I read that this guy fired from his vehicle. How would having armed guys inside a building prevent what was more or less a drive by shooting?
Just asking.
can remember when the bases around here ( SA and Austin-Bergstrom ) were patrolled and guarded by MPs--they were armed--sort of expected on a military base
looking at that photo, appears to be rounds from a shotgun--in any case, had the base been guarded or the staff been armed ( or both ) the perpetrator likely would have died on the spot--there may have been casualties true but would be willing to venture that there would have been fewer hurt/killed if the staff had been armed
in the ft hood incident, but for the valor and cool-headedness of a female police officer ( with the chutzpah to draw her weapon, under fire, and drop the bastard ), that particular sob would have shot quite a few more people--how ridiculous that local police have to defend and protect a US military base

Wrong. He did so at the first place where NO ONE was even killed or injured. At the place where he killed the marines, he drove through an empty checkpoin, got out of the car, walked in, and shot 4 people.
besides that, you don't know. Had the guys at the first place been able to return Fire, they might have got him, disabled his vehicle, or made him give up on the project.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
The scum was shot and killed by a police officer with an assault riffle.
That area was locked down like a prison yard within minutes.
In this area, the Tristan area I live in, when some thing this happens, a mass notification goes out to ever public building and they lock them down.
Malls, school, stores, government buildings. Anything.
And all law enforcement goes into attack.
Our interstate, the off ramps, we're closed. That scum wasn't getting away.

I don't think it is something new that not all soldiers are armed at all times though. A recruitment office is very office like with lots of brochures and paperwork, often they are located in strip malls.
I grew up on military bases and i only recall seeing the MPs with sidearms and a few times during Desert Storm they had troops in BDU's with M-16s patrolling the base and standing on top of the PX and other buildings on post.
Most military people are not armed most of the time unless they are deployed or something.

The only soldiers who carry firearms are the ones in active combat or the military police on any base. On regular old every day bases no soldiers anywhere are armed.

I feel really badly for those men's families.
So what? Before blowjob Bill changed it--they could be armed.

They are soft and wanted targets. To post a no firearms sign on the door was liberal stupidity at it finest. Of course these terrorists are going to target people that can't fight back.
