A Washington school district's decision to institute a 'hands off' policy to 'minimize negative physical interaction' among elementary students that would seemingly stop them from playing Tag is under fire.
After the Mercer Island School District announced its decision about the new recess policy, a group of parents quickly joined the STAR MI - 'Support Tag At Recess in MI' - group on Facebook.
The parents aren't buying the district's rationale that getting students to play other games like wall ball, foursquare and hopscotch 'will ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students'.

The district wants students to focus on the alternative games and 'keep their hands to themselves', Mercer Island School District communications director Mary Grady said in an email to Q13.
According to STAR MI: 'The game 'tag' was recently prohibited by Mercer Island Schools.
'Our group believes 'tag' and other child led games encourage independence and much needed activity.
'Our group wants to bring back 'tag' to Mercer Island schools.'
The woman who created STAR MI, Melissa Neher, has two kids who attend Mercer schools.
She said: 'I played tag. I survived.
'In this day and age of childhood obesity, there's a need for more activity.'
The group began gaining attention and caused the district to respond directly to the alleged ban.
A release from the district said: 'There is not a ban on tag.
'Our principal was communicating a new message about a 'hands off' expectation at recess.
'The new expectation was made with the best of intentions.
'Our elementary principals and other administrators came up with the 'hands off' idea to help minimize negative physical interactions among elementary children during recess or unstructured play.'
The controversy was addressed by district superintendent Dr. Gary Plano on Thursday night at a school board meeting, according to the Mercer Island Reporter.
He said: 'It's regretful that what seemed to be a well-intentioned desire to help protect kids has taken a life of its own.'

Thing is, if they had proper recess and P.E. the fries and ketchup wouldn't be a concern.

Tomatoes are just like grapes, grown on a vine. The Reagan Administration changed them to "vegetables" for federally supported school lunch programs because schools complained that kids never ate the veggies they were given.
So, ketchup became the vegetable kids would eat.
Potatoes, on the other hand, actually ARE root vegetables, like carrots and turnips.

Thanks for the agricultural lesson.

Congress classified ketchup as a vegetable. Not the school system.
The school system has gone along with it. They, better than anyone, should be better educated about it.
They are better educated about it. But Congress passed the law, so the school system is just following the law. The school system didn't make the law. But they have to follow it.

They don't have to count that as one of the actual vegetables - they can give real vegetables. Congress doesn't micro-manage what the school systems buy. They simply say you have to have so many as a minimum.
