DEAR ABBY: My sister moved in with me after my husband died. I thought it would be good for both of us, and we could go places together and share household chores. At the time, we were both working.
When I discovered she would sleep all day on our days off and didn't help with the housework at all, I was very disappointed. She would clean her room only when I got upset with her.
Now she does almost nothing. She won't clean her room and she sleeps for months without changing her sheets. I am sickened by the smell of her and her room. She hasn't showered or brushed her teeth in almost two weeks, and it doesn't look like she's in any hurry to do so.
We are both retired now and could enjoy going places together, but she would rather stay up all night and sleep all day. I am at my wits' end. I have begged, threatened and shamed, but nothing works. I am a very clean person and like to have a clean house. Help! -- WANTS MY CLEAN HOUSE BACK
DEAR WANTS: Changes in behavior like those you describe should not be ignored. Was your sister always like this? If not, she needs to be examined by a doctor to determine if she's depressed or having some other kind of mental problem. She should also be seen by a dentist if her oral hygiene is as poor as you say it is, while she still has teeth.
The living arrangement the two of you have doesn't appear to be healthy for either of you. Before this goes any further, consult an attorney for guidance. You may need help in getting her out after all this time -- or help finding other safe living arrangements for your sister if she's unable or unwilling to do it for herself.
Some people are just messier too. However, the lack of personal hygiene would be a big issue. She just needs to sit down face to face with sis and have a direct talk with her.

I agree...BIG red flag.
Has the sister always been like this? I doubt she would have invited her to move in if she had known.
That's actually a good point husker. In order to feel good about yourself, you need to first DO, then the good feelings will come. Far too many people think that feelings precede actions. Actually if you DO good, you will feel good. But, if you wait to feel good, you will be waiting till the cows come home.

I've got a friend who is depressed. Well no sh!t you're depressed. You up and quit two good jobs in succession and are now divorced and living in your mom's basement. That'd make me fvcking depressed.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

Those are good points. However, depression is a spiraling illness. You feel depressed so you do less and less to keep your life going. As you do less and less , you get more depressed. I disagree with husker that it is just as easy as 1, 2, 3. There is a point where you may need help with medication, counseling, etc. But, there is a the point where you simply have to get up off the sofa and engage yourself in life slowly but surely. You start by your own self. Get up. Fix your hair, put on makeup. Make the bed. Then, clean out a closet, do laundy. Cook something. Then move beyond that one step at a time.
I thought depression too. Serious depression because her lack of hygiene is being affected. Normal people having a bad day don't stop taking care of their hygiene. I brush my teeth twice a day, sometimes three, depending. Even when I'm deathly ill I have to brush my teeth. And I'm a PIA because I don't care what kind of surgery I had I still wanted to get up and get showered. I would rather have stuck my leg in a trash bag so I could get up and shower. What is going on with this woman is abnormal. I don't necessarily think the staying up late is an issue. A lot of people are night owls. I wouldn't look at that. I sleep late in the day because I go to bed at three am. I would actually look at how many hours she is sleeping.

Well, sitting home on your butt is certainly no solution.
No sh1t, Sherlock!
If you are CLINICALLY DEPRESSED, you are convinced that you are worthless and don't WANT to get better.

If you are a jobless slob--you are pretty worthless.
So some people are worthless? Is this what you are saying? Not everyone's life has value, some people's lives are without worth?
Um, yes. I know lots of them--and many more I don't know but have heard about. I call them oxygen bandits because they steal oxygen from everyone else.

Wow. What a sincerely repulsive attitude. Very Christian like. I thought you were one of the "all lives are precious" crowd. I can see now that I was mistaken. You think only SOME lives are worth saving, others are worthless. Got it.

People are assuming depression. There is another possibility - she's just a lazy ass free-loader.
That's always a possibility. I think most of us were just guessing depression because of the changes in her life. For some people retirement is not a good thing.

That's possible too. I think she needs to look at the whole picture. What has she been like over the years? I would assume she was at least bathing or the OP probably would not have thought moving in would be such a great idea.

Well, sorry - but if depression is brought on by "changes in life" rather than a chemical imbalance, then it IS just a matter of DOING rather than giving in.

Well, who knows? It could be a combination of things. At the very least she should have her thyroid checked, get checked for Lyme's disease and have a medical work up. There are lots of illnesses that can make you feel sluggish. And, Sis needs to sit down and tell her she needs to get help and if she doesnt' then Sis can kick her out or whatever she chooses to do.

Life changes can trigger a chemical imablance. When certain stressors are dealt with over time, the brain's chemistry changes in response and then the issue becomes chemical AND emotional. That's how depression and also certain mental illnesses work. Actual life events trigger a chemical response in the brain that is not healthy.
