General Mills is voluntarily recalling several days of production of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios cereal produced at its Lodi, California facility on certain dates in July of this year because of an undeclared allergen – wheat – with potential adverse health effects.

I saw this yesterday. Ours is not in the recall. Apparently this has sparked a HUGE debate. We had bought our first Cheerios in forever not long ago.

I know some people have a problem with wheat. But a recall?
Why not just say "hey, it's got wheat in it. Don't eat it"?

It's actually NEVER had wheat in it. But they made a huge point of making sure it was free of gluten contaminants. Here's the issue. If the oats that are in it are shipped, held, transported, or processed on a machine with wheat already on it it will make the oats contaminated. Therefore, people that have gluten allergies can't eat it. And it's a HUGE issue. For people with wheat allergies it could mean life or death.

Yeah, it's actually a huge deal when you go to the point of making a commercial saying your DIL is gluten intolerant so you've changed things so that families can enjoy Cheerio's together now. Gluten intolerant people rushed out like crazy to buy a favorite food that was finally safe to eat. I only buy Kix, cornflakes, Frosted Flakes on a rare occasion, and all the Chex cereals except for the wheat based one. All the other Chex cereals except that one are gluten free. Those are brands I know and trust. So Cheerio's coming out was a big deal. I do buy Raisin Bran because SS likes it but DS doesn't like that one. Gluten allergies are a pain and cereal is one of the big ones. It's hard to find a regular cereal that everyone can eat. And like. And doesn't cost an arm and leg.
