Nothing is wrong with me. Half hour is not long. And my first question for the boy would be why he was taken from inside eating to outside in the car.

Could the dad see the car from inside? Was the car ventilated? I'm not going to join the witch hunt with just the provided information.

The police charged them. It is illegal to leave a child that young alone in a vehicle. And the father did it to finish his DATE. The boy was frightened and crying.

There is NO situation where it is ok to leave a child that young alone in a car. In Georgia. In the summer. Two reasons - either you have to leave the car running to keep it cool, which is completely dangerous, or you are leaving a kid to swelter, or you are leaving the kid in an open car on the street (which still gets very hot, btw).

NONE of those are acceptable parenting choices. Not a single one.

And in answer to your "need more information" - the car was parked more than a block away and it was more than a half hour.

Also - the dad called the mom and threatened to kill her for calling the cops, while the boy listened.

For more than 30 minutes, a 6-year-old boy was alone in the car while his father and his girlfriend finished dinner in an Alpharetta restaurant, according to a police report released Monday.

Scared and sobbing, the boy called his mom to say he was alone inside his father’s car in an unfamiliar parking lot, the report states. The boy’s mother called 911, and a dispatcher in turn called the boy, who wasn’t injured. While the boy was on the phone, his father returned to the car, according to police.

The dispatcher called back the boy’s father, Aric Keck, but Keck allegedly hung up the first time before telling the dispatcher he only left the child alone to go to the restroom, the police report states. Keck then allegedly called his ex-wife and threatened to kill her for calling the police as his girlfriend and son listened, according to police.

The boy, who was with his father during visitation, had been in the restaurant on July 18 with Keck and Jacqueline Tabb. When he got tired, the two walked him back to the car, parked more than a block away, according to police.

“Mom, we’re at the Tona Grill,” the boy told his mom.

The restaurant was later determined to be the Kona Grill on Avalon Boulevard in Alpharetta. And thanks to the boy’s ability to tell his mom the names of streets where the car had been parked, investigators were able to piece together what happened with help from surveillance cameras in the area.

At 9:32 p.m., Tabb is seen on restaurant video leading the boy out of the restaurant, police said. The couple then returns to the restaurant minutes later and remains there until 10:15 p.m., according to police.

Police charged both Keck, 51, and Tabb, 26, with reckless conduct, and both surrendered Aug. 10.

That poor little boy. I bet he was real scared. It is never ok to leave a child that young alone in the car for whatever reason. Heat could have got to him, he could have been kidnapped. I'm glad the little boy had the good sense to call his mommy.

Nor is it an appropriate punishment for misbehaving as someone upthread indicated would be a valid excuse. If the child was misbehaving, all parties could have taken their dinners to go and left together.

Exactly. You don't put your date night ahead of your child. And I imagine if he was misbehaving it was because he was bored & tired.

I will also say that I don't know ANY "every other weekend" dads that go on dates when they have their kids. They get 4 nights a month. Why to they have to go out on one of those nights?

Exactly! This poor excuse of a father couldn't schedule a date on 26 other days of the month. Instead he had to drag his six year old out at ten pm. No wonder the child was misbehaving. Maybe the people that think it's okay to put a six year old in a hot car should be locked in a hot car themselves.

But that punishes the parents, not the child.

We don't even know that was the case, however. His "misbehavior", if any, might have just been being inconveniently in the way of his dad pursuing tail.

It was a bad decision on his part no matter what. He is not part of a "united front" of two parents. Chances are, they've undoubtedly had some prior disagreements about custody/visitation.

This gives her a LOT of ammunition to use against him. Very poor judgment.

In this case, yes--but not in all cases. Letting one kid pout in the car while everyone else is in having a good time can be an effective punishment. I've seen it used lots of times.

Would I recommend using it at the parking lot at Disneyland on a 95 degree day? Of course not--but a 50 degree day in the driveway at Grandma's, you bet.

Too bad this didn't happen in NJ. The NJ Supreme Court just ruled that it's not illegal to leave your baby in car while you go inside to shop.

Yep. They just ruled that you can leave your infant, like newborn, in the car alone while you go in shopping as long as you "use good judgment".

The summary of it said that if it's not earth shatteringly hot, if you roll the windows down, and if you "aren't gone very long" (whatever that means) you are free to leave your child in your car. It is not illegal. Just use good judgment. It came about because a lady left her infant in a car and went in and went shopping. It was 60 that day and she rolled down the window. Her reasoning was was the ten month old was asleep and needed to stay asleep and she wouldn't be shopping very long. Someone called the police, CPS came and took the baby, and when she came out the baby was gone and the police arrested her for child abuse. she had three other kids and CPS took them too. She did get them all back but she had to take it to the Supreme Court. All the lower courts ruled against her. I think they said she was in the store about forty minutes.

Dinner doesn't have to be 5:00 on the dot. You see a movie, then go to dinner. And restaurants wouldn't be open that late if there were no customers.
