We’ve talked about them before, but tech support scams are still going strong. Since May 2014, Microsoft has heard from more than 65,000 customers about fraudulent tech support cons. And it’s one of the top scams we hear about through the Fraud Watch Network scam-tracking map.
How It Works
They call and claim to work for well-known companies like Microsoft, Norton or McAfee. They say your computer is infected with malware and then ask for remote access, or money, so they can “fix” it. Or they place ads in online search engines to trick you into calling them.
What can you do to avoid tech support scams?
Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.
Never provide your credit card information, financial information, or passwords to someone who claims to be from “tech support”.
Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the “service.” If there is, hang up.
If possible, take the caller’s information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.

OMG! Been dealing with this for 2 weeks. Finally said I was on the police force and want all their info. They hung up. I hacked a bit and they were calling out of a house in Cali and from India. It was MacAfee calls.
They tried to scam me yesterday. I needed tech support to install my anti-virus product, because it wasn't accepting my username. They wanted $120 to "clean up" my computer, because that's what was causing the problem. "Oh my! You haven't been doing proper maintenance!" Yeah, it had an oil change just last month.
I may be old, but not that old. I wouldn't send my bank info to a Nigerian prince either, no matter how convincing he sounds.
I ask them how they know and they say they are monitoring my computer at that moment.
I just flat out call them liars.
Once, they called when my computer wasn't even working.
It was all disconnected.
When I told them that, they hung up.

I got caught up in a fix your computer scam. I had brought my computer to a local company to fix some issues, they didn't see any issues (what a waste of money BTW) so I brought it some and googled a fix for Microsoft 8.0 . Be careful of the phone numbers you find googling, these scam artists are paying to be at the the top of google hits. They continue to call me, every time I tell them I know they are scammers and remove me from their list. The problem is they are in foreign countries that do not have to follow our do not call laws and such. We are all better off just paying the high rates for the Geek Squad or such.
