RAY'S HOT WATER MYSTERY

RAY: A few weeks ago, my wife and I had occasion to visit New York City and stay at one of the finer hotels—you know, one that actually had beds and sheets.
 
I'm sure all of you have noticed this: If you go into the bathroom in your hotel room and turn on the hot water, you get it very nearly instantaneously. So, I'm convinced that the water heater has got to be under the sink, which is called a "point of use" hot water heater.
 
I immediately drop to my knees, and I'm on my back looking up under the sink and I see nothing. So, I decide to investigate. I walk up and down the corridor, figuring somewhere there's got to be a "Mechanicals" room where the water heater is, and it's obviously going to be right near my room.
 
All night long I'm tossing and turning. I can't figure this out. At 2:00 in the morning, I jump out of bed and run to the room next door. I know this is the utility room. It's not a real hotel room, it's a phony room. I pound on the door, expecting no one will answer. 
 
A guy opens the door in his underwear: "Whaddaya want?"
 
So, I know that's not the answer. The next morning, I ask one of the chambermaids, "Where is the water heater on this floor?"
 
She says, "There's no water heater on this floor."
 
I ask the concierge, "Is there a water heater above us or below us?"
 
He says, "No, monsieur. All zee water heaters are in zee basement."
 
So the question is, if the water heaters are in the basement, and I'm on the 11th floor, how can I have hot water instantaneously?

THE ELUSIVE VACUUM LEAK


RAY: A few months or weeks ago, one of my guys was under the hood of an old Chevy pickup truck,trying to find a vacuum leak. The way you find vacuum leaks is, we use a little wand that shoots propane. When the vacuum leak and the propane meet, you'll suck the propane in and the engine will begin to run smoothly, because now you're making the fuel-air mixture correct. Are you with me so far?

 

TOM: Right. And as soon as you take the propane wand away, all of a sudden, you've got far more air compared to the fuel than you're supposed to have, and it runs lousy again.

RAY: Exactly. So there he is under the hood with the wand, and he's having lousy luck. A few minutes later, I see him doing something very interesting. He's pulling off the spark-plug wires and he's putting them back on, but on the wrong plugs. Two minutes later, I hear him on the phone ordering the part that he needs to correct the vacuum leak. How did he do it?

RAY: What he did by hooking up the spark-plug wires incorrectly and running the engine was, he made it
backfire through the intake manifold. And when that happens and you get combustion taking place in the manifold, he saw a puff of smoke. And he found the gasket that was blown.

TOM: Boy, that's very good!

RAY: Do we have a winner this week?

I figure that in a big hotel, there's always SOMEONE using hot water.

I figure, like Ed, someone's always using the hot water. Another guess would have something to do with where the hotel laundry and kitchens are. If they are at differing ends of the building from where the water heaters are, there would probably always be hot water moving through the pipes.
