She has a point. Breastfeeding is natural. Don't want to see it? Don't look.

I'm so tired of these articles. There's two kind of breastfeeding moms. One that doesn't make an event out of nursing, and the other that bares everything and dares people to say something. I have no issue with breastfeeding but if your going to take your graduation picture with your top completely down, breast totally exposed, and the baby hanging off just expect to get some grief.

I have changed my opinion on this. Feed your baby however you want. There is nothing immodest about breastfeeding, so the only reason to use a cover is if you yourself prefer it.

The Virgin Mary. Is she immodest? Attention seeking? There are TONS of pictures of her nursing, and not a single cover to be found.

Of course it's natural, but I don't especially care to see a strange woman's breast. And there are many times when you can't "not look."

I agree with NJN. There are incidental breastfeeders. Women who are simply going about their business and the time arises to feed the baby. And, if they can be more discreet they will but sometimes you are out and need to nurse your baby. Then, there are the Look at Me militant types trying to prove some point.

I really don't get the need to be running all over creation with a new baby in tow in the first place. Yes, you might need to go out, but why expose your baby to a lot of germs so soon? People are disgusting for the most part and the last thing i really want to do is nurse my baby in public.

Why? Is someone holding your head and forcing you to look? That's just a stupid argument but only to be expected.

Its not forcing you to look but it is uncomfortable when they flop it out there.  My dil nurses her baby and she uses a cover.  I used a cover.

I certainly was not about to nurse in a gross public restroom. I usually just went and sat in my car. It was comfortable, a bit private and i could turn on the heat and listen to the radio.

Yep.  And I also was in the "not wanting to go out" camp.  I had my groceries delivered.  Or I waited until DH was home to stay with the babies while I went out.     But I had two that needed feeding.  And I wasn't even breastfeeding.

I also agree with NJN.  If women just went about their business, covered up and fed discreetly, this wouldn't be an issue.  But the militant nursers are using breastfeeding as another way to divide society.

But dang, I wouldn't want to see her clothing bills!

She must ruin a lot of T-shirts, pulling them down at the neck like that.

I've never seen anyone do that, to nurse a baby.confuse

I have zero problem seeing a woman breastfeeding. She could be standing right in front of me and I could still manage to not look. It's as simple as directing my gaze elsewhere - such as her face - since I have no business looking at her breasts anyway.

I will never forget FIL's reaction to seeing me breastfeeding DS when we were still in the hospital. I said it was time to feed DS and FIL promptly shooed everyone (including DH!) out of the room. Our friend G was visiting at the time too but refused to be shooed out. FIL had a fit over G not leaving but took MIL and DH down to the cafeteria for food. They came back and I was still feeding DS. FIL freaked and tried to get MIL to follow him out of the room. MIL told him it's just a boob and to shut up then took a seat. FIL literally ran from the room and stayed gone for awhile. DH, MIL, G, and I all had a good laugh.

I use to pull mine down and never had a problem.  But I generally preferred the tank/t-shirt method.   Nursing tank under a t-shirt.  you lift the t-shirt up and then pop the latch on the tank.  Minimal exposure.

It is hard avoiding it if it is in your face.  I've tried to avoid looking at a guys butt crack in a café but it was real hard since he was sitting in front of my table and there was no where else to sit.  I've nursed in public but used a cover.  It is just common courtesy and it doesn't take to much effort.

And the breast feeding mother has a right to feed her child where ever she chooses and a right not to be subjected too peoples un-approving scowls.

Other people can keep their feelings to themselves.

I'm actually one of those people that stares. Not out of disgust, but because I believe there is nothing more tender and beautiful than a woman nursing her child. That is a bond like no other. Giving nourishment to your child from your very own body. What is more beautiful than that?

Most of the time no one even notices when someone is breastfeeding.

An experienced mom knows how to do it with out drawing undesired attention.

There have been a couple times I wondered what the moms were thinking though.

One was more about wondering how the baby didn't smother.

That was the biggest boob I'd ever seen. Covered most of the baby. Hands and feet sticking out from under it like an anvil on the coyote.

Couldn't help but stare.

Totally agree...

So people are uncomfortable watching a mother feed her child as God intended?  Really?  Just because you have a perverted view of women's breasts, doesn't mean that people should cow-tow to your "feelings"...

No it doesn't.  I was bottle fed, so was my sister.  And my cousins.  Yet, as an adult, I have come to know that nursing is the absolute most natural thing a mother can do for her child.  You have a problem with breasts.  You better not go to a third world country.  You might die of shock, seeing all those uncovered breasts...

I breastfed both my boys & frankly, I didn't want strangers looking at my b00bs.

So because you didn't want strangers looking at your boobs, no one else should feel comfortable doing something as innocent as feeding their child.  Nice...

Really? If I'm in a restaurant and she's at the table in front of us...

If any other poster had made that statement, you would have been fine.

Look at your food, look at your husband. Being offended by something you CHOOSE to look at is silly. No matter WHO makes the statemnt it's just not true.

There is nothing wrong with not wanting strangers looking at YOUR b0oB's. But, you can't make that decision for someone else.

This is not about strangers feelings, it's about a mother's rights.

It's natural. Get over it.

So it makes some women uncomfortable.

They have the right to their feelings.

Their feelings are ridiculous--and ridiculous feelings should be given no credence by society.

Totally agree...

So people are uncomfortable watching a mother feed her child as God intended?  Really?  Just because you have a perverted view of women's breasts, doesn't mean that people should cow-tow to your "feelings"...

 Excuse me?!

I think a lot of it depends on how you were raised. My mother & aunt both bottle fed.

flan

No it doesn't.  I was bottle fed, so was my sister.  And my cousins.  Yet, as an adult, I have come to know that nursing is the absolute most natural thing a mother can do for her child.  You have a problem with breasts.  You better not go to a third world country.  You might die of shock, seeing all those uncovered breasts...

 Thanks ever so much!

People look.  Right or wrong.  That 20 something girl in the mall with shorts that barely cover her arse and a t-shirt that shows everything?  People look.  Guys with anything hanging out.  Yep, people notice.  I think it's really naive to say you shouldn't notice.

 Another person with common sense.

flan

Common sense says avert your eyes not make the whole world stop because it "bothers" you.

It IS a mother's right.

It IS natural & beautiful.

It IS also possible to do it discretely.

Look, I'm not against breastfeeding. I think it's natural and normal. Does anyone remember that girl who was graduating (can't remember if it was high school or college) and she unzipped her graduation robe all the way down. All she had underneath was a pair of panties. Both boobs hanging out. She let the baby latch on and then walked around taking selies of herself. She got flak when she posted all the half naked pictures on FB. People came out in droves, just like in this thread, to either defend or vilify her.

I think what Lindley said is so true. 99% of all women breastfeed and do it without others noticing. But that one militant that has to whip everything out and around just to make a point is what divides people.

Oh, and btw, the newest thing is for the "stars" to take pictures of themselves breastfeeding to show what good moms they are. Why? Why do you have to prove it to the public?

Well it was the mother that seemed to make this an issue. If she did not like the woman staring she could have ignored her.
