Does anyone know anything about cars? When I hit the brakes it sounds like the trunk of the car is dragging along the ground. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the car stopping; no drag or drift or delayed stop. But damn, there is a grinding noise like a piece of the rear end of the car is about the fall out on the cement.
Is this damage to the rear disk brakes? Any thoughts? The car is about 13 years old, driven by my grandparents not very far and pretty gently. It's just old. Hopefully it's not the gearshift or something coming unconnected from the entire system . . .
How many miles total on the car? How many miles since the brakes were serviced / changed?
From you description, I suspect that at least one of the brake pads has worn out completely, to the point where one or more of the rivets that hold the pads in place is now scoring the brake disk.
You have to get this looked at immediately.

If you don't have a mechanic you trust, take a look at cartalk.com, mechanic files.

There is always the Budget Brake & Muffler place, too.
I learned to not trust them.
Not only do they use cheap parts that might not last very long, and might not have the stopping power you need,
but they seem to always come up with additional things your car "needs".
I was in a Midas Muffler shop once, getting a new muffler. I SAW the mechanic take a can of spray oil, go to spray oil on a rear shock absorber, and spray himself in the face.
A few minutes later, he came into the waiting room, and told me my rear shocks were leaking oil and had to be replaced ( !!!!! ) . (His eyes were bloodshot red.)
No thank, just replace the muffler. (There's an easy test for shocks and struts, if you want to know what it is.)
