I've been hosting Thanksgiving since I got married, in 1981. With only a couple of years off, in all this time.
I've always liked Honeysuckle White turkey. Fresh, not frozen.
And, for all these years, everyone loved and enjoyed the dinner!
Two years ago, Wayne got it into his head, that a "free range" turkey, would taste much better.
I told him I was willing to give it a try.
So, off to Central Market I go. I paid over $60 for a freakin' free range bird.
Roasted it up.
And GACK! It was terrible!
I swore, never again. I tried it. I hated it! It didn't even smell right, let alone taste good.
Last year, I was back to my Honeysuckle White, fresh turkey.
Life was good!
Now, Wayne is mentioning, trying a free range bird again!
Now, I'm thinking...I do all the cooking for the feast. I should roast the kind of bird that I know will be yummy.
If Wayne wants a free range bird, he can hike it up to Conor's house, and cook it there. And bring it home when it's done. Conor only lives one minute away. (And I don't have enough room, to cook two turkeys.)
Tell Wayne to cook his bird at Connor's. Don't lie but hedge. I know how much you loved that turkey and I wouldn't want you to miss having some but it would help out so much if it you cooked it at Connor's house. I have so much other stuff to cook for the day here. Thanks hon, I love you! :)

NJN, it's too late to hedge! (Although, it was sweet of you to suggest it!)
Wayne already knows how much I hated the free range turkey! I could barely eat two bites!
I'm going to suggest that he cooks one at Conor's house, if he wants one that badly.
(Love the man, but God, I hated that bird! And, he knows it!)

Well, that's what I meant. Tell him you know he wants one and you'd love for him to make one at Connor's but you're making the other one there.

We all like the smoked bird from a local place, but mom hates it. So we never get the smoked bird.

This is the best compromise I can think of.
What do you guys think?
Free range is dumb. It takes a LOT more land resources to raise free range birds or grass fed beef. Huge waste of resources.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

People like to b!tch about what they perceive as "factory farms" (which is a stupid term, anyway)--but the fact is that those farms efficiently produce a uniform, quality product at the least cost possible.

Free range isn't all it's cracked up to be. TJ's sold free range steaks and they were horrible.
Grass fed beef tastes differently because of what the cows eat. That is actually what they are supposed to taste like. It's really just a matter of getting used to it.
Free range treats the animals more humanely, among other things, and to some, that is more important than a little taste difference.

A. Plus it takes a chainsaw to cut through it.
B. Yeah--idiots.

Funny how we always have to overcomplicate things! You know what works and what tastes good. For me, I am getting a Honeysuckle white. Don't care if is fresh or frozen. It's fine either way.
