Cancelled Wedding

What would you do if your daughter's fiancé called off a $35,000 wedding at the very last minute?

(...and deposits have already been paid, and more bills are on the way...?)

There are infinite conclusions to that unfortunate and expensive scenario, and plenty of them don't end well for anyone involved.

But as KCRA News reports, if you're like the Duane family from California, you take the high road.

When the Duanes found out their daughter's wedding was canceled because the groom got cold feet, they decided to turn lemons into lemonade.

Instead of just getting mad — and honestly, who could blame them? — the bride's parents still threw the reception. And they invited Sacramento's homeless population to partake.

There was plenty of food for those from a local shelter, as the city's Citizen Hotel (where the reception had been scheduled to take place) had prepared to feed about 120 wedding guests.

The Duanes didn't skimp on the menu, either — those who dropped in for a warm meal filled their plates with salmon, tri-tip beef, and gnocchi, among other (delicious) things.

“I feel a lot of heartache and heartbreak" for my daughter, said Kari Duane, the would-be-bride's mother. "But I will take away something really good from this."

With more than 2,600 homeless people around town (Sacramento has been struggling to curb homelessness in recent years, as The Sacramento Bee reported in July), there was no shortage of folks to appreciate the Duanes' kind gesture.

The feast was more than just a meal for those who made it out.

“When you're going through a hard time and a struggle, for you to get out and do something different — and with your family — is really a blessing," Rashad Abdullah, a homeless man, explained to KCRA.

Erika Craycraft, another homeless guest who enjoyed the meal, thought the Duanes' decision to give away food was especially thoughtful, given the circumstances.

This family is a wonderful example of kindness and generosity. They took their lemons and made lemonade for others. I like them.

I hope the bride can find a man who truly loves her. She's a keeper, IMHO.

That is awesome. As a naturally curious person I want to know why the wedding was cancelled. I can only assume she didn't have her certificate of an intact hymen.

LOL I saw this on the news about four or five days ago. He told her he didn't love her and didn't want to marry her. Which, as ugly as it is, it's still better than a divorce. So I have to give him a tiny bit of credit.

My SIL left her first baby daddy at the aisle.  Day before the wedding she called it all off.  Her wedding dress was thousands of dollars.  Why didn't he get married?  She said he was too soft and cried at movies and stuff.  She said he's a big pansy and she wanted to be married to a real man.  She's such a douche.  Her now DH is finally learning to stand up to her but for years she had him cowering.  Her son's father has gone on to get a really good job driving big rigs that haul heavy equipment.  Things like CAT tractors.  He's also married to a really nice woman with two girls of her own.

What a terrible reason to ditch someone, besides I assume she knew this about when she accepted his proposal.  And it sounds like her DH isn't exactly a He-Man.

I'm glad the sensitive guy did well for himself.

Oh Lexxy, my VSS SIL is something. I could tell so many stories. Like how she named her daughter after her husbands g/f so that every time he called his daughter he would be "reminded" that she won out over her. Or the time she wanted to know how big DH er was... She was comparing all the men in her family to find out who was the um "biggest". Or how about the time she took pole dancing classes for fun and exercise and showed up at Thanksgiving in six inch heels and gave us all a demonstration of what she'd learned. She wants six kids and all her FB posts complain about how horrible it is to be a SAHM. Her brother, my DH, can't stand to be around her.

Doesn't mean it isn't insane. I'm betting my $3,000 wedding spawned a marriage that will last longer than most $30,000 weddings.

Weddings very so much.  Depends on where you are and what you want.  I've seen beautiful wedding pulled off really inexpensively and also very lavish weddings.  It's easy to get out of control.

My mom makes the best wedding cakes money can buy--and she doesn't get $300 much less 3,000.

I bet my wedding was less than a thousand and it was really nice.

But cost doesn't mean a better marriage.

Cheap or over the top extravagant, doesn't matter if both of those in it doesn't want it.

Dang. My DH got a deal!

Our wedding cost less then $800.00, 40 years ago.

Mom made my wedding dress and the bridesmaids dresses.

We cooked all the food.

My great aunt raised the flowers.

DH's mom made the wedding cake.

We had over 300 guests.

The after party lasted until 4 in the morning.

It was grand.  smile

So anyway, I thought what the family did was a great gesture. They all could have been so emotionally drained that they may have chosen just to walk away, but instead they organized this most awesome meal for those families. I think that is a great way to turn the other cheek.

Legal aide did my divorce. I think it cost me twenty dollars. But honestly, there was nothing to do but have the papers signed. Child support had already been set, we had no assets to divide, and I was given custody. It was just a matter of paperwork.

 I went through 3 attorneys.

The first, she drew up the papers, we were about to sign but he got a bug up his but about the child support. I realized I wasn't going to be able to afford her. Plus I was pregnant and nothing would be final until the baby was born.

So I dropped her.

Second, we were trying to work things out. Or I thought we were anyway. That's when I got pregnant again. Total surprise. So we just did a legal separation cause once again, nothing could be final till the baby was born.

Third time was the charm. It had been 3 years since we split. I had done everything I knew to do to make things work. Counseling, time, everything.

It was a long process. But worth it.

Perhaps, but at least the food wasn't thrown away and those people from the shelter benefited.  Plus they would recoup only a fraction in taxes of the total cost.

Why not write it off if you can? Why is that "cynical" to feed the homeless and take a tax write off? Not sure what would be wrong with that.

Unfortunately, it's only deductible if it's a donation to an approved non-profit organization / charity.

Maybe if they'd called up a local homeless shelter or church, said "we have some food we'd like to donate to you, can you get people here?" then it might have been a donation to that charity.
