Ouch.

How many pictures in the package?

We had a lot of choice with our kids. I don't remember spending that much.

Yes. Package size determines how many.

And this is on top of the $60 sitting fee.

Cap and gown pictures will be sold in a different package. Even though they were taken at the same time.

Sounds like a racket. They know every parent that can possibly afford it will pay for it because HS graduation is milestone.

It's definitely a racket and unfortunately, it's a normal price.

If we didn't use the "school approved" studio, out kids' pictures would not be in the yearbook. We could have gone somewhere else and pay another sitting fee and all that, but the cost came out about the same by the time you paid for 2 sitting fees (one with the approved studio, one for the one that you chose), but then we wouldn't have cap and gown pics and yada yada yada.

It's total bullschitt how much of a racket this is...

Still have to purchase announcements, cap and gown, diploma, and I can't remember what else.

You have to purchase the diploma? I'm pretty sure that at least was free.

Yep. I think with pictures, cap and gown, tassel, class ring, announcements, diploma, all that stuff, we spent about $1500 per child on graduation...

When I graduated, you know back when dirt was new, it was $25 for the diploma, cap, gown and tassel.

You can't get just the tassel for $25 now.

I remember getting my senior pictures done. They cost more than my car. I thought it was odd that my parents happily (well, maybe not too happily) paid for those but I had to buy my own car.

Check with a local photographer, or a photo place in a department store. You might get the same things for 1/4 as much money.

They usually don't have the tux/drape nor will they have the cap and gown and tassel.  They can do candid shots, but they can't do the formals...

And the picture won't be in the yearbook.

Why not? They already had to pay for the sitting, and someone picks out one picture of him for the yearbook.

Whether they buy the package or not.

I think a LOT of people don't buy those photo packages, just like a lot of people don't buy a class ring.

Because the Yearbook committee is made up of students and maybe one Teacher advisor.  The photog makes it easy for them to put a year book together with the deal that senior picture go in only if the photog takes the pic.

I thought the photog already took the pictures, and gave the parent(s) pictures to choose from, along with the"deal" offering".

At that point, there are pictures. And no obligation to spend hundreds of dollars that some people just can't spare.

I would KILL for a $60 sitting fee. The place where DD is getting her pics taken, the sitting fee is $350. And that's what it was in 2009 when her sister graduated.

But we can choose any photographer we want. The only specification for the yearbook is that the pic the photog submits has to be a certain size.

Jeepers that's expensive!

I don't remember my senior pics having any fees associated with them unless you wanted to purchase the pics. Our pics were done at school on picture day.

Graduation is almost as big of an industry as weddings now.

I graduated when dirt was new, too, so I have no experience in this. But it appears I'd better start saving. Now.

Gosh FNW, if it keeps going up like has, by the time your boys graduate, you'll need a second mortgage to cover it all.

I think it's become ridiculous. The cost of everything.

It really depends on how many pics you want. I have a lot of extended family and I wanted/needed about 20 pics size 5x7 and up. The total cost for just the photos, not the sitting fee, was well over $1000. But don't tell DH. Every time I went to the studio I gave them $300. Going to view the pics? Take a check for $300. It was a running joke with me and DD.

Yep. I had to pay $300 for the proof book. It was applied to my order though.
