The proprietors of the Auschwitz concentration camp have found themselves in hot water after installing showers in the former Nazi extermination camp in a bid to “cool down” visitors to the onetime slaughterhouse, which is now a museum commemorating the Holocaust.
Mist showers have reportedly been installed at the death camp’s entrance to help tourists battle the high summer temperatures in Poland, where Auschwitz is located.
However, for some Jewish visitors to the museum, the showers have evoked harsh memories of the execution of more than 1.1 million at the death camp, many of whom were murdered by being marched into showers filled with poison gas.
“Israel visitors to the museum could not ignore the connotation of showers being put in place at a site where more than a million Jews were murdered by the Nazis in gas chambers during the Holocaust,” Israel Hayom reported on Monday.

Here's the thing - someone had to come up with this bright idea, and then someone had to approve it, and probably another person approved the expense, and then somebody installed them. The fact that NO ONE along this chain stopped and thought, "you know - perhaps showers as you enter death camp where people were mass executed in the SHOWERS is not such a good idea...."
I dunno - seems like somebody should have had that thought. Just reading the headline made it jump out at me.

I've never seen outdoor misters like these, used by people with their clothes on.
These are very common, in Texas.
At the zoo.
Outdoor restaurants.
Six Flags.
They are all over the place.
They spray a fine mist, that feels good on a hot day.
And no, they look nothing like a shower.
This.
Everything could be something if you want it to be.
Look. Not dismissing the travesty that occurred there at all.
This is just silly knee jerk reaction.

Looks a lot different from the misting system that is outside, in the open, used in almost every outdoor venue, completely voluntary, and doesn't kill.

I disagree. Although I don't agree with their reasons for putting them in, I do think that they could incorporate it into some kind of mock realism that could enhance the tour for many and bring home the horror to future generations who are far removed from such horrors.

Anything related to a shower or looking like a shower for the public should NOT be put there lightly. It's horrible. As Husker said- if it was purposely put there as a teaching tool, that is different - but as comfort? I don't think so.
And the misters in THAT picture look nothing like the misters at the zoo or anyway else.

I don't think this is a permanent installation.
I'd guess these are portables.
Easy to take down and store, once the weather cools off.
As for comfort. Not wanting to have a bunch of tourists passing out left and right from the heat, seems more like a health concern, rather than just comfort.

JMHO.
There are many other ways to cool people off. And this is Poland, not Texas. The average highs in the summer in Krakow is 77 degrees - not exactly killer weather.

77??????????????????????????????? WTH? That's like winter here.

They are in the middle of a heat wave. That is probably why they put up some misters.

So we're talking 90s. I get that people who are not used to heat might have a problem with that - but then they shouldn't be going out to non-air-conditioned places. What is the number one advice in a heatwave? Drink lots of water, stay out of the sun, and try to stay in cool places.

The "shower misters" were installed b/c people had to stand in line outside without any shade. Perhaps putting up canopies for people to stand under with some fans would be a good alternative.
The Jewish people visiting the site were horrified and said that the makeshift showers resembled those their Jewish relatives were forced to use even before entering the gas chambers. I think it is their impression that should matter most, don't you?

It was not a good solution at this exhibit due to the nature of the exhibit. Perfectly acceptable at the zoo or amusement parks. Not well thought out for Auschwitz.
Maybe it would be better to just let them collapse from the heat or go home. If they don't want to be reminded of the horror... why in hell are they visiting there??

So, part of remembering the horrors of their relatives means going through the motions of what they went through? There is a difference between remembering and making a mockery of it. There was no thought to this whatsoever.

I just don't understand why they are even going there, if they don't want to be horrified. There's plenty else to be horrified by at the concentration camp... besides the misters that were supposed to provide some relief.

Yes, there is plenty to be horrified by, without an additional modern day slap.

I would think that most of the visitors there wouldn't even think a thing about it. I wouldn't have. There are a few people complaining. I understand. It's was an unfortunate choice. What to they want them to do now?

Take them down and come up with a better plan for next time, I would think. And perhaps apologize for their thoughtlessness.

And it doesn't matter that the misting showers don't resemble the gas chambers. The Jews were told they were going to the showers - that is a bad enough correlation to be insensitive.

It was a really bad idea. You have to consider all the elements.

There is quite a difference between a shower in your home at a shower at the entrance to Auschwitz. If you don't understand that, you are seriously ignorant of the horrors and history of that camp.

I just think calling and associating these misters "showers" is ignorant and looking to be offended.

This isn't the zoo or a restaurant. I think given the circumstances it was a bad idea.

I agree. Much ado about nothing.
It's just another thing to be offended about. OMG. What can people do? What can't people do? It's a mystery to me... what's going to be offensive or thoughtless tomorrow. Who knew? Misters were bad?
Now if you want to be offended by Donald Trump... have at it! He's offensive in an awesome way.
I still can't believe the utter stupidity. I mean, real and complete lack of any thought whatsoever.
I say let them pass out then. Only problem is then this concentration camp would be on the hook for that. Fans and canopies aren't half as effective as misters. Trust me.
Well, the Israeli visitors disagree with you both. And their opinion about it matters much more.
Not really.
It's opinions.
Opinions are like butts.
Everybody has one.

I think you are wrong O4. I would absolutely think its a bad idea as a visitor on a hot day, and I am Catholic. Having grown up with friends parents/ grandparents and neighbors who were at those camps, the last thing I would expect as a "visitor convenience" is a shower. That is just an awful thought on those who approved it. Sure provide shade and water, but not in the form of a shower.

It's a no win apparently.
We're not talking desert conditions - it was in the 90s. SHADE and water would have been fine.

This is not about someone getting over a purse snatching or such. This is about a whole demographic nearly wiped out by being forced into a "shower". Anyone telling them to get over it, IMO is a jerk and insensitive. Flame suit on.
