A nine-year-old bat boy who was fighting for his life in intensive care after he was accidentally hit in the head by an adult baseball player's swinging bat on Saturday afternoon has now passed away.

Kaiser Carlile, who volunteered for the Kansas team, the Liberal Bee Jays, was critically injured when he was hit during a warmup swing at a National Baseball Congress World Series game.

He was rushed to a hospital in Wichita, where he underwent emergency treatment and was placed in intensive care. But now, more than 24 hours on, the youngster has succumbed to his injuries

'With the permission of the family, and with much sorrow and a very broken heart, I regretfully inform everyone that Kaiser Carlile passed away earlier this evening,' the amateur Bee Jays told CNN in a statement on Sunday night. 'Please keep his family and our team in your thoughts and prayers.'

According to KSN, Kaiser - who is the son of a cousin of Bee Jays general manager Mike Carlile - was was hit by a player taking practice swings during the game against the San Diego Waves.

He was running to retrieve a bat at the time, it is reported.

Witness Jim Parks told the station the boy took the full force of the bat to the head

'He (the player) was swinging, and it hit him (Kaiser) in the helmet, knocked him down. He got back up, but he went right back down again,' said Parks.

The player involved in the accident at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium has not been identified.

According to McCaffrey, umpire Mark Goldfeder responded immediately and carried out first aid.

An EMT crew was already at the stadium treating a woman suffering from dizzy spells.

Kaiser was then rushed by ambulance to the ICU at Via Christi St. Francis hospital.

Players from both teams knelt in circles in prayer when it became clear the injury was serious. They decided to continue the game, and Liberal rallied in 13 innings to defeat San Diego 13-5.

On Saturday evening, Nathan McCaffrey, president of The Liberal Bee Jays, wrote on Facebook: 'As most already know, our 9 year old precious batboy, Kaiser Carlile, was accidentally struck by a bat during the game against the San Diego Waves this afternoon. Kaiser was wearing a helmet. He has been our bat boy for most of the games this summer. He was a part of the team.'

Speaking to CNN, McCaffrey said he heard the bat strike Kaiser's helmet - then saw him fall back.

Wearing a helmet is mandatory during the World Series, an NBC spokesman told The Wichita Eagle.

On Sunday morning, at 10.20am, the Bee Jays posted an update on Facebook, saying, 'Hey fans, the situation with Kaiser this morning is very much the same as it was last night: Still in critical condition, but hanging in there. Thank you everyone for all your kind words, thoughts and prayers!'

Witness Jim Parks (pictured) said: 'It hit him in the helmet, knocked him down. He got back up, but he went right back down again'

It was followed by a message from Liberal Mayor Joe Denoyer, who said: 'I would like to assure the Liberal Bee Jays, that the thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with Kaiser, his family, the Liberal Bee Jay player, his family, and the Bee Jay team as we tearfully try to cope with this tragic accident.

'Just as Kaiser has been an inspiration to all those around him, we pray for a miracle, we pray for healing, for a peace of mind, and pray that as a community, we can be an inspiration to all those dealing with this difficult situation.'

There was also an outpouring of support for Kaiser on social media.

McCaffrey said: 'We appreciate everyone's love, support, thoughts and prayers during this time. Please continue to pray and keep Kaiser and his family in your thoughts...and prayers.'

Nine, not 5.

This is a tragedy, but I think proves my point from last week. Just because a tragedy occurred does not mean his parents were "wrong", or made a "bad" decision here. The kid was probably having the time of his life this summer. There was NO WAY to predict this scenario. Sometimes bad things happen. You can't life your life in a bubble.

The article says he was 9.

Still very sad.

Even with proper equipment, accidents happen.

I bet the one who hit him feels horrible.

Sad all around.

Why wasn't he playing on his own team?

He was 9. Every 9 yr old I know is playing on their own team.

Not saying anything bad.

Just thinking.

He might have been on his own team, too. He might have been doing both.

He might have been--but he was a batboy for an adult, semi-pro team.

Baseball is over here.  The last tournament is the week of the 4th of July.  They will start fall ball later this month.

His poor mother.  God love her...

We are still having games across the road.

My cousin just got back from softball National Championships.

Here it isn't "do you play" it's "who do you play for".

I saw this on the news. This was extremely sad. It's little comfort to his parent's, but he's with God now.

I wonder how many parents and coaches specifically tell all the kids that they HAVE TO leave a zone around EVERY person carrying a bat.

I know I never told that to my kids.

You never told your kids that?   But, you are right, there are probably coaches who don't tell kids that.

There are no "bat boys" here for local teams. If the bat is dropped, the catcher gives it a toss out of the batting box towards the bench. And, the next batter usually retrieves it.

Bat boys here are a big thing.  They have a different one every game.  It's an honor.  They announce your name and you get a jersey with your name on it.  The kids are nominated by their coaches and are picked based on performance at their games...

This was an accident.

Nothing more.
