A Muslim U.S. citizen and his wife burst into his office holiday party with assault rifles and tactical clothing, massacred 14 and injured 17 before they were both shot dead in a dramatic police shootout in suburban San Bernardino.
Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, who is U.S.-born, was at the party for local health officials but reportedly left angry before returning heavily armed with his wife Tashfeen Malik, 27, and opening fire at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino on Wednesday morning.
Farook, an environmental specialist with the county health department, has been described as a 'devout' Muslim and is said to have traveled to Saudi Arabia earlier this year and returned with a wife.
Co-worker Patrick Baccari says Farook was gone for about a month in the spring. When he returned, word got around Farook had been married, and the woman he described as a pharmacist joined him shortly afterward. A baby followed.

Syed Farook's brother-in-law Farhan Khan (pictured) spoke at a press conference held at the offices of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Anaheim to say he was stunned to hear of his relative's involvement in the shooting
Baccari says the reserved Farook showed no signs of unusual behavior, although he grew out his beard several months ago.
He said he had been sitting at the same table as Farook at the party on Wednesday morning, but his co-worker suddenly disappeared, leaving his coat behind on his chair.
Baccari said he had stepped into the bathroom when the shooting started and suffered minor wounds from shrapnel slicing through the wall.
San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan confirmed that Farook had attended the party, but left 'angry' before returning heavily armed with Malik.
He said said a motive for the shooting is not yet known, but said that there did seem to be 'some degree of planning involved' in the attack.
REVEALED: ARMORY OF HUSBAND-AND-WIFE KILLER DUO WHO USED 'MILITARY TACTICS' IN POLICE SHOOTOUT
Police revealed late Wednesday that Farook and Malik were armed with two assault rifles and two automatic handguns in their battle to the death with the cops.
Officials told the LA Times that a .223-caliber DPMS Model A15 rifle and a Smith and Wesson M&P15 rifle were both recovered from the scene. They also found a handgun made by Llama and a Smith and Wesson handgun.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said they traced the guns and found that two of them were bought legally, though it did not specify which guns and who purchased them.
It came as a police source speaking to Fox News said the killer duo used 'military tactics' to confront police. They reportedly had body-mounted cameras, which would have allowed them to record the massacre.

Federal officials have not ruled out terrorism as a motive, but authorities are confident the pair are the suspects involved in the mass shooting. Burguan added Farook and Malik were in a relationship, but did not confirm if they were married or engaged.
The Los Angeles Times reported Farook had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia, where he married a woman he had met online. Colleagues told the Times that Farook was a devout Muslim, but rarely discussed religion at work.
Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), says the couple left their baby with its grandmother Wednesday morning and never returned.
Police said a third person was detained, but it is not known if they are connected to the incident.
Farook's brother-in-law Farhan Khan spoke at a press conference held at the offices of the CAIR in Anaheim to say he was stunned to hear of his relative's involvement in the shooting.
Khan, who is married to Farook's sister, said he last spoke to the 28-year-old about a week ago. He said he had 'absolutely no idea why he would do this. I am shocked myself.'
'I just cannot express how sad I am for what happened today,' Khan said. 'I am very sad that people lost their lives. I am shock that something like this could happen.'
Khan says other family members asked him to speak at the news conference, and to express their sadness over the shootings.
Intelligence officials are hunting for a link to terror groups including ISIS as Farook and his wife were named as the couple who stormed a conference center in San Bernardino.
The FBI are considering domestic terrorism as a possible motive, as well as workplace violence, which led shooters to kill 14 people in the deadliest mass shooting since the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012.
David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI's field office in Los Angeles, says one possible motive is workplace violence and another is 'terrorism.'
Burguan added the suspects were dressed in 'assault-style' clothing and carrying assault rifles and handguns. He said a third person was seeing running from the scene, who has now been detained. He added that it is not known if the person is connected to the shooting.
He said the shootout occurred after police followed leads to an apartment in Redlands, California, and a vehicle was seen leaving the property. Police stopped the SUV they were riding in, which led to a pursuit and shootout.
A police officer, who was the first to engage with the suspects, was hurt in the gun battle and is in hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Armed police and armored vehicles were captured on live television surrounding a black SUV on San Bernardino Avenue - a mile and a half from the Inland Regional Center where the mass shooting occurred this morning.
The SUV was captured on broadcast helicopters with its windows apparently completely shot out and a smashed windscreen.
A source told CNN that the suspects threw pipe bombs out of the windows of the vehicle before the shootout with police. Authorities said the vehicle has now been cleared of any explosive devices.
Meredith Davis, a spokeswoman with ATF, told KCAL9-TV that the suspects threw a thick-gauge copper pipe out of the SUV, but no explosives were found inside. The fake pipe bomb was equipped with a piece of material made to look like a wick.
And terrifying cell phone footage taken by a passer-by captured the moment cops engaged in a shootout with people inside a black SUV.
In a shocking video obtained by Fox News' Kelly File, shots can be heard ringing out as a convoy of police cars tail the vehicle down a road not far from the mass shooting earlier on Wednesday.
At one point a bright flash can be seen coming from inside the vehicle, from which pipe bombs were reportedly thrown during the chase through the suburbs of San Bernardino.
Meanwhile, police are serving a search warrant on a home in Redlands, California, in connection with the deadly shooting at a social services facility in neighboring San Bernardino.
Around six vehicles carrying helmeted police drove into the area, AP reported. One officer carrying an assault rifle ordered reporters to clear the area, and an armored vehicle parked outside a row of homes.
Earlier today, authorities branded the mass shooting a case of domestic terrorism, adding the shooters, who came prepared with long guns, 'were on a mission' and 'came with a purpose' to the center, where a holiday party for government employees was taking place.
Governor Jerry Brown said the shooting is a brutal attack, adding: 'California will spare no effort in bringing these killers to justice.' The governor was scheduled to light the Capitol Christmas tree on Wednesday evening, but his office said the ceremony will be canceled.
Meanwhile, audio from a police scanner revealed how the shooting unfolded this morning - with an officer heard saying 'be advised, one suspect fled in a black SUV, we do not know if we still have an active shooter... we have two down inside.'
The New York Times reported that those who fled were brought to a golf course on the south of the building, but were then moved from the scene due to a 'potential explosive device.'
Officers had been scouring the area for up to three white males dressed in tactical gear and ski masks, who are believed to have carried out the morning attacks.
The suspects fled in a black SUV after leaving behind a suspicious device, police said. Burguan added that it is too early to say whether the attackers targeted that area or chose it out of convenience or at random.
At a press conference held at 2pm, Burguan said authorities have no identification on the suspects and do not know the motive behind the bloodshed.
'The information we have is that they came prepared to do what they did as if they were on a mission,' Burguan said. 'At minimum, we have a domestic terrorist-type situation here. They came prepared to do what they did, as if they were on a mission.'
David Bowdich, who directs the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, said authorities do not know if the shooting is a 'terrorist incident.'
The Los Angeles Times reported how one victim hid under a desk when she was shot once in the lower back.
Denise Peraza, 27, told relatives that two armed men, dressed in black, wearing black masks entered and started shooting at random.
'Everyone dropped to the floor. It was during a holiday party,' Peraza said. 'The guys opened fired for 30 seconds, randomly, then paused to reload and began firing again.'
She said after the shooting, everything was silent for around five minutes until police entered and she was taken out of the building.
The San Bernardino Fire Department tweeted at around 11am local time that first responders were on the scene in 1300 block of South Waterman Avenue. The shooting occurred at the Inland Regional Center, a non-profit organization for people with disabilities.
The 44-year-old organization has 670 employees and works with more than 30,000 people in San Bernardino and Riverside to help normalize their lives, according to the center's Facebook page.
Marybeth Feild, the president and CEO of the Inland Regional Center, said the shooting happened in the conference area of a building that houses at least 25 employees as well as a library.
She says the shooting happened in a conference area where the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health was having a banquet.
According to Feild, an outside group was renting the conference center today. Brandon Hunt, an IRC employee, told CNN that a Christmas party for county workers was being held at the center when gunfire erupted.
Glenn Willwerth, who heard shots being fired, told Fox News that he saw a black SUV leaving the scene that was 'driving slowly and deliberately'. He said he saw people running frantically out of the building and hiding behind cars
A day before the shooting, the San Bernardino center hosted a children's Christmas party.
While most of the center's youngest patients only come in for appointments, some of the most disabled are permanent residents.
A video posted on Twitter showed wheelchair-bound children beaming as they danced to the song Celebrate in one of the center's halls - and pictures posted to the center's official Facebook page show children receiving presents from Santa Claus.
SWAT teams have been called in to clear the scene, according to Los Angeles News reporter Doug Sanders.
A bomb squad used a robot to detonate an apparent explosive device left at the scene, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing anonymous sources. FBI and ATF agents are on the scene.
Shortly before noon, dozens of people were seen existing the building with their hands up. Others were seen being taken away by paramedics on gurneys.
Loma Linda University Medical has received four patients in its trauma center and officials there were expecting three more. Hospital spokeswoman Briana Pastorino said she didn't know the patients' condition
Work related violence people! Nothing to see here! Incidental Muslims. Maybe he went to Sunday School once when he was 3 so it's probably Christianity's fault!
As for Obama saying there is "no parrallel like this anywhere else in the world". Um it just happened last week in Paris Dum Dum. I know you hate America and always are looking for confirmation of why you hate America, but stop being a freaking liar.
Yes even more were killed in Paris but this doesn't happen in other countries. Wake up people, gun laws will not stop the crazies from getting guns. It will only make us easier targets.

My hope is that we're able to contain this particular shooting, and we don't yet know what the motives of the shooters are, but what we do know is that there are steps we can take to make Americans safer, and that we should come together in a bipartisan basis at every level of government to make these rare as opposed to normal,' he said. 'We have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world, and there are some steps we could take, not to eliminate every one of these mass-shootings, but to improve the odds that they don't happen as frequently – common-sense gun safety laws, stronger background checks,' Obama added. One such measure, he said, would consist of ensuring suspected terrorists on the nation's 'no fly list' fail federally mandated background checks when they try to purchase firearms from licensed dealers.
'For those who are concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a 'no fly list' where people can't get on planes,' Obama explained. 'But those same people who we don't allow to fly could go into a store right now in the United States and buy a firearm, and there's nothing that we can do to stop them. That's a law that needs to be changed.'

Were these guns registered to the shooter? My guess is no, they were bought off the black-market. Gun laws cannot prevent this from continuing. How do I know? Because we already have gun laws. And really, how many mass murderers are law-abiding citizens?
How about watching people who fly to Saudi Arabia to bring back wives, start receiving a lot of packages, and work in their garages all night. We all must be vigilant, and yes, profile.

Nope. He did not.

Rampage reportedly sparked after gunman had an argument at a holiday party at the Inland Regional Center

I'll do more checking. There is, unfortunately, lots of confusing things reported after a shooting like this.
And why use the word "co-worker?" Were they using the space for their event?
flan
I think that is correct. It was a Christmas party. But he knew some of them and some he didn't. He works for the state, and doesn't really have an office. He was a health inspector, so a lot of his coworkers really weren't coworkers, KWIM?

Thanks. I was just going on what LGS posted (so I blame her!!!)
Want to see my shocked face? This is Islamic terrorism. Obama won't even be able to spit out those words.
gun control won't do **** to stop that--unless they are willing to take all guns from Muslims--but try suggesting that And see what happens.
-- Edited by huskerbb on Thursday 3rd of December 2015 09:06:18 AM
And the guns were legally purchased.
flan
Yeah--my point, exactLY. Are you willing to say all Muslims cannot purchase/own guns?
I somehow doubt they were legally purchased. The guns he used are illegal in California:
Semi-automatic firearms that the state has classified as assault weapons, .50 BMG caliber rifles, and magazines that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition may not be sold in California. Possession of automatic firearms, and of short-barreled shotguns and rifles, is generally prohibited.

OK, did a little more research. The guns were purchased legally, but not by the shooter. So the shooter did not legally own the guns. In CA, paperwork has to be submitted even in a private sale. So he had possession of guns that were not his and are illegal in his state...

I don't remember a terrorist attack in which any of the guns were legal.
So all the gun control in the world is not going to stop criminals from having guns.
It just makes more targets.

Obama has already said that it might be a terrorist attack or workplace violence.

It's not just workplace violence. Some guy who goes off his rocker at his workplace doesn't have this type of planning and sophistication and doesn't involve his wife.

So apparently they are bringing out the past of the guy. Don'tcha know, he was abused by his dad.
Yeah. He's a victim.
The shooters had a 6 month old baby girl.
Wonder where she is.
