Their offense finally showed up--and they needed it since their defense was not up to par. However, they were up 4-0, so it's hard to maintain defensive intensity when it's 4-0 instead of 0-0.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Great game; watched it on TV over here. The US really came out in a strong way and kept control of the ball and game all the way. Congratulations to them. Japan was just not prepared for the offense; I wonder if they did enough study about the US team prior to the game...
Carli Lloyd was finally allowed to play where she belongs - as an attacking mid. Previously, she was a defensive midfielder. That is NOT her strength, as we saw today, she is a scoring machine. And putting Wambach on the bench helped too.

Wambach has been on the bench most of the tournament. Even the game that Rapinoe and Holiday were suspended for, Wambach only played about 5 minutes at the end.
I thought it was a bit attention-whoreish for Wambach and Rampone to wait until the very last to get their medals--after even the coaches.
Yes, they've meant a lot to the women's national team over the years--but this was not their tournament. This tournament belonged to Lloyd, Solo, Johnston, Sauerbrun, Rapinoe, and several others that played way more.

A flock of flirting flamingos is pure, passionate, pink pandemonium-a frenetic flamingle-mangle-a discordant discotheque of delirious dancing, flamboyant feathers, and flamingo lingo.
Well, we got to watch the last 10 minutes of play. We could see that the heart had gone out of Japan, but they still played with honor, knowing they could not win.

They were down 4-1, and then scored a goal in the 58th minute to pull themselves back in the game, but the USA struck back just a couple of minutes later to make it 5-2 and it was over from that point.

It's their last WC and the team elected them to hoist the trophy, that's why they went last.

I know. I watched it. I just thought it was a bit silly given their contributions to this particular trophy.
