Sadly, because there is no "test" in social studies, they don't make time to study history.
I worked at a place that taught citizenship so immigrants could apply and pass the citizenship test. They worked very hard, and usually passed with flying colors. Give that same test to a native born US citizen, and you'll be totally embarrassed.

My DH, the Brit, knows more about that stuff than most Americans.

I know more than most because I grew up and still live here in Philadelphia where it all started. The Declaration of Independence, Independence Hall and so much more. Most people do not even know that Philadelphia was the first capitol of the United States.
Representatives from the 13 colonies convened the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1774. The following year the Second Continental Congress met at Philadelphia's State-House. Baltimore; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; York, Pennsylvania; and College Hall in Philadelphia were also meeting sites for the Second Continental Congress.
Under the Articles of Confederation, from 1781 to 1788, Congress convened in Philadelphia; Princeton, New Jersey; Annapolis, Maryland; Trenton, New Jersey; and New York. Since the U.S. Congress was established by the Constitution in 1789, it has convened in three locations: New York, Philadelphia, and its permanent home in Washington, D.C.
I think there should be a test on how government works to get the right to vote.

I'd like to see the test. Is there a link?

One of the many reasons my dd and dil want to home school their children. My daughter loves history. She picked history for her miner in college, she said she could teach it as well if not better then some teachers teach it at school. Science too.
