is suffering. I don't want my child to suffer needlessly, so I take her to get get help. It would have killed me to sit and watch my daughter suffer with any ailment that badly without getting her help. These people sounds like they are mentally ill. Screaming about chemicald and such when your daughter cannot breathe is ridiculous. Do whatever you have to in order to save my baby! Why wasn't the mom thinking along those lines? Please save her, please help my baby girl! That's what I would expect to hear. Some concern for the welfare of her daughter, some understanding of the gravity of the situation. Not worry about chemicals.
And you are correct, earaches should not be treated with antibiotics. I never said they should. The only reason to go to the doctor is not to get medicine. You go to the doctor so the doc can check for things that are beyond the scope of understanding for the lay person. So your doctor can use her expertise and education to look for things a parent would not notice, to look for things a parent would not know about, to look for things a parent doesn't have the instruments to look for. You also go to the doctor so that they doctor can educate you on next steps, symptoms to look out for, things to worry about if you see them. A doctor's job goes beyond just passing out meds. They are there to look for things we as parents cannot see and to educate us on what to look for in order to seek further help.
These people chose not to seek out help when their child was sick. That decision cost them their daughter. It's neglect whether or not they intended to kill her. She died from their poor choices.

That bothered me too. I do feel that the parents thought they were doing the right thing but at least be open to modern medicine.

You do not know that. This was a freak case. Even if they went to the doctor when the ear infection started, this could have happened. You have even admitted it is normal to NOT give antibiotics, so going to the doctor just to confirm what they already knew - that she had an ear infection - would not have done anything. This was a weird and freak complication.

Of course not. But they do sound more than a little neglectful. Living in a camper isn't exactly a great way to bring up a child. And multiple warrants is a lifestyle...a criminal one.

Wow. Nothing like insulting a whole group of people who live in campers. I guess not being rich is a good reason to call people bad parents. Talk about snobbery!

While I vehemently disagree with people who avoid the advantages of modern medicine, and don't get their children vaccinated and treated for easily treatable illnesses,
I have heard also that overuse of antibiotics for children's ear infections is contributing to the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
So it's hard to fault them for THIS decision.

Campers don't have electricity or running water...so no, it isn't a great way to bring up a child. They don't need a mansion, but they do need basic necessities.
Camping in a tent for the summer on your own property is fine. Those people had a home to return to. The people in the OP are LIVING in a camper. That is not an appropriate long term place to raise a child.

Not a mobile home...a camper. Campers don't have running water or electricity. Both are required by law in order to have a child living with you. So flame the law, not me.

You are wrong. At the lake, there are a LOT of campers. It's a fishing camp for a lot of guys. There are no mobile homes, there are campers. All have running water and electricity. They also have heat and air.

This camper was not at the lake nor st a campsite where hook ups are available for people to hook their campers into electricity and water. This camper was parked at the end of a street. Not at a campsite. So they were NOT hooked up to anything. Streets don't have camper hook ups available unless it's a campground.

WTF are you talking about? The place on the lake isn't a campground. It's an actual neighborhood. Thre are hoses mixed with campers. They ALL have electricity and water!
A camper does not manufacture electricity on its own. It needs a source of power. Either the people are bringing a generator or they are connecting the camper to a power source. A camper does not generate electricity. The people you are talking about probably have a generator. Water must come from a source. The camper does not have a source of water unless it is hooked up to something or is carrying its own water. Either way...it is not an approved acceptable way to live long term according to the law.

Well. here is a pict of cone of the campers at the lake. It even has a deck. I've been in it, it has running water and electricity. It even has a kitchen. It's a camper, hooked up to sewer and electric lines.
I will see if I can get them to send me a pict of the inside.
But they didn't bother to even find out what the situation was. The charges are appropriate.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Growing up, my grandfather had a camper he could put on his truck. We used to take it on vacation. We'd find a place where we could hook up and get utilities.

I find it amazing that some of the same people who give sympathy to parents who kill their kids by forgetting them in a car are the same ones that think not treating an ear infection with antibiotics is murder.

Two totally different situations. These parents didn't "forget" to take their child to a doctor.

No. They were actually caring for her. She died of a freak spreading of a bacterial infection - not due to the actions of her parents.
