Lead and Mercury in dietary supplements

Butala Emporium, Inc of Jackson Heights, NY, is voluntarily recalling eleven Ayurvedic (dietary) supplements (listed below) because the products were found to contain elevated lead and mercury levels which may cause health problems to consumers, particularly infants, small children, pregnant women, and those with underlying kidney disorders if consumed. The concentration of lead exceeds the recommended daily lead exposure for children less than 6 years of age and women of childbearing age and would likely be injurious to health.

Oh no! My Vata is in conflict with my Pitta, and my Kapha is feeling sluggish. Whatever shall I do now?

Actually, I think Ayurvedic herbal supplements are supposed to contain heavy metals. You can reduce the toxicity through prayer. Yep, that should do it.

I'm detecting someone trying to be witty but really just sounds like a douche bag.

It's a slam against Christians.

I see it as a slam against Magical Thinking. People (not just Christians) who think they will win a big Lottery through prayer, believe in Magic.

And people who take "supplements" like this, believing the hype that they will help them be healthy, are also Magical Thinkers.

Well, my husband totally believe is supplements. He should have been dead a long time ago, the way he abused his body. He's 65 and has the body, mind, and energy of a 40 year old. He takes his supplements faithfully. People half his age are jealous of him...

 So prayer is "magical thinking"?

Suppose I should turn the other cheek.

Again.

We should save this thread for later. I mean, seriously, we've even turned a vitamin thread into Christian bashing before a Christian ever posted on it????

How you gonna deny this one?

Depends (I think) on what you pray for, and what your expectations are.

Pray to to win the Lottery? Fine.

Expect to win because you prayed for it? Magical thinking.

Pray for supplements to make you healthy? Fine.

Expect that consuming lead and mercury will heal you BECAUSE YOU PRAYED defies logic.

Am I making this worse? cry

Rasa shastra, the practice of adding metals, minerals or gems to herbal preparations, may include toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic. Adverse reactions to herbs are described in traditional Ayurvedic texts, but practitioners are reluctant to admit that herbs could be toxic and that reliable information on herbal toxicity is not readily available. There is a communication gap between practitioners of modern medicine and Ayurveda.
Ayurvedic proponents believe that the toxicity of these materials is reduced through purification processes such as samskaras or shodhanas (for metals). These are similar to the Chinese pao zhi, although the Ayurvedic techniques are more complex and may involve prayers as well as physical pharmacy techniques. However, these products have nonetheless caused severe lead poisoning and other toxic effects. Between 1978 and 2008, "more than 80 cases of lead poisoning associated with Ayurvedic medicine use [were] reported worldwide". In 2012, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked Ayurvedic drugs to lead poisoning, based on cases where toxic materials were found in the blood of pregnant women who had taken Ayurvedic drugs.

Hindu prayer is Christian-bashing? Alrighty, then!

Yes, heavy metals are used. Yes, prayer is one thing used to reduce the toxicity.
Do with that what you will.
If you want to call that making fun of something, knock yourself out. I'll give you a challenge, though. Would you ingest something loaded with lead and mercury, knowing it was prayed over, so it should be OK?
No? Why not?

Wow. Looks like it took at least 8 hours of googling to find that spin.

Is it bad form to criticize someone's stupid behavior? Like, thinking something that is going to cause brain damage is okay for ANY reason?

I don't think it's bad form to criticize someone who still thinks that vaccinations cause Autism. Maybe that makes me a jerk.

What the hell? I have to sleep sometimes, you know. I'm quite familiar with alternative medicines, as it's in my purview as a health care practitioner. I'm also quite familiar with homeopathy, reiki, biodiscs, chakras, you name it. Anyone familiar with ayurvedic healing knows they use heavy metals. I have to know this stuff, in order to provide optimum care to my patients. Most are harmless, but some can be toxic and/or interfere with their current medical regimen. Maybe YOU would have to feverishly google for 8 hours, but I don't. Thanks for playing.

Most of it is bogus.

Back to WTF?????

ed posts a thread about vitamins and you immediately throw in bashing against religion as if that makes any general sense at all. And then your anti-theist posse comes along to defend it.

That's why you can't be taken seriously.

Ed posts a thread about heavy metals in ayurvedic supplements, which is quite common in that belief system. I posted FACTS. You want to address anti-theism? Write an angry letter to Ben Carson.

Getting your knickers in a knot is fun for you? OK. My definition of fun is somewhat different, but knock yourself out. If it's so much fun for you, maybe I'll post more in this vein. Glad to oblige. Don't complain later, though. Deal?

I suspect that people full of hate only see hate. It's called projection. There was no hate, implicit or implied, in what I posted.
