I realize most here don't have tiny babies. But this is the new thing with babies and I do realize we have some mom with younger kids. I also thought weltz might know a thing or two about them. Apparently they're the newest fad here. I read a huge article about them yesterday. Some countries are banning them now. They are a string of beads made out of amber that you put on your babies wrist or ankle. The way it works, supposedly, is that the bead gets warm and sends signals to the brain to be pain free. Some babies have choked on them. I can find the article if everyone wants to discuss this.

I know a thing or two about amber. For instance, there's a LOT of fake amber out there. Most of it is plastic or resin. To check if it's real, put a tiny scrap of paper on the table. Rub the amber on your head, building up a current. Touch the amber to the paper, If the amber picks the paper up, it's real. If it doesn't, it's plastic. As far as the bead getting warm and sending signals to the brain...I don't believe in that woo. It definitely sounds like a choking hazard.
To me, it's in the same category as detoxifying foot patches or those magic pendants that make water "alive".

I've seen those teething necklaces for babies, too, that moms are supposed to wear, but I've never understood the wisdom of trusting choking-sized beads in a babies mouth to chew on secured only by whatever is stringing the necklace, etc.

Thanks weltz! Around here all the moms are doing amber teething necklaces. They claim it cures everything from colic to the flu to teething. I didn't know much about it but it sounded like a woo to me so I read up on it. A doctor in the US has spoken out about it. Apparently, Spain, France, and one other country I can't remember have completely banned them. Other countries are working on it.
The doctor did say it leeched out a TINY bit of chemical into the skin. Not enough to do anything or be dangerous. He said he found it strange that all these mothers who don't want medical chemicals going into their baby are so willing to put other natural chemicals into them. He also pointed out that some of the most potent and dangerous chemicals out there are natural derivatives.

No, the moms don't wear them. You are supposed to wrap them around your babies wrist or ankle and hope they don't get it loose and chew on it.

These things are all the rage in some of the mommy groups I'm on. They recommend getting the bracelet one and putting it around baby's ankle. I never got one and I don't buy into this kind of stuff.
DS gets cranky when he's teething but mostly takes it in stride. So far, his molars were the only teeth that really bothered him when they came in. I've heard the canines are supposed to hurt real bad too.

The new research shows, I know you're going to be shocked here, that the old fashioned methods worked best. Doctors don't recommend Orajel anymore because they are seeing a whole new set of problems with babies being overdosed on it. Same thing with Tylenol. They say the pain is so intermittent that it really isn't effective at relieving pain. They recommend frozen teething things and cold wet rags to chew on. Who would have known that us old people actually knew what the hell we were doing?

Amber does contain succinic acid, but certainly not enough to get absorbed through the skin or block pain pathways. It's also a precursor to acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. Why would you eschew PROVABLE analgesics and use this? There's virtually no evidence that it works.
"No I don't give my child real medicine. I prefer an unprovable aspirin precursor."
Use teething rings from the freezer. Cold most definitely works against inflammation.

BOLD Thank you! I couldn't remember the name of what was in it. My short term memory sucks! I do remember that he said it had some in it.
Underlined He was what iffing this part. So what IF it had enough of it in there to help. Which leads to...
Italics He was saying it was dumb to throw away modern proved medicine to use something that had no research behind it.
Interesting article. I've seen an upswing in these things. They sell for about $40.

Hahahaha... In the comments a doctor wrote in and said he recommended whiskey for his patients. He had the exact milliliters measured out. He recommended giving one dose, moving the child, and if the crying didn't stop, giving the second dose. He said general the more does you give and the further you move from the irritant the better results you'll get! It was hysterical.

Apparently, if you drink booze out of an amethyst goblet, you won't get a hangover. Any takers willing to experiment? I don't drink.
I don't really drink either. Every once in a blue moon. Never been drunk. I don't think I'm a good candidate for this experiment.

Oh. Thank God. I thought this was going to be a thread saying how awesome these things are.
No. I don't believe in them. Because science. I can't believe how crazy this fad has gotten.
It doesn't 'melt' with the kid's body temperature, and if it did, it doesn't absorb through the skin. If it somehow did, it wouldn't be enough to help (and why would you want your child absorbing an unregulated dose of a chemical day in and day out?). It might work better if you have your kid eat the entire necklace in one sitting.
What we do know is that babies and small children shouldn't wear necklaces because of the choking hazard- No, I don't believe for a second that everyone who uses these takes them off every time their kids are asleep or out of their eyesight. Also, if it breaks, it's lots of small choking hazards. The risk seems far greater than the very small and very doubtful benefit.
And because Weltz said it so well, I'm going to repeat it:
Amber does contain succinic acid, but certainly not enough to get absorbed through the skin or block pain pathways. It's also a precursor to acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. I read this mom page for my town. It's not for new moms. It's for all moms. And really there is a lot of stuff that's wonderful on it. People post about free events for the community or sales or all kinds of really really great info. There was one woman who was starting a crocheting class that I wanted to go to. So I don't want to "unfriend" myself from the site. Unfortunately, you have all these younger moms who believe in the latest fads.
I think the hardest part for me is learning to keep my damn mouth shut. The people around here rush their kids to the ER for the slightest temperature. I'm not kidding. They don't call their on call doc. They don't wait till morning. Slightest fever and they are in the ER. It drives me absolutely nuts. I often want to make a comment but I usually refrain and give the advice to call the on call doc. So frustrating.

Oh, I know. I'm a member of all the 'mom' groups in my town. So many moms believe in their effectiveness, you can't say a word against them without being ganged up on.
I'll stick with Tylenol and baby oragel and cold teething rings.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but many moms still believe that sugar causes hyperactivity in toddlers. It doesn't.
And when giving your kid a dose of Tylenol for teething, rub some directly on the gums. It absorbs into the mouth and blood stream faster and starts helping ease the pain quicker.

I'm going to disagree with you there. I know that's the new "thing", but my experience says otherwise. With my kids AND with my husband. If that man eats anything sugary after 4:00 (YES 4:00), I'm in for a long night.

I prefer Motrin as soon as they are old enough for it at six months. I don't notice much difference when I give them Tylenol.
That works too.

When DD11 was about 3, she was really, really thirsty one day and the only thing available nearby was a soda vending machine. I chose what I thought was the least horrible choice - orange Crush. That was at about 5:30. I'm not exagerating when I tell you my kid was bouncing off the walls until 11:00 at night.

People are over dosing their babies on Tylenol these days. Like any other medicine it is good but can be abused when people give it for anything and everything.

Is sugar GOOD for kids? Absolutely not. There are a host of problems with consuming sugar. However, the idea that sugar makes kids wild or wired is untrue.
I gave my kids watered down coke at an early age. 1 part coke to 3 parts water and shaken till it didn't fizz.
Flame me. They lived, I lived. Life goes on.
Did you know if you have motion sickness, you can ease it with a coke that has had all the fizz shook out?

Even time tested medicines can be abused. And IMO some holistic medicines really do work. Life is about balance.

Same here.
Well, cold medicines all simply relieve the sypmtoms of a cold - for everyone, even an adult. They don't cure it or shorten it. So, the FDA says kids under 6 don't need cold medicine b/c it doesn't do anything to cure the cold. Well, duh. BUT, just like it does others, it does relieve the symptoms - which allows kids to rest better, which allows them to get better faster. Sleep is the best thing for a cold, and cold medicine relieves symptoms so that you can sleep. Therefore, they DO have a benefit.

Oh I see. I thought it was banned because parents kept overdosing their kids on cold medicine. But I think this reason probably sounds more legit. Even if it's not true.
Uh-huh. Just like cold medicine has no benefit for kids, either.
Can you explain? I'm not sure what you are trying to say here and I don't want to assume!
Well, I think that is why, too, but the reason they gave is that it does not do anything except relieve symptoms.
Of course, doctors still tell you to use it when it is needed. And without directions, people are now more likely to overdose thier kid, IMO.

The reasons the FDA gave, which still apply, are
*** There has been NO TESTING to determine safety or efficacy or appropriate dosage, done involving CHILDREN. In fact. all the clinical testing was done on adult MEN. No women were included either.
*** The "recommended dosages" for children and for women were GUESSES.
*** The potential side effects for use with children (and women) were and still are GUESSES.
Personally, as much as I did appreciate having liquid Sudafed and Actifed to use with my kids, I seriously agree with the FDA that relying on guesses is a bad thing.

Did your kids do just fine using those things? Mine did.
Again, why would anyone not use time tested medicines to help their kid?

No, there were actually a bunch of cases where stupid parents thought that if one teaspoon of cold medicine made their child feel better than two teaspoons should make them feel even better than that. Kids were being overdosed by dumb parents. It DOES relieve the symptoms only of the cold. And it works super great if you give them enough to kill them. They won't fuss a bit after that.

So a responsible parent shouldn't use those products because a few stupid parents did?

Responsible parents should be able to do a lot of things. It's the stupid parents that make life hard for the good ones. I know people who give Tylenol for EVERYTHING. Kid is tired? Tylenol. Kid is fussy. Tylenol. Kid is crying? Tylenol. Kid looks different than normal? Tylenol.

It works when they are fussy and tired and crying.
The kid can't tell you if something is wrong. At the end of the day, it can help relieve any pain from being carried, put in and out of car seats, buggies, high chairs, riding hips and just being handled.
As long as the directions are followed, it won't hurt them at all.

It can. They could build up a resistance to it then it won't be effective when they really do need it.
If a child is in pain from being carried, put in and out of car seats, buggies, high chairs, or being on your hip or being handled you are doing something wrong as a parent. Either that or there's something wrong with your child. None of those activities should cause pain to any normal child.
