Arby’s has apologized after an employee refused service to a uniformed Florida police officer.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department says that a uniformed cop was denied service at an Arby’s drive thru window simply for being a police officer.
Police Chief Dan Giustino said in a statement posted to Facebook that he was “offended and appalled” by the treatment of the cop. But Arby’s has since apologized, explaining that the employee’s behavior did not reflect the company’s values.
As a follow up to this incident, Chief Dan Giustino contacted the Arby’s corporation via telephone. Immediately following, Arby's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Brown, and Senior Vice President of Operations, Scott Boatwright, contacted Chief Giustino to convey their sincere apologizes on behalf of their organization.
Both gentlemen assured Chief Giustino that the employee’s behavior was unacceptable and not representative of the company’s values. Chief Giustino was appreciative and accepted their apology and now considers this matter closed.
It was not immediately clear whether the Arby’s employee involved in the incident has been fired.

A Kansas Taco Bell worker was fired after he wrote "PIG" on a police officer's taco order.
The police officer and his fiancee had reportedly picked up their to-go order in Newton Saturday, when they noticed the derogatory message.
The couple told KAKE-TV that they immediately called and spoke to the manager, who offered a refund and a new order.
Taco Bell quickly fired the worker and apologized to the officer and the local police department.
“We do not share the same belief or view as the employee whatsoever,” Jeff Graves, senior director of operations for Taco Bell, told the station.
“Our company, Taco Bell, has always been pro-law enforcement, military. We’ve always supported the police in our community. Many of our restaurants give police discounts when they come in and eat."

Who are these same idiots going to call when they need help?

I guess it's the new thing now. I found four stories like this. All fast food where they didn't serve the cop solely because they were cops.

We always loved it when the police would come in to eat. Especially at night when closing up.

I am not sure it is new. I remember, maybe last year, an incident of food tampering involving a police officer customer and the employee was charged. I Googled it and found that back in 2001 there was an increase in this:
The docket of food-tampering cases with police as victims is growing, and many officers say that they think twice about ordering fast food while in uniform. Some blame the teenagers fast-food places hire to do jobs that don't pay well and are hard to fill. Others cite antipolice sentiment in the general public. "It's consistent with the erosion of respect for authority figures," says Jim Pasco, executive director of the national Fraternal Order of Police.
There have been several occasions where law enforcement were boycotting Chipotles because some went there for lunch and the workers did the "hands up don't shoot" thing. They walked out and the places has been begging them to come back. I would be worried about my food too.
I don't think this is anything new. I've heard stories like this for decades. It is bad that it happens, and there is no excuse for it. Any one that does these mean things should be fired, and if the stories are to be believed, that's usually what I've heard happens.
This is horrible. AND these people are stupid. Always make friends with the cops, don't people know that?
Duh!!
At my library, we have a great relationship with the local police. We had an officer talk to the staff last year about crime in the community & when to call 911 if there was a problem patron. Basically, he said "NEVER hesitate to call us."
When I was in high school, I worked at 2 different restaurants the cops frequented. I NEVER got a ticket, ever. Although I would get pulled over and told to put on my seatbelt (this was before it was law).

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
This is so stupid. Like LL said make friends with the cops. When I was younger I worked part time at a gym that gave discounts to police & fire fighters. They were all pretty good guys. As an aside, I bet this crap never happens at Chick fil a where the kids are always clean cut & respectful.
UPDATE: Arby’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Brown apologized for the incident and offered a free combo meal this Friday to all law enforcement officers in the area.
On Thursday afternoon, Brown wrote:

A Florida police union has beef with Arby’s after an employee allegedly denied service to a police officer.
Dade County Police Benevolent Association is calling for a national boycott of the fast food chain after Pembroke Pines Police Sgt. Jennifer Martin was told that an employee didn’t want to serve her for being a police officer.
Arby's Apologizes After Employee Denies Service to Uniformed Police Officer
The police report said that a manager told Martin that employee Kenny Davenport didn’t want to serve her because she’s a police officer. The manager also reportedly laughed and said that Davenport was allowed to refuse service. Martin said she was worried about the condition of her food and got a refund.
Davenport claims that this was all a joke, but the PBA wants the employees involved to be fired.
“It is beyond comprehension and deeply troubling that a business would deny service to a law enforcement officer just for being a law enforcement officer […] This is yet another example of the hostile treatment of our brave men and women simply because they wear a badge. It is unacceptable and warrants much more than an apology. We support our brothers and sisters who wear the badge in Broward County and across the United States. Until corrective action is taken and the employees involved in this incident are terminated, we are calling for a national boycott of Arby’s,” Florida and Dade County PBA president John Rivera said in a statement.

Arby's employee accused of denying officer service speaks out
Arby's employee Kenny Davenport, 19. CBS Miami
PEMBROKE PINES -- An Arby's employee in Florida accused of denying a police officer service for being a police officer says it was all a joke, not a refusal of service.
CBS Miami reports that Kenny Davenport, 19, said he was working when Pembroke Pines Police Sergeant Jennifer Martin pulled up to the drive thru window. But he says their interaction was a joke that was taken the wrong way.
According to a police report on the incident, Martin was told by a manager at the restaurant that an employee, now identified as Kenny Davenport, did not want to serve her. The manager allegedly said, "He doesn't want to serve you because you are a police officer."
After the uncomfortable encounter, Martin said she was uncertain she wanted to eat at the restaurant because her food may be tainted. The manager tried to assure her everything was fine, and handed over her food.
According to the report, the manager allegedly laughed and said the clerk was allowed to refuse service to the officer.

"We don't hate cops," Davenport told CBS Miami. "We don't hate anybody. We're just trying to get people out of the drive thru."
Davenport says that he didn't refuse Martin service, but he was so busy he had to ask his manager for help. He said that is when the manager made the unfortunate joke.

CBS Miami previously reported that a South Florida police union called for a national boycott of Arby's after Martin was denied service.
"I am offended and appalled that an individual within our community would treat a police officer in such a manner. It is unacceptable," said Pembroke Pines Police Department Chief Dan Giustino.
Arby's issued an apology in regards to the incident.
"We take this isolated matter very seriously as we respect and support police officers in our local communities. As soon as the issue was brought to our attention, our CEO spoke with the Police Chief who expressed his gratitude for our quick action and indicated the case is closed. We will be following up with our team members to be sure that our policy of inclusion is understood and adhered to. Further, we will be following through with disciplinary action up to and including termination of the employees involved, as appropriate."

In reaction to the incident, the Dade County Police Benevolent Association is calling for the employees involved to be fired.
Davenport's grandfather tell CBS Miami that he believes the whole incident is being blown out of proportion. He raised his grandson and said he has respect for the police. He believes the whole thing is centered around a misunderstood joke.
"Officers lives matter," he said. "Everybody's life matters. Somebody made a joke and she just didn't take it the right way. She didn't think they were joking. She thought it was a serious matter. Now their job as an officer is very serious and I appreciate all that they do."
Kenny Davenport told CBS Miami he sees little point in explaining himself.
"There's no point in talking," he said. "I'm 19. She's an officer and I'm colored."
"We don't hate cops," Davenport told CBS Miami. "We don't hate anybody. We're just trying to get people out of the drive thru."

I tried to transfer the picture of the kid but it wouldn't transfer. Interesting.

The last time I was at Dunkin Donuts there was a cop behind me. I bought his breakfast even though they probably would have given it to him for free. Given the opportunity I would gladly do it again. I watched a disgusting video today where a "man" claimed it was open season on white cops and white men. It makes me nervous for my LEO family and friends.
We had a terrible tragedy here when a couple shot and killed two cops having lunch. A few months ago I was at a restaurant and recognized one of two cops who came in. The hostess seated them way in the back of an unoccupied area and stood guard. I walked over to say hi and she stopped to question me. The officer recognized me so I was able to pass, but it was nice to see the buffer for them to enjoy a meal. I didn't buy it for them, because I knew 100% it was free.
Arby's fires manager, suspends clerk who allegedly refused to serve Florida police officer
The Arby's fast food chain announced late Thursday that it had fired a Florida restaurant manager and suspended a clerk after a female police officer said she had been denied service because she was a cop.
Arby's spokesman Jason Rollins confirmed to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that manager Angel Mirabal, 22, and clerk Kenneth Davenport, 19, had been disciplined.
The chain known for its roast beef sandwiches became the center of a national firestorm after an incident Tuesday night, when Pembroke Pines Police Sgt. Jennifer Martin, 34, pulled up to the drive-thru and ordered a meal. When she handed over her credit card to pay, Davenport allegedly refused to ring her order up. That prompted Mirabal to say "He doesn’t want to serve you because you are a police officer."
Sgt. Martin finally received her food, but said she was too uncomfortable to eat it, so she returned it and got a refund. The next day, the department tweeted about the incident, which Chief Dan Giustino called "unacceptable."
"I am offended and appalled that an individual within our community would treat a police officer in such a manner," he said in a statement.
Davenport has said the controversy stemmed from a misunderstanding, and Maribal's comment was an attempt at a joke. Davenport told the Sun-Sentinel he was unable to ring up Martin's order due to the number of other customers he was servicing. He said Mirabal made his remark after Davenport asked him for help with the transaction.
"We don't hate cops,” Davenport told reporters Wednesday. "We don't hate anybody. We're just trying to get people out of the drive-thru."
On Thursday, WSVN reported that Arby's rivals took advantage of the flap between the police and the restaurant. McDonald's partnered with a local radio station to deliver bags of pancakes and Egg McMuffins to the department Thursday morning. The station reported that a local Whole Foods store put out a spread of its own, while residents supplied donuts and coffee from a local Dunkin' Donuts.
"We're here today to show our love for the community and the people that take care of us as first responders in the community," one woman said.
