You know what else reduces ADHD? Discipline.

Too many these days have an attitude that this and other "behavior disorders" can't be dealt with by using discipline.

Discipline does not dispel pent up energy.  Kids need the ability to burn it off.  Starting school too early and then no recess IS a problem.  They are still kids - not little robots.

They have all of their lives to be in school. Not sure what the hurry is.

Yes. They need recess. And no. School shouldn't start too early.

I'm saying a whole lot of the ADHD is just lack of discipline.

I think a lot of ADHD problems could be better managed if kids, even High School kids had some time OUTSIDE on the playground. But, now little Johnny can't have his arse be cold, so they don't even send kids outside anymore. I remember we were literally tossed out onto the playground after lunch and it didnt' matter what the whether was. Unless it was pouring rain, you went outside. Now, kids can barely function unless the weather is sunny and 70.

There is a difference in energy that needs to be used and a kid just not taught self discipline.

That's what I am talking about.

It's as if people don't know how to just be now. Everyone has to be doing something constantly.

Yes, it's annoying. Parents are constantly shoving crap into their kids faces. God forbid that Johnny be bored! OMG! How terrible! And, can we seriously not drive an hour in the car without bring cheerios and bottled water and packing food like we are going on extended safari? Then we wonder why kids have no self control. I always thought that kids should sit in church services. Not be shuffled off to Sunday school. Nursery for infants, but let kids learn to sit quietly for an hour. Yes, they might squeak out a bit but how else can they learn if never given the opportunity. We made our kids sit with us. And, they had to sit quietly. They could day dream or stare off into space. But, they didn't get to sit there playing with a phone or a game boy or sit on the floor coloring. Show some respect and sit in the pew and sit quietly. Then we wonder why so many fail at school.

I agree.

We had children's church as kids. It was modeled after the adult service. Meaning you found a seat, there was singing, a message and it was over about the same time church was over. There was no craft or snack or anything. Every once in a while, on special occasions, there was a puppet show instead of the CC preacher. Yes. Our CC had and actual preacher.

School was another place we learned to sit and do our work.

If you misbehaved, you were punished.

Now it's almost a crime to tell a kid no.

LOL, not here. Unless it's below zero or raining, kids are outside. Parents are instructed over and over again to make sure to dress your child appropriately. And I like it that way. Kids need to run around, they need fresh air.

I agree, with the discipline.

Our schools send the kids out unless the temps are below 20 degrees. Rain or shine, hence, the broken arm. That I don't like. They can have indoors recess like I had in the 1970's, growing up in sunny So.Cal. But there needs to be some recess. When it was raining, ours was in the gym. I think that's reasonable. I don't think it's reasonable to send them out on the slippery blacktop or monkey bars in the rain. That's negligence.

My boys go to church every week. We started young. As babies. When they became mobile, we were in the crying room. But we graduated from that very early, and began sitting in the front. Children benefit more from seeing what is going on up front. The boys occasionally go to Children's Church. But it's like Lily described, although I don't think they ever had a puppet show. The sermon they hear is the same as we hear, only spoken in words the children can understand better.

Those puppet shows were a real treat.

It was such a rare thing that we all sat perfectly still and quiet so we didn't miss anything.

So wait, if starting school later decreases "ADHD" perhaps the condition is not ADHD and just a lack of sleep and poor nutrition? ADHD has been way over diagnosed for the past 30 years.

DD's school in Ohio wouldn't let the kids out for recess if the temp was below 32 (which it was for 4-5 months) or if there were any puddles on the playground. It was ridiculous. And indoor recess was doing puzzles at their desks quietly. Disaster. Total disaster for my DD.

Indiana pushed the kids out the door no matter what - unless it was actively raining. If it was raining, they went to the gym and played semi-organized games, relay races etc.

The more she was able to move the better off she was. She just can't sit still. Even now, the ACT test was a nightmare for her.

Oh, I completely agree with that. Especially the sleep. I think parents don't realize how much sleep their kids actually need.

And it isn't that hard to have a real bedtime. It's just a matter of parents putting the kid's needs in front of their own wants.

Around here, everything was turned off an hour before bedtime.

After a while, they put themselves to bed.

So nice when they go to bed without fussing and you have that quiet time. It was always my favorite part of the day.
