Does anyone else have songs that always make them emotional?

Three that always do it to me:

"Holes in the floor of heaven" Steve Wariner

"Just a Dream" Carrie Underwood

"Baby Mine" From Dumbo

And anything about life and kids growing up seems to do it now too like,

"Then they do" and "You're Gonna Miss This" Trace Atkins

Yup. Dh is gone and I'm sitting here watching Youtube videos and bawling.

Daddy's Hands. The Judd

Over you by Miranda Lambert. Almost the exact story of when my dad passed away down to the Christmas presents and md-February part. And yet I still sing it when we go to karaoke.

A lot of worship songs make me cry. Same thing with Christmas songs.

Some songs make me cry because of memories attached to them. Cowboy Jack (my Grandpa) and 18 Wheels A Hummin' (my Aunt Maggie) come to mind. The guy that does 18 Wheels (Red Sovine) has another song - Teddy Bear - that makes me cry.

There are few songs that make me melancholy, sad or nostalgic when I hear them:

"Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg

"Ships" by Barry Manilow

"10000 Miles" by Mary Chapin Carpenter

"Heart Of Mine" by Boz Scaggs

"All By Myself" by Eric Carmen

"Vincent" by Don McLean

A version of Hallelujah, but I am not sure who sings it. It is a woman, and there are no instruments. It is just so sad.

I will think of more later.

THe Christmas Shoes I just can't get into. It is too over the top and preachy for me. It generally makes me roll my eyes.
My sister, on the other hand, cranks it up and sings along while sobbing.

Sorry by Meg Myers, and also Lemon Eyes by her both make me misty eyed.

Amazing Grace. It was sung at my Grandma's funeral. A couple months after she died, it played at a restaurant I was eating lunch at. There I am, sitting at the table alone bawling into my soup. I'm getting better at making it through the song. Which is good, because I love it

I like God bless the USA. When EXDH was a drill instructor I would go for the ceremony when the recruits would complete the crucible. They would play that song and everyone would be bawling. Especially the young men who just transitioned from recruit to Marine.

Christmas Shoes

It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two
Not really in the Christmas mood

Standing right in front of me was
A little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful, if mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me

He said, "Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me sir, what am I going to do
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes"

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
And I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
"Mama's gonna look so great"

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful, if mama meets Jesus tonight

I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me what Christmas is all about

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful, if mama meets Jesus tonight

I want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight

Christmas Shoes is a song that is very dear to me. It embodies what Christmas is truly about - selflessness, love, having compassion for your fellow people - all things that Christ taught us to be. DH hated the song until he took the time to really, truly listen to it and understand what it's about. Now he likes it. It is a sad song but the embodiment of the Christmas spirit in it is very powerful for me. The video is really well done, too. So many songs extol the commercialization of Christmas (Santa Baby, being one). Christmas Shoes is the antithesis of those songs.

There's nothing preachy or over the top about Christmas Shoes. It's about a little boy whose mother is dying and all he wants to is to put one last smile on her face. He doesn't want toys for himself. He wants shoes for his mother. Calling Christmas Shoes preachy or over the top would be the same as calling Toys for Tots (or any other charity drive) preachy or over the top. Every time you give to one of those drives, you are doing what the gentleman did in the song - helping out someone else. That gentleman could've been rude to the little boy or ordered him out of the way. Instead, he put aside his own irritation at waiting and gave the little boy the time of day and gained a new appreciation for what he has as a result.

It took awhile for it to grow on me. I had to learn what it was about first. At first, I thought it was just a sob song but once I found the lyrics and really studied them, it hit me what the song was about.

Same thing with Blessings (Laura Story). I know the song only resonated with me because of where I was in life when I first heard it. But, there's also a back story to that song too and it took on more meaning for me when I found out the back story.

It does. But, with so many songs that extol commercialism, anything to the contrary will come across as sledgehammerish. For me, Santa Baby is that sledgehammer feeling. Yes, I get it. You want more more more. It's a cute song but sheesh.

The songs that will tear me up, every time I hear them are.

The theme from "Brian's Song".

And, this song, from the sound tract from Ken Burns, The Civil War.
