High School Cheerleader Banned for Tweet On Illegal Immigration

A High School cheerleader in Revere, Mass., is being benched for the rest of the season as punishment for her post on Twitter about illegal immigrants.

“When only 10 percent of Revere votes for mayor cause the other 90 percent isn’t legal,” Caley Godino posted on Twitter reported Boston’s Fox 25. The post was “a response to a tweet from her teacher about the low voter turnout for November’s mayoral race. Caley says she meant her tweet as a political comment, not a racial one,” Fox 25 reported.

“I see Donald Trump a lot on it and I don’t see what’s so different based on that. I’m starting to follow all along with him,” Godino explained to Fox 25.

Students complained about Godino’s post on Twitter, so the Revere Superintendent Dianne Kelly stepped in and told Fox 25 that the school district “believes in freedom of speech, but cannot support what she calls insensitive language.”

“If you’re going to stand up and say something that other people will find offensive, then you need to be prepare to deal with the ramifications of that,” the superintendent declared.

As a result of the backlash, the school system has banned Godino from cheering for the rest of the season.

Yep, let's teach our kids that the first amendment is a bad thing.

I personally think schools have No business monitoring kids' facebooks, instagram, twitter, etc.

No. They don't support freedom of speech. This was done on personal time. I would sue.

I agree. I also don't believe in the school punishing kids for things that happen away from school grounds. It just isn't their business.

Insensitive language? I bet the school would have a coronary if they read my view on illegals.

This.  Why is it insensitive if it's true?  Now if she had used a racial slur okay, different.  But an illegal immigrant is just that.  It was her own personal time anyway.  Let's teach kids there's really no such thing as free speech.  She DOES need to sue.

Oh good grief, the PC (no freedom of speech group) strikes again.

Yeah, the school is teaching the kids that they really do not have freedom of speech.

I hope she sues.

It's amazing what is being taught in schools these days.

And she would win.  The school is government run - they just violated her first amendment rights.

Schools can do a lot of things that other businesses could not.  The School Board policies have more weight in some ways as the policy is made and voted on by elected officials.  Not saying it cant' be challenged or is right, but schools are able to do things that other businesses cannot.  Schools can search kids lockers and even search their cars at any time they wish too.  Schools are making social media policies which are being upheld.

She made a political statement on her own account on her own time - they have absolutely no right to do that.  And comparing it to a business doesn't work - a business could fire her b/c it is NOT the government - the government does not have the right to stifle speech under the first amendment.

BTW people - THIS is the slippery slope people are talking about.

I agree. But, that doesnt' mean that what I think always happens. Schools get away with those things for the most part, even when challenged.

But this is FAR different from a locker search. Lockers are actually school property ON school property.

Hey, I am just telling you. We have social media policies. Every school does. And, part of that includes being able to suspend or expel someone who is bullying or using social media those kinds of ways. We have consulted School Law attorneys and all the schools have these policies in place. I personally don't believe it is the job of the School to monitor students' Facebook accts or whatever, but I am only one person.

This is another I said what I did about schools and mass brain washing and how basic rights will be stripped.

There won't be a war or massive visible taking of rights.

It's going to be a slow removal.

Yes it is.  And she didn't insult or bully anyone.  Saying that 90% of the town is illegal immigrants is a statement.  It can be proven or disproven.

Well, even if it is proven wrong, that still isn't their business. Who cares? It's not a test and people are entitled to believe wrong information.

It's completely unreasonable that this student was held accountable by the school for exercising her Constitutionally protected right of free speech off of school grounds. We, as a country, need to stop the insanity.

Illegal isn't a race. The school should be ashamed for insinuating that!

Nope!  I was a white illegal in California for a year before I came back from Canada.

She needs to go back to English class. Her grammar makes my head hurt.

Since she was responding to a Tweet from her teacher specifically regarding the low voter turn out I think the school was way out of line.
