Two deputies who were accused of killing a mentally ill college student in a jail in Georgia have been cleared.
Former jailers Jason Kenny and Maxine Evans were found not guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of Matthew Ajibade, who died strapped to a chair after being punched and kicked in the head and tasered in the groin by officers trying to subdue him.
Ajibade, 21, was having a bipolar episode, his family claimed, when officers forced him to the ground inside the jail before tasering him when he resisted.
Shocking footage from inside the jail shows officers forcing Ajibade to ground and tasering him.
The Nigerian then grabs the taser himself before a jailer's kick to the head puts a sudden end to his efforts to fight back.
He was then strapped to a chair, where Ajibade's family attorney Mark O'Mara said the student was tasered multiple times in the groin.
A graphic video obtained by NBC News shows deputies tasering the young man in the groin while he was retrained and screaming in agony He was then left tied to the chair for an hour-and-a-half. When deputies returned, Ajibade was dead.
A coroner had ruled the case a homicide and said Ajibade died from blunt force trauma. No details of the sentences were immediately available.
Ajibade's cousin Chris Oladapo said in a statement through his attorney: 'I am not surprised by the verdict. I knew that that same system that failed Matthew would not be the system that got him justice.'
Nine deputies were fired in the aftermath of Ajibade's death.
In a separate civil lawsuit Ajibade's family alleges that the incident started on New Year's Day when the student was having a manic episode caused by his bipolar disorder, and his girlfriend called police for help.
The suit claimed that she told officers what was happening and gave them a bottle of Ajibade's medicine. But instead of taking him to the hospital, they arrested him.
The police report said that deputies responded to a domestic violence call and Ajibade was arrested on those charges as well as battery and resisting arrest.
A deputy suffered a broken nose in the altercation, officials said.
Ajibade was put in restraints after fighting with officers and was later found unresponsive in his cell, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the jail, the coroner's report found

Kenny was found guilty of the lesser charge of cruelty to an inmate while Evans was found guilty of public records fraud and three counts of perjury for her false grand jury testimony regarding the restraint chair log, said O'Mara.
Former jail nurse Greg Brown had originally been accused of involuntary manslaughter but that charge was dropped. He was, however, found guilty of making a false statement.
