We went to a small town bar in Nebraska for karaoke. As with almost all small towns in Nebraska, to say it is not racially diverse is a whopping understatement. It's a lily white community.
We weren't there very long before in walks an attractive black woman. Not only was that unusual, but she was dressed in a leopard print mini dress and wearing 5 inch heels.
She was there to have a good time, though--and she did. turns out she was alone so we invited her to sit with us, but by the end of the night everyone in the bar knew who she was.

Would you have invited a black dude in a hoodie to sit with you?

If he were alone, I probably would have. Not sure what that has to do with anything, though.

WHY would you ask this and why WOULD you care??
he is just sharing something that happened to him this weekend, not asking for opinions, and actually this is not even an opinion in my books, it is just a rude poke for no reason

I think it has more to do with how confident and outgoing she was in an area not exactly teeming with people that look like her. In today's day and age, with everything divided by race, it's nice to know that the only black person for miles around is welcomed and makes friends rather than the alternative. It's a breath of fresh air in our race obsessed society.

The way she was dressed, the way she acted--NOTHING like her is ever found in small towns.
I've met people similar to her before--in San Diego, Las Vegas, Miami Beach--not podunkville Nebraska.

I have to admit, based on the thread title, I was expecting you to reveal that it was "one of the guys that used to have keys to the Minutemen Missiles" or "someone that stunt doubled for some famous person", something like that.

So confident outgoing classy black women are like unicorns. Got it.
The only thing "race obsessed" that I can see is this thread. If she was white this would have been a non issue. There are plenty of women just like her. The fact that husker has never met any speaks more to his sheltered life than it does to their number.

WTF are you babbling about? Just stop. You sound ignorant.
I've met people similar to her--although no one exactly like her--but in olaces like Vegas, Miami Beach, San Diego, Seattle--where we were that night, she was the only black person in that entire town.
Beyond that, as I said in my original post, she WOULD have stuck out even if she had been white because NOBODY in rural Nebraska dresses like that.
i just thought it made for an interesting night that had she not been there--would have been much less interesting. You want to turn this into something ugly, which it was not and should not be.

I hope the rest of your community is as welcoming to her as you were husker. It's not easy moving to a community that is different. I had some problems initially when I moved from L.A. to West Virginia. More and more "city folk" were moving to this particular city and the locals were not at all happy. One guy even bumped me with his car while I was walking in the grocery store parking lot. Glared right at me while I was walking in to the store while he did it. I can't even imagine what this woman might face being, but it's good to know the people in that bar took the time to get to know her.

A woman who is vivacious, and confident, will do just fine around here. She will make friends all over the place. People will soon be flocking to her side.
Some will probably defend her to the death to protect her from jerks too.
Outsides would be pleasantly surprised by how accepting people are here.

You mentioned she was attractive. You mentioned her leopard-print mini. You mentioned her sky-high heels. No, I guess nobody dresses like that in Nebraska.
That's why I asked if you would have reacted the same way to a guy in a hoodie.
I think for the most part, small town Nebraska is pretty accepting. Sometimes it takes awhile. In some communities, the Mexican population is still a bit segregated, but it's improving.
It depends a bit on the town, too. Some are better than others.

MM and I, and I'd bet a lot of other Geeks, have had lots of friends, who were Black. Or Latino.
People, of color. Not, lily white.
We never thought to point them out to others, the way you do.
speaking of black women and karaoke--was at a hotel/resort deal in the high desert--some corporate nonsense or other--anyway, after the meetings were over for the day went down to the bar and sat down--sort of the wild west/mexico motif--lots of natural stone, saltillo floor, rough-hewn beams and bar and it's karaoke night--sitting a couple of tables over is a thirty-something black woman--nice looking, nicely dressed and after a few minutes she stands and walks over to my table--as i'm rising and pulling out her chair, she says " i heard you speaking earlier this afternoon. you're a bass for sure. i want you to sing with me. "--sort of laughed and told her was more of a drummer/keyboard guy than a singer but would go ahead and give it a try--asked her what she had in mind--" let me be there " by olivia newton-john, she said--holy hell, had not heard that song in years--" are you sure?" i asked--" oh yeah. we're gonna rock it, blue eyes. "--holy hell--by now there are probably 40 or 50 people in the place and am thinking she's either got some pipes or this is going to really suck--anyway here we go--turns out she's got one of those gospel alto voices that is out of this world and we get to the duet parts and she's on pitch and on time--actually went very well--people getting up and cheering/dancing/clapping, etc.--we did " delta dawn " after that and then sat down for a while--told her that was really fun and she had one hell of a voice--she said " honey when you reached way down for those low ones you raised the hair up on my arms. you were awesome. " guess the moral is you can't judge a book by it's cover--would have never thought that a rather petite lady like that could have a set of pipes that could bring the house down--damned good fun

BS. Try reading my posts. I said she was all that and a bag of chips and that everyone knew who she was by the end of the night.
I thi had an interesting time last weekend, partly because of her. People post things on here all the time about things they may find interesting--but you don't call what they post drivel. If you don't like what I post, then don't comment.
I just thought it would be fun to talk about something other than abortion, or terrorism, or politics. Thanks for ruining that. At least most people weren't asses about it.

Neat story. My wife is a really good singer and I, well, sing. We always have a good time at karaoke. Good way to meet people.
One time in downtown Orlando we were in a bar that was not crowded to say the least. A big dude, like 6'6" and 350 lbs., came up and sat with us out of the blue. He looked like a rapper. He talked to us for awhile and then said he was going to sing. I'm thinking "Big Butts" or "Funky Cold Medina"--but he belted out an old Waylon Jennings tune.
Go figure.

Why would you think he was a rapper? Because he was a big guy?! What the heck?! You have serious issues stereotyping people. Wow.

He looked like a rapper, so you would think that is the music he likes. Not that hard to figure out. That is not stereotyping.
If someone walked in wearing cowboy boots, would you assume he likes country music? Yeah, you would.

well, have never liked rap--whatever it is, it isn't music--in my personal opinion, it's garbage--it degrades women, aggrandizes violence ( especially against women and cops ) and is fundamentally racist
in structure, it's purely ridiculous--gibberish in the form of iambic pentameter ( or a variant thereof ) that we learn in 4th grade, a dubstep track ( computer-generated ) and a " melody " that's been " sampled " ( translate, borrowed or stolen ) from another artist
lord, worse than noise and loaded with negative energy

speaking of black women and karaoke--was at a hotel/resort deal in the high desert--some corporate nonsense or other--anyway, after the meetings were over for the day went down to the bar and sat down--sort of the wild west/mexico motif--lots of natural stone, saltillo floor, rough-hewn beams and bar and it's karaoke night--sitting a couple of tables over is a thirty-something black woman--nice looking, nicely dressed and after a few minutes she stands and walks over to my table--as i'm rising and pulling out her chair, she says " i heard you speaking earlier this afternoon. you're a bass for sure. i want you to sing with me.
Wow.
Jesus Christ. You just look for crap to criticize. I wasn't remotely addressing you--yet you felt the perverse urge to weigh in with your irrelevant, snarky bullsh!t--and you aren't even factually correct in what you post. I didn't say I think he was a rapper--try READING--I said I thought he looked like one. Rappers are sure as hell dressed differently than cowboys. You wouldn't expect someone with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat to belt out some tune by fifty cent. You wouldn't expect a black guy to sing Taylor Swift. It's not wrong to comment on things that are unusual--and those events would be.
YOU are the one with issues here.
Oh, and what does size have to do with anything? Eminem is not a big guy, a lot of rappers are not.
I was just describing him. What am I supposed to say about size? He was of, um, a certain size but I can't tell you what it is because someone thinks if you mention size that is stereotyping? IDIOTIC.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
When you assume you know what a person is like based on how that person looks - that is stereotyping. He was wearing a hoodie so you thought he would like rap music? That is about as idiotic an assumption as I have ever heard. Lots of people wear hoodies, including people who don't like rap, so I don't understand what it was about his appearance that made you think he liked rap music.
It is totally ridiculous to think you know what someone will like based on how they are dressed or what they look like. Which your own words confirm. You thought he would like rap based on how he looked, but it turns out you were wrong. Because how a person looks isn't a great way to judge them!

And the only thing you posted about this man was his height and his size. You followed that with "he looked like a rapper". He was X height and X size, he looked like a rapper. Not sure what someone's height and size have to do with their music choices. I am 5'4" I must like oldies?!?! Makes no sense to me.

You are simply ignorant. I didn't even say he was wearing a hoodie. I don't know where you come up with the nonsense you post.

I don't, either. you are the one who seemed to assume his size had something to do with anything. In your moronic world no one can even use size to describe someone lest you be accused of--size discrimination? You have no intelligent point to make. You just sound like a fool.
Burns ns said he was surprised the woman he sang with had such a voice--but you didn't say a word about his post.

well, have never liked rap--whatever it is, it isn't music--in my personal opinion, it's garbage--it degrades women, aggrandizes violence ( especially against women and cops ) and is fundamentally racist
in structure, it's purely ridiculous--gibberish in the form of iambic pentameter ( or a variant thereof ) that we learn in 4th grade, a dubstep track ( computer-generated ) and a " melody " that's been " sampled " ( translate, borrowed or stolen ) from another artist

We agree on something. Hate that sh!t.
I hate it too. It drives me crazy to be in traffic with someone blaring it so loud their car shakes. In fact it actually causes me road rage.

How so? Did he have gold grillz in his mouth and lot of gold chains?
