A 30-year-old Riverhead man was arrested Saturday in the theft of a truck after the owner tracked it down, Riverhead Town police said.
Andrew A. Berenzy was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and possible additional charges were pending, police said.
Berenzy was arraigned in Riverhead Town Justice Court Sunday and was being held without bail in the Suffolk County Jail, police said.
Police said that shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, authorities responded to the 7-Eleven, at 1733 Old Country Rd. on a report that the owner of a stolen 2001 Chevrolet Silverado had found the vehicle there. The truck had been stolen earlier in the day from outside a Handy Pantry Food Store in Mastic Beach.
After being advised by her bank that her credit cards that had been in the truck were being used in the Riverhead area, police said the victim went to the town to try to find the vehicle and found it parked outside the 7-Eleven.
Police said the suspect walked out of the store and attempted to enter the stolen truck but was detained by the victim's son and a bystander until authorities from the Riverhead detective division were notified and responded.
