Yup. I've known this for a long time.

Another bad one, IMHO, is the Susan B Kolman Breast Cancer Research fund. Most of that money does not go for research. This group has become a political funding group.

Does it ever really matter? I used to knock myself out providing links, etc. But, then the libs would be like, "oh that's from Breitbart or Fox" so that link doesn't count. They always just attack the link rather than actually address the content of whatever it is you are posting.

Yes. Not all charities are non profit. I have never heard any one of these claim to be non profit.

I use to work for Goodwill. Ran the local store. We did a lot good. Helped a lot of people. And I met and became friends with a lot people.

Matter of fact, when I went so far off the reservation, they stood by me. Helped me get my act together again. Gave me a chance to earn my self respect back. And that after I stole from them.

So yeah. Some charities are not non profit. But they do a LOT of good. And it takes a lot of money to do what those charities listed actually do.

IMHO, the Goodwill one is a misinterpretation of the companies goals. I don't think he makes much money off the items sold there.

The employee's learn skills and are given a chance to make good decisions on how to change their lives for the good.

I refuse to give to the Red Cross.

I like Goodwill. There goal is to employ people others won't and get them job experience to help them get a fresh start. That is a good goal, IMO.

I know when I was manager of the local store, I did none of the hiring. I gave applications but the hiring was done by another. They would show up with a card introducing themselves.

I had 2 full time and several part time and then volunteers.

Think before you donate

CEO salaries and pass through of funds to their stated purpose:

American Red Cross

CEO salary $651,957 plus expenses

March of Dimes

10% of revenues goes to help the needy

United Way

President earsn $375,000 salary plus generous expenses

UNICEF

CEO receives $1,200,000 plus expenses and a Rolls Royce

5% of donations go to the cause

Goodwill

CEO get $2.3 million a year.

NOTHING goes to help the poor.

Wow! Those are some pretty nice salaries.
I'm surprised that so little goes to those in need. Do they mean just in direct payments? Or does it include service provision?

For example, Goodwill: maybe no cash goes directly to the needy, but don't they run shelters and food kitchens and things like that."

United Way helps to fund a lot of community programs, so again, no money goes directly to the poor, but they do have programs where they give away winter coats and boots, hats, mittens to needy, and have social support networks and counseling programs.

March of Dimes does a lot in prenatal research and stuff like that don't they?

There might be some bias in the source. Or it could be total BS.

Personally I think Charity begins at home. Take care of YOUR family. Then take care of your community around you, your neighbor, your home church and local charities. THEN branch out.

True. But like with United Way, though it's a national organization, the money raised stays in the community it was raised in.

I'd like to see the other numbers.

The complete break down of where money goes.

A lot of times, if you see the whole picture, it changes the way you see the small part presented.

Like I said, I have never heard any of these claim to be non profit.

And these are big organizations. It's a real job to keep them functioning.

I really doubt the Red Cross could help so many around the world with strictly voluntary help.

This.  And what Czech said.  Sure they pay minimum wage to workers.  But most of their workers are people who wouldn't be employable by other people.  My son is  a good example of that.  Minimum wage for these people is better than no wage at all.

I haven't looked yet, but we can probably get that breakdown from each organization's website.

Dd's friend has worked for Goodwill for about four years now. He's full time and has decent benefits. He is a backroom lead and makes a few bucks above minimum. The regional head hauncho put a ton of pressure on the stores. It's all about sales and moving merchandise out onto to floor.

Yeah, you have to sell things.

We had a shipment of new appliances once. Stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers and dishwashers.

Brand new, never used, still had the plastic everywhere.

They were in a building that was burned or tornado or something.

They had scratches and dents.

But they all worked. Name brands.

They sold for about $100 each.

If you don't sell the stuff, you can't fund the programs without the money.

I used to be on the investment committee for United Way. We'd have to go around to the organizations and check up on them for how they were spending the money and then recommend whether to fund them again.

United Way paid for my daycare while I was in college. They put me on sliding scale service. I paid ten dollars a week. That doesn't sound like a lot until you realize I was only getting a $226/month welfare check.

My favorite charity is St. Jude's Children's hospital and a local animal program - Dr. Goode's homeless pets foundation.

I don't have the resources to give to every charity.

I support local charities as much as I can.

The churches food bank, local shelters.

I use to send good, used toys and clothes to the women's shelter here. I still send clothes from time to time.

I took a bunch of things to one of the bigger outreach programs here once. They were thrilled with the clothes and few toys.

But it was amazing how much they got excited over the books.

I took two sets of encyclopedias and 2 boxes of books.

They were so thrilled to have those books.

Who knew?

I gave some baby items to a local thrift store many years ago. After dropping the stuff at the back door and went around to the front to walk around. I was near the receiving area and could hear the volunteers fighting over the stuff I had just donated. I have never donated anything else to that charity in the past 18 years

You can find some cool stuff at Goodwill.

Here are the rules

Customers brings in donations and you give them a reciept for what they say it is worth.

Donations are not to be opened, gone through or in any way tampered with.

Donations are taken to the cleaning house. There, they go through it, clean it, repair it, sort it and prepare it for distribution.

Employees can not purchase or set aside any item once redistributed.

Once the item has been placed on the sales floor, it can then be purchased by anyone.

Micah and I loved getting albums in. We would go through those just as soon as they hit the sales floor.

I got a few collectable albums through Goodwill.

Couple KISS albums and a Lynyrd Skynyrd album.

Give less than $2.00 for them.

Sold them for $160 to a local collector.

Neighbor was fired from goodwill for setting all the good stuff aside and buying it for a quarter. She was one of four to get busted. At our center it's received and sorted by the same people.

Caitlyn worked at SA last summer. She said they clean nothing. It comes in the door and on the shelf it goes.

She said there are stacks and stacks of stuff that just rots cause there is no where to put it.

That is why the rules are what they are.

There is a new Goodwill store in Chattanooga I have been meaning to go to.

All new things. Nothing in that store is donations.
