So, Welts made me curious about the Canadian prime minister and I went reading. Seems he's not very popular, but this stood out to me -
"If there is one area in which Harper is particularly vulnerable, it’s the charge that he runs one of the most undemocratic regimes in Canadian history – and has undermined and abused democratic institutions and procedures at every turn. In fact, he is the only Canadian prime minister to be found in contempt of Parliament, which occurred in 2011 after his government refused to release costs on certain programs to opposition MPs."
THAT just reminds me so much of Obama and it's one of the reasons conservatives hate Obama, which I find interesting b/c it's one of the reasons liberals in Canada dislike Harper. I guess it just depends on what they are abusing their power to accomplish.
So - I'm just curious. And let's avoid the Canada bashing, please. If you can't discuss Canada without insulting all its citizens, please don't join the discussion.

I love Canada and the people are the most polite and helpful. I just don't appreciate that Welts comes here and lumps all Americans into one category. There's not a single country in this world where ALL the people do and feel the same things about any subject. I guess if it makes her feel superior she can have at it. I for one am proud to be an American and wouldn't want to be any other nationality.

I've been posting with Weltz on another board for years. She is a very interesting lady. Her politics probably don't mesh well with the majority on this board though.
Sigh. Welts isn't even on this thread, yet, so ....REALLY people? I really want her input on the topic, and you are going to turn this into a fight before it can actually be discussed.
Banning -
I rarely ban people. I've only perma-banned 3 people from this board, and I'm pretty sure everyone knows who those 3 people are. I'm a free speech kind of gal for the most part. There also seems to be some misperceptions about who is actually banned from this board. There is one person in particular who keeps saying she is banned, and unless she's the one that signed in as incognito and got her IP banned (And I'm not saying it was her b/c I've always had other suspicians) - I am unaware of that particular ban and she would be welcome here. And the nonsense about me banning liberals is just that - nonsense. The ones that are gone tend to leave on their own in a huff.

THat's good to know. Based on what she's posted here and what she's saying about us on the other board, I was beginning to think she was trolling, but apparently I misjudged.
love Canada--absolutely beautiful countryside--especially BC, the Canadian Rockies, etc. --pristine and EMPTY--have always admired how they care for their public lands--their politics, must admit, are somewhat incomprehensible to me but then do not have the experience of living in the country for a long period of time--when comparing the efficacy / logistics of various systems with theirs is useful to remember the huge disparity in our respective populations--35 to 40 million Canadians to our 300 million plus

Totally agree...
All of the Canadians I know do not like their PM either, but neither do they like Obama. I would also be curious to know why the lovefest for him when he is guilty of doing the same things as their PM. Also, I would like to know why they care about our leaders? Because I couldn't even name one of theirs. Why do they meddle in our politics?
This is asked with sincere inquisition. I can't get this answer from any of my Canadian friends...

I really dislike Harper, even though I voted for him many years ago. It's not just what you mentioned, but his anti-environmental stances are repugnant to me. He's fired many environmental scientists, muzzled them, and denied them access to their own research. He thinks it's fine to build oil-shipping ports in marine breeding grounds of endangered species. He's sold too much of our country to foreign interests.

Thank you, Lexxy. Yeah, my political stances are diametrically opposed to those of most people on this board. I didn't come here expecting to be liked.
I did join a very, very liberal board (Democratic Undergound), but it just wasn't interesting to me, because everyone was high-fiving each other and slapping each other on the back. There was virtually no debate or discourse.
I, too, like political discourse--but it's going to get heated at times. If you are going to be a whiner about that, then such threads are not for you.

This is what bothers me so much about this board. People act all innocent like they don't do anything wrong but Weltz hadn't even posted and people already started in. You can't have a debate. At least it seems like people don't want one.

That was actually kind of obvious. But you also seemed to come in with pre-existing opinons about other members.

yeah, I think that Harper would fall into the Republican category as well. He's an a$$. I'm not sure that this next election will be any better though.
Well, I don't know how a Republican gets elected there and such an extreme liberal here. Can we trade you all our liberals for your conservatives? I think that would work best.

Harper is not a Republican. We don't have a Republican Party. He's a Progressive Conservative.
I'd vote for the Rhinoceros Party before I'd vote for Harper again. They're gathering forces with this upcoming election. They got quite a few votes last time.

Last time, they declared war on Belgium. Belgium responded by sending them cases of Belgian beer and mussels.

This upcoming election is going to be a disaster. With a choice between Harper and Justin Trudeau we're not left with much. I think that Justin is closer to Obama when it comes to playing around in office. I voted Green in the last BC election because even though I knew they had no chance of winning it was better than voting for Christy Clark or whoever was running NDP. Of course, Clark won and now we're dealing with LNG and Yoga on the Bridge on Aboriginals Day. It's a bloody joke.

Canada is a large country and you can't really dump all Canadians into one category either. Just the same, one person does not represent all of Canada. Keep that in mind.
I am happy to have grown up a Canadian, I also am extremely happy to have such wonderful neighbors. One thing that I have found is that the internet and message boards like this one have let me get to know my American neighbors even better.
The most notable thing to me is the vast difference from north to south and between political parties there is a very distinct polarization.

It's a choice between Harper and Mulcair.
Except here in BC where Trudeau is the lead. Heaven knows why. We tried Clark and that was an epic fail. You'd think we'd learn. I need to know more about Mulcair, however. He hasn't got much of a presence out here.
