This is the dramatic moment a slingshot ride's cord snapped seconds before two thrillseekers were to be catapulted into the air.

Footage shows a teenage boy and family friend being strapped in place before one of the bungee cords snaps and is whipped towards the ground, narrowly missing the boy, at a Wisconsin Dells theme park.

Spectators, including the person who is recording the footage, gasp and react with horror as they realise the potential danger the pair faced had the ride, called The Catapult, been sent into the air.

As they remove their shoes and are strapped into place by workers, the pair - 13-year-old Trevor Larson and Carrie Sueker - joke with onlookers, including a man who shouts: 'I'll pray for you. The ropes are looking a little frayed.'

They hold on tight, but moments before take-off one of the large ropes that connects the metal cage to the bungee breaks under the tension.

No one is hurt as it snaps back towards the ground at high speed and luckily for everyone involved, the incident occurred before the operator hit a button to send the duo into the air.

Trevor said there was a 'four-inch deep hole' after the cable hit the concrete, telling WISN: 'It was extremely loud. I didn't really know what was happening. It was a split second. That's how fast it came down.'

Carrie added: 'We could tell from the expressions on our friends’ faces, friends’ and families’ faces that something had gone terribly wrong.'

Trevor's father, Dru, was recording the pair when the cable snapped.

The Mt Olympus Theme Park & Water Park has closed the ride while an investigation takes place.

Owner Nick Laskaris told WISN this type of incident has never happened before at the theme park.

He added: 'It's unfortunate. Mechanical failures unfortunately do happen.'

"Mechanical failures unfortunately do happen"

Not as likely if proper maintenance is done.

A few more seconds and their lives would have changed forever, or been over.

Not necessarily. That's a roll cage. If built of the right stuff, it is extremely strong.

The restraint system of those "rides" are amazing. Five point body harness, legs and ankles as well. Some have head restraints to keep the head from whipping around.

Not saying they wouldn't be in a world of hurt, but they could survive.

Of course I would NEVER try it. I think people who do this are crazy.
