AUSTIN, Texas, July 6 (Reuters) - A 3-year-old Texas boy who shot himself at a Houston-area home over the weekend died on Monday from the wound, officials said.

The boy's grandparents were babysitting him and had put him down for a nap. They later heard a gunshot and found the boy had shot himself, police said.

"When they went in to check on him, he had apparently located a .380 semiautomatic pistol that was in the bedroom and had apparently accidentally shot himself in the head," Sergeant Ben Beall of the Harris County Sheriff's Office was quoted as saying by broadcaster KHOU.

A grand jury will investigate the case that took place in Spring, north of Houston, to see if anyone will face charges over the incident.

We need to stop labeling these things as mere accidents. If you own a gun, you are responsible to make sure your gun is safely secured.

That poor baby.

Those poor grandparents.

The parents.

Sad. All the way around.

Not much.  This was totally on the grand parents.

Hell, they didn't even have to store it properly!  Put it on the top shelf of a kitchen cabinet, on top of the mantle.  Don't keep it within reach of a child that is alone in the room!

Exactly.  The gun wasn't what killed the kid.  The grand parents stupidity did.  Would they leave an open bottle of poison on the floor for the kid to drink?  Seriously, be responsible.

EVERY gun in a home should have a trigger lock in place.

Can you imagine how the grandparents feel right now?  I've made some very stupid mistakes during my life, and I thank God that what could have happened, didn't. cry

It's hard to believe that the gun could even have been on safe for a three year old to operate it.

I hope they feel terrible.  It's insane to leave a loaded gun ANYWHERE a three year old can get it.

I guess call me cold--but yeah, they need to feel bad for awhile.  I wish to God that this had never happened, a little kid is dead and it will tear this family apart, but at the end of the day, it's their fault.  Period.

I hope someday they can find some peace, but right now, there is a little boy who died due to their negligence and he needs a voice.  Society has to speak for him.

We need to start prosecuting people who leave loaded firearms in reach of children who then use those firearms. Let's quit giving them a pass because they are grieving or because they are punishing themselves. They have been criminally negligent. Let's start charging them as such.

I agree.  I know the grand parents are suffering but if this child were someone elses child we would be asking for charges to be pressed.

Yes, they should be prosecuted. That's criminal negligence. Make an example of gun-owners who don't take it seriously enough.

Leaving a loaded gun within reach of a 3-year-old? People that irresponsible should not be able to own guns.

The prosecutors in these cases are most likely too chicken to take the heat for it. But they need to punish the people who commit these crimes. This is criminally negligent behavior. How idiotic. I am sorry their grand child died. I am even more sorry their grandchild had such negligent grandparents.

It's no different than the fools who leave their kids in a hot car.

Everybody feels so sorry for them. They didn't "mean" to do it. It was an accident.

Yeah, an accident that was a direct result of their negligent actions.

Again, this isn't some mother who turns her back for a second and her child chases a ball into the street and gets run over.

They KNEW the gun was where a kid could get it. They KNEW it was loaded. They KNEW it was in the damn room where the kid was sleeping.

I know people will say things like "well, they forgot", or "they didn't think about it". DUH!!! That's obviously what happened--and it's also what CAN'T happen.

I'm not saying this as someone who hates guns or has never been around them. He!!, there's a 12 gauge beside my bed right now--but you can't leave a loaded gun where a small child can get it and not watch them. You just can't--and if you do, there needs to be consequences.

I agree with all of this.

And Husker - it's going to be time to put that gun away soon.  Grandbabies grow up and quick as a blink!

It is heartbreaking that this child died. But it was the negligence of the grandparents that caused it. They do need to be charged with child endangerment. It was so easily preventable if only they had stopped to think for one minute. Take the gun & put it on the top shelf of the closet or wherever he can't reach it then put kid down for his nap.

Kids are climbers. I wouldn't trust that spot either. Unload, check it twice, and lock it up somewhere like a gun safe or something similar. Lock the bullets up in a separate place needing a separate key.

You know, I grew up in a house with a riffle and a shot gun propped up in the corner of the closet. Shells and ammo on the chest of drawers right beside the closet.

We never dreamed of touching them unless we were either told to or needed them for protection.

Yes, even as toddlers.

My kids grew up the same way.

Every single person I know and their kids too.

This was a terrible accident. One that happened out of curiosity.

I'll have to take your word on that.  I've never raised a three year old.

I grew up the same way Lily.  But having been taught respect & safety from a very young age.  We would never have dreamed of touching the guns either.  My brother had his own guns that he used for hunting but he never played with them.  I remember helping my dad reload shotgun shells when I was in elementary school but only he was allowed to touch the powder.

We never had guns in the house. DS2 does & I asked him...the clip is ejected & the gun is put in a locked safe on the top shelf of the closet.

Leaving guns where children can get to them is not responsible, imo.
