I'm with Ray on this one. One compromise to consider for Lee though, don't proactively replace anything that isn't worn or failing, but carry some spare parts you might need with you in the trunk. Tucking away a replacement alternator, water pump, and drive belt could make an otherwise difficult and time consuming breakdown easy as pie to rectify. Otherwise, in the event of a breakdown in a remote area, you might be stranded a day or two for parts to arrive, with unanticipated motel bills, and even if you do eventually get a good repair, you'll be paying a premium parts price.
