MOST HORRIBLE HANDICAPPED PARKING STORY!

Today I had to go get DH's contacts.  Well, it's in a strip mall.  And around the sidewalk are handicapped parking spots.  They are next to the curb so they are parallel parking spots.  There are those diagonal lines in between them so people can pull up and/or unload scooters.  The lines also are in front of the spots where you can go over the curb in a scooter.  Okay, so I needed to explain that.  So there's an elderly woman with a handicapped sticker on her car.  She slides into the spot and pulls forward onto the lines to straighten up and back into the actual handicapped spot.  So as she's pulling forward this young guy in a truck zips into the handicapped spot!  WTF?  He doesn't even park straight.  He just basically cuts off the woman and leaves half of his truck hanging out of the spot because he can't really get into the spot because the woman is already there TRYING to get into it.  Right in front of his truck is a Rent A Center.  He jumps out of the truck with a checkbook in his hand and runs into the store.  The lady is sitting there trying to figure out what to do.  She finally just parks in the crosswalk and struggles to get out.  Then the guy runs out of the Rent A Center with his checkbook still in his hand and jumps in his truck and takes off.  Not a look or a nod to the woman who is struggling.  Yep, we called on him.  They were on their way but he left.  The policeman said he really really really wanted to catch him doing that.

I wouldn't have done that. This might ping my radar as being unkind, but I couldn't muster up enough outrage to actually call the law. Do you think you did a good deed? I suppose you do or you wouldn't have shared this. What were you hoping the outcome would be? Arrest? Apology?

I know. And no, I am not the handicapped parking police. I normally don't look and I don't care. Not my business, not my job. But we were standing on the sidewalk when it happened and we were just so gobsmacked that our jaws dropped and we stood there for a moment. This guy pulled straight past her and cut her off. He saw her. It wasn't an accident or a mistake. It was an azzhole being an azzhole.

The best outcome would be that he got a ticket IMO.  But it really doesn't matter because he left before they got there.  Do I think I did a good deed?  For me it was outrage.  This woman was legally trying to park in a spot and she was struggling.  Then some douche bag comes along and parks illegally.  He wasn't even IN a parking spot.  Most of his truck was out of it.  Yeah, it did piss me off for the lady who needed the spot.

What prompted the outrage?  Do you get outraged anytime you see someone parking illegally?

Nope. Not at all. And like I said I don't really care who uses which parking spot. I don't police it and I don't care. The outrage is I saw a woman who clearly needed the space and had a legitimate tag allowing her to use it. If the kid had already been there it wouldn't have phased me. But he cut her off. He looked right at her, cut her off, and left her to struggle. He had her car pinned in so she couldn't even pull out and go park elsewhere. The utter rudeness of it all on his part is what struck me. And there were able bodied spots not too far away. If he was just jumping out to pay a bill why not just park there and run in and pay. Why cut someone off and be so rude about it?

You called the law because he was rude.

This isn't the most horrible handicapped story.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but in my opinion, you wasted valuable resources by calling the law. You can't sincerely believe the law really really really wanted to catch some rude illegal parker. Surely you can recognize when you're being patronized.

Okay, let's just say she wasn't handicapped. A normal person pulls into a spot and gets ready to park. Some total ass cuts them off, blocks them in, and leaves them stranded that way until he gets done running in to pay a bill? Really? Take away the handicapped and it's still one of the most rude and entitled things a person can do.

I wonder what the police are paid to do? Every single time we have a thread people say there's no reason to call the police. EVER. Why do we even have them then? Seriously. If there's no reason to call them there's no reason to have them. And if there's no reason to have them there's no reason to pay them. And if we're not paying them we can most definitely save a ton of money.

No, in my opinion, it isn't even on the top 100 most rude and entitled things one could do.

We don't call law enforcement because someone is rude and entitled.

Looking back at it, are you comfortable that you chose a reasonable course of action?

Do you think you may have over dramatized a fairly innocuous interaction?  If you did, why do you think you did?

Yes, it was extremely rude and entitled.

He was parked illegally.  You CAN call for that.  It is a legitimate reason.

I am fine with how I acted.

No I do not.  I do not think I over reacted because he had pinned the woman in.  What if she had an emergency and needed to leave?  She couldn't.

I am fine with what I did because even though a lot of people want to move about society MYOB, not caring, and pretending others don't exist it's the small things that matter.  And once you stop caring about small things it's really not that big of a step to stop caring about bigger things.

I worked at a mall through college. They would call the police for handicap parking violations. The police seemed fine with coming. One ticket probably pays the salary for an offices day of work.

I don't see where this is a waste of resources.  The police can choose to go on the call or not.  They chose to go, so apparently they had the time, they probably don't always have the time for parking issues depending on what else is going on, but a lot of towns are extremely serious about enforcing the handicap parking laws and so do want to answer those calls when possible.

I would have called too. The police are paid to enforce our laws. This guy was breaking a law. We have a non emergency line for our PD for things like this to keep 911 lines open for true emergencies.

In my opinion, it's in the top ten.  AND it's illegal.  And you are the one that sounds defensive.  Do you park in handicapped spots when you are not supposed to?  That's the only thing I can think of to explain getting your back up over this.

Maybe I would have let the air out of one of his tires so he'd still be there when the cop arrived to give him a ticket.

I like to think of jerks who are able-bodied and park in handicapped spots as being mentally handicapped.

And to block someone in? He deserved a ticket and a big fine. But he probably wouldn't have learned from it.

A jerk is a jerk.

Too bad no one took phone pictures. Maybe a picture of his license plate plastered all over the Internet might have had some effect.

NO, I wouldn't have really vandalized his car.

Njn, I think you did the right thing. It wasn't just the fact that he parked in a handi- cap spot he deliberately parked there while someone who really needed the spot was struggling to park and blocked her in. A real jerk.

Good morning! Let me explain. Nobody (njn) didn't do anything wrong. Yes the guy did do something wrong. Yes I park in handicapped parking. I have a placard.

My questions stem from curiosity. There have been several times I've witnessed a seemingly able bodied person parked in a hcs. No one has ever called on my behalf. It just seemed dramatic.

What piqued my curiosity was the statement that the leo really really really wanted to catch him. I imagined the leo whipping his hat off, throwing it to the ground and shouting " dagnabbit, I really really really wanted to nab that scoundrel!!"

We did, clearly, establish she was calling due to rude and entitled behavior. That isn't against the law. I am wondering though, what the actual, uh, victim? was doing during this. I also wonder if njn was wearing a cape. A cape would really make this a good story.

Please tell me y'all have a sense of humor.

Have you ever received a speeding ticket?  Do you still speed?

Tickets don't stop rude and entitled behavior.

Tickets aren't known to change behavior.  They are a revenue resource.

My question is why are the handicap parking places parallel parking?

While I am usually able to parallel park, when I have a flare up, it's really difficult.

So what?  At least he'd have to pay something for his behavior, even if he does it again.

Also, speeding isn't necessarily "rude".  It can be if you are driving aggressively, cut someone off, etc...--but in and of itself, it isn't necessarily rude.

I have often wondered why places like that don't have a 15 minute parking space for things like paying a quick bill.

A jerk is a jerk.

Too bad no one took phone pictures. Maybe a picture of his license plate plastered all over the Internet might have had some effect.

NO, I wouldn't have really vandalized his car.

Here is one of a number of sites where one can report drivers:

Good for you, NJN! IVY! I would've done the same thing. What a jerk! I doubt I would've been able to keep my mouth shut though and would've said something. DH would've said something for sure.

When I first read parallel parking and handicap spot, I thought it was going to be a story of people not parking parallel but rather straight in. There's a Walmart near me with some parallel handicap spots and there's always morons parked in them straight in. I told one guy it's a parallel spot and he had an attitude of don't care. Alrighty then, rude jerk! When jerks park improperly in those spots, it prevents people on the other side of the aisle from getting out because the road is more narrow in those areas.

Why didn't you just talk to him? You called the police?

"Excuse me! Sir? Why did you park like that? Did you not see how that poor woman was struggling?"

Because she didnt want to get shot?

I didn't speak to him because the eye doctor's office is in a run down neighborhood. We've been his patient for years. Some of the businesses are closed now. It is not the best area. I don't know how to say it politely without someone accusing me of being a racist so I'll just say it. There are a lot of gangs around that area. I was with my kid. Not my DH. I would not taking a chance in confronting him face to face in that area.

Again, normally I don't care who parks in a handicapped spot. It's not my job to monitor and police the world. I know for a fact when I go to other stores I see people hop out of their cars who don't look handicapped. But I don't care. It's not my business. The thing about yesterday is the totality of the events. Maybe you had to be there. But here is this woman looking so helpless. The expression on her face of just shock. When she has done nothing wrong. And the rude jerk who just cut her off and knew it. And he got out and did even attempt to say, I'm sorry. Or I'll move in a minute or anything. Yes, the behavior was rude and entitled. And yes, he parked illegally. And yes, I do care about fellow mankind.

The problem with not speaking up is that jerks get to continue their jerky behavior because people (in general) are scared to speak up out of fear.

Jerks don't expect to get called on their rudeness.

Hahahahaha!  That is EXACTLY the kind of neighborhood it is.  Highly populated by Mexicans and blacks.  But I didn't want to say that and sound racist.

I have often wondered why places like that don't have a 15 minute parking space for things like paying a quick bill.

Actually Lily, where I used to live they had about eight 15 minute spots right after the handicapped spots just for that.  They were marked for picking up prescriptions.  I think it said 15 minute pharmacy parking.  People abused those too.

 And him blocking her in.

If he had caught me on a bad mood day, I may have been inclined to park such that he could not get out and ... oh darn, looks my truck won't start ... let me just lift the hood and figure out what it could be ...

It's not racist when it's true. Unfortunately, those kinds of neighborhoods tend to be mostly Mexican and Black. It's a cycle. They yell racism but then do nothing to break the cycle. Don't want a bad reputation? Don't continue perpetuating said bad reputation. And, society as a whole, needs to stop expecting the cycle to continue. Not many people are motivated to do better when they know they are fighting uphill against a deeply entrenched stigma and that society will look for reasons to stigmatize them too.

Now that would have been funny.
