DS is having a new fence installed right now. He asked me how much to tip the guys.

What do you think? How would you decide?

I gave the cable guy $20 on Monday. Fixed my laptop, installed 2 phones. Was so helpful he deserved it!

I don't think I would tip them. It doesn't occur to me to tip if I am hiring people for a service.

This is me.  Tipping is getting out of control.

I'd have left a cooler with waters and soda.

I did that for the guys who built my deck.  No soda but water & Gatorade.  I also got them a fruit tray on one day.  It was hotter than usual that week.

He just texted, "Above and beyond is a given now. They are digging post holes and finding concrete. Just found a defunct metal pipe. "

So, does "above and beyond" mean they are going to charge more on the bill?

Then they should charge him extra.   When giving quotes, you quote out what it will cost for the labor you anticipate.  If something else comes up and need to be done, they need to talk about that.  It's very common to run into unexpected stuff.

Example...

My contractor said it would be $1500 for the labor to redo my kitchen.  Then he ran into wiring and plumbing problems that could not be foreseen.  So his "quote" had to be adjusted for that.

I have tipped nadda. The amount I'm paying, they should be tipping me. I would bring refreshments, but they come with their own. I don't complain when they splash pool water on themselves to cool off.

I've watched so much Love it or List it and Property Brothers that I would just assume plumbing and eletrical is screwed up everywhere and budget accordingly.

I agree no need for a tip, and yes refreshments if needed, but no more.

The concrete chunks and pipe were part of the house that was torn down before their new one was built.

No tipping.

They have their labor figured in to the price.

We just had some wiring re-done in the old house basement b/c the previous owners had done it themselves and it was not done to code.  With renters going in there - we thought it best to fix it.

We usually tip people doing big laborious jobs for us with a case of beer at the end of the job. It's always gone over quite well.

No tip. For what? Didn't you agree on an installation price?
